I am an English teacher at a private school who only recently moved here. I am a Mongolian, but I'm not as fluent in Mongolian as I am in English. When I moved, I expected that generative AI would be more normalized here, as I knew a little bit about the cultural difference around AI in Asia. I was genuinely prepared and didn't let the suggestions from my peers to use AI bother me. However, I am coming to a point where I genuinely can not handle the hypocrisy and frankly, moronic double-think of these people anymore. They will complain about power outages one second and then recommend you to use AI the next. They will complain about the dust and air quality and then use AI. They will complain about the poor data connections and then fucking use AI. I am just so tired and I feel like there is a big rock in my stomach everytime I have keep my mouth shut and not yell at my coworkers. I hate all of them. I am not liking the work culture here so far and I think about quitting every day partly because of this. The pay isn't even good. I know there's nothing I can personally do about this (yet) but I just want to hear from some like-minded people here (hopefully) because I'm finding I'm surrounded only by people I genuinely can not respect due to their complete lack of values or sense. Sorry to be a bit of a downer because I don't have a solution myself, I mean I literally just got here. Though if you guys have any ideas, I'd love to hear them, too.

Mom said I can do makeup but wont help me about it, my new school said no makeup to the girls that are almost graduating, but nothing to us so I might in the clear. I have my own allowance that I can buy things with, I'm js not sure whether I should buy stuff according to Google and Youtube, or stay bare faced and lazy-looking this year (again)

Most of international/social media coverage relates directly towards Ulaanbaatar and its issues, however due to such coverage, the problems and issues plaguing local aimags and soums are often overlooked in favour of UB and its issues.

That isn't to say that UB isn't the premier city for Mongolia for its economic, social and political impact. With its population of 1.75 million for a country with 3.59 million people, it holds a share of 49% of the population living in the city. Along with the fact that city holds political centre, its manufacturing and economic centre, along with the road and train routes being connected to it.

But this concentration of issues still causes the other 51% of the population to have their voices and importance be overshadowed by the issues plaguing the capital city and government resources be directed and dictated by city politicians who don't live or deal with the local communities with the aimgas and soums.

That's why, I wanted to hear some opinions after I had done some critical thinking and would broaden my horizons on other people who might've had similar ideas to it.

Currently, as I had understand it. Ulsiin Ih Hural(Улсын Их Хурал, UIH) votes the candidate nominated by the president to make the Prime Minister. Then a local council(irgediin toloolgchiin hural) proposes candidates for the Prime Minister and the Prime minister himself approves/disapproves the candidates and becomes the governer (Засаг Дарга).

Now, after doing some digging and also thinking about Mongolian political culture. It's well established that a lot of the local council is largely organized and or operated by political parties(Нам) with a recent 2026 law that proposes that at least 30% of the local councils must be made up of career government managers/functionaries(төрийн захиргааны албан хаагч).

So the concentration of power and control throughout our vast land rests entirely within the political parties and UIH with individual contributions being highly variable. Now this itself isn't inherently a problem and has its benefits and drawbacks.

However, after going through and reading these. I had found out that Mongolia's regional fiscal policy was largely dictated by the Ministry of Finance and through inter-party relations. Meaning that the taxes and social welfare is largely dictated not at the regional level but significantly much more at the top.

Reading through this, i believe that this system is largely a byproduct of Mongolia's communist era political structure that simply wasn't removed during and after the revolution and I believe this is also a reason that its causing a significant choking as well as potential for exploitation and corruption for the country especially at the regional level outside of Ulaanbaatar.

There is a significant and important benefit from this as local soums and aimagiin tuvs have budgets that they can allocate for doctors or have state sponsored hospitals that allow Mongolians to not be dying of preventable diseases and etc. But this also means that aimgiin tuvs and soums don't have control over their own budgets and soums as they send their money entirely up.

simplified, soums/aimags send their taxes upto the national budget with nothing to spare for regional projects or development ideas, and national budget dictates where those taxes goes directly along with significant room for corruption, embezzlement and too much pressure for the Ministry of Finance to handle them.

So, I thought of this. A political and fiscal breaking of the UIH's chokehold over regional Mongolia and allow for regional politics and ideas to flourish to dictate their own regional controls. And this time, not a rapid change but a gradual change of them so that the regional governers can slowly get a grasp on how to deal with taxes, budgets and more with 50% of the taxes that these regional workers industries pay.

Now, these is the obvious issue of this. Most aimags aren't profitiable, most aimags have very little industries that generate money and generate taxes for them to use. The ones that do, only do so because they haves mines or tourists. Now, this is where I believe that Mongolia can significantly stand to benefit and create a serious change.

We cut government spending on a lot of these welfares and funnel them into infrastructure/industry projects for these aimags to have tax/industry base for them to be self sufficient. I believe that Mongolia is a vast enough land of resources and we can stand to benefit significantly from decentralizing and giving autonomy to allow for rapid regional development instead of all of us dying in the air pollution created by Ulaanbaatar.

Hi everyone, I’m currently in Ulaanbaatar and my Revolut card got swallowed by an ATM last night.

I’m leaving for the countryside later today and I’m a bit worried because I’ll probably need cash for fuel, ger camps, small shops, etc.

Does anyone know if there’s any way in Mongolia to withdraw cash without a physical card? Like a cardless ATM, Apple Pay, sending money somewhere and collecting cash, or some local service where I can transfer money from Revolut and receive MNT cash.

I still have a couple of backup cards, but they don’t work here for withdrawal.

Also, for people who travel around rural Mongolia, do most petrol or diesel stations accept Visa/Mastercard or contactless payments, or should I assume I need cash?

I’m heading toward Kharkhorin, Orkhon Valley/Waterfall and Ugii Lake, so any recent experience would really help.
