Which two Moog modules to learn modular synthesis and create tracks on?

As a beginner to modular synthesis, out of the Mother-32, DFAM, Subharmonicon, Labyrinth, and Spectravox, which two are best for learning modular on and creating tracks asap? I currently have a Behringer Model D. I'm leaning towards the Mother and DFAM but I'd like some opinions, thanks!

Mother and DFAM.

This is the best option IMO

I got into them late and probably wouldn't get a mother over my vermona mono lancet but if you're just starting out it's an excellent monosynth. And honestly you can never have too many monosynths imo.

This is the way

I would say DFAM is a strong choice regardless which other semi modular you choose, which will probably depend in large part on what type of workflow you prefer. If you want to make full tracks in a single performance vs. layering stuff in a DAW that changes things quite a bit.

The Mother 32 may overlap a lot with your Behringer Model D, depending how you patch it and use it. The feature set is solid, and it sounds good, but it’s probably the least distinctive offering compared to what else is out there (there are tons of monosynths to choose from).

If you’re looking to learn about modular I would probably not choose Spectravox? Kind of a niche feature set compared to all the others in my opinion.

For me I would choose DFAM + either Subharmonicon or Labyrinth. I enjoy Subharmonicon, it’s the only one of the bunch that can really do chords, definitely works for bass lines, but it’s maybe not the most versatile. I have never played around with Labyrinth, but it seems pretty cool - I like synths that can be patched to do rhythmic beat type stuff (pseudo-drums, non-tuned percussion) and I’m pretty sure Labyrinth gives you that versatility.

DFAM can make really cool melodic/pitched percussion sounds (think marimba-esque) so having a second option for percussion type parts would maybe let you use the DFAM in multiple ways - if DFAM is your only percussion it’s gonna end up kind of relegated to that role despite being able to do much more.

So there’s my recommendation and logic - DFAM + Labyrinth gets you the most versatility in patching assuming you’re going to use the Behringer Model D as the main melodic voice (which is what I would do - I could have plenty of fun on that setup plus a couple FX pedals).

I'd say any 2 of the mother, dfam, or labyrinth, though the labyrinth is not as straight forward. The subharmonicon is great but idk if it's great for learning because there is nothing else like it. Imo, easier to approach once you've already learned a bit.

Personnally I think the Mother has to be one of the two. Hence the name and the Mother ecosystem. Especially since you want to learn modular synthesis. It's so much easier when you start with a centerpiece and that's exactly it's role.

Mother 32 and DFAM are the best pals of all, IMO, when the goal is to create a duo.

The subharmonicon is a very cool and capable machine but the fact that it's so feature packed might be somewhat overwhelming for someone who's just getting started.

The labyrinth and the spectravox are more "niche" and won't help you learning the basics of modular synthesis, IMO.

Dfam and the mother is my first pick.

Mothee 32 and subharmonicon comes second with a long term vision, when you grasp the whole modular synthesis principles, it could be a fun playground for you to thrive in.

Have you considered a Grandmother? That’s such a great learning platform imo.

The Grandmother has the cool spring reverb.

I think I'm about to graduate to the Matriarch. Grandmother is a blast though!

I’ve had both for a long time and they’re both really fun, but the filter on the GM is a lot more comprehensible than the matriarch

What do you mean “more comprehensible”?

The filter on the matriarch is less intuitive in my opinion. Certainly less so than the GM filter.

Can't wait to find out for myself :)

Labyrinth and subharmonium…I feel the generative and percussive nature of the labyrinth pairs well with the more complex melodic sounds of the sub.

Subharmonicon is my favorite but DFAM is easiest to learn on. Subharmonicon has all the music theory baked in.
