Someone got drunk and thought my bike was the spot to hang out.
I'm military and had to ship out for a few weeks. I get on the WiFi last night and see my bike is being moved via my tracker app. I had left it on base thinking that nobody would screw with it seeing as we're all in the same situation and such.
I ask someone to go check on it, they don't make it until the next day. And these are the pics they send. Mind you, this thing was spotless when I left.
I'm still not back and am just hoping the dude was wearing some shitty pants or something vs he dropped it.
Sorry for venting but I'm pissed.

Gotta get yourself a cover if you’re leaving your bike for weeks at a time

I typically have one, but the last time I left one of the clips that hold it on the bike snapped. I guess it was really windy or whatever while I was away

bungie straps over it so it doesnt get caught in the wind.

I live in the PNW now, and my bike lives in a barn on a buddy’s property. But before this, I lived in the cornfields outside Chicago, and it does get quite windy there, which leads to fairly regular occurrences of finding your bike laying down after storms pass.
From my personal experience, the cover makes your bike (2014 Suzuki DR-650) a bit of a sail for the wind to latch onto and tips it over, in high winds that might otherwise find the ability to pass through the ventilation gaps in the frame for the air cooled motor.
If you have access to a permanent spot outside, I found it’s worth laying down some cinder blocks in a formation of at least two side by side, for both sides, cutting small holes in cover for ties to pass through, and then lashing the stem to the outer block on either side. This is what ultimately prevented mine from tipping over with 70+ MPH winds, while wearing her raincoat. ☔️
Edit: re-reading your reply, I realized that this may be similar to what you were referring to, but my initial read was that you were saying to strap the cover to the bike to prevent it flying away. Sorry if I restated your point. 😅

I first bought this cover back in 2012 and didn't have to replace it until it finally hit the of life about ten years later. I bought another one and I still use it. It has never once flown off the bike or ripped in the wind. In the heaviest of storms it's come up the bike part way, but it mostly just holds tight. It also has never kited the bike to flip over, but ymmv if it's lighter in weight.

It's amazing to have little inflation awareness moments like this. A cover is $100‽

I'm old, the last cover I bought was in 2002 or something.
Now I'm down to a scooter with underground parking

You're not old. Old age is 10 years older than you. I'm 72 so old age for me is 82.

u/FantasticAd5239 3h ago
I think Johnny Carson said one time that old age is actually 15 years older than you. I'm 74 so old age to me is roughly 89. I'll go with that. But to be honest I wake up a lot of days feeling pretty darn decrepit. And it takes a couple hours to be feeling my usual ancient self, lol.

What you riding? My mom's mid 70s and still occasionally on her rebel250

I go away for two to three months so I use two covers locked on. Bungee cords and finally strong string/rope tieing eveything down. Might seem over the top but I've never had a problem in the six years I've been doing it.

u/ClassicVW2 2h ago
If it’s a windy area, a cover out in the open can be a problem. It acts as a solid sail, and takes the full force of the wind, knocking the bike over. If you’re covering a bike outdoors, it needs to be parked just about up against a wall and not out in the open.

Sad. Those are such nice looking panniers

The were definitely an investment, I tried to keep them in good condition too.

That shit would piss me off too. I’d definitely be looking into who that was myself. But damn dude.. I could never leave my bike somewhere outside that long without at LEAST a cover on it. I don’t even see a lock 😬.. The tracker is cool and all but doesn’t do you much good when you can’t even get there to go find the bike lol

My wife is on base almost everyday so I didn't see a big issue with it. I said in a different reply to that my cover got damaged the last time I left(2 months out to sea). I guess it got under some bad weather and one of the 2 clips snapped off

If your wife is on base almost everyday, why didn't you keep it in housing? Why is it parked at the Barracks? Hell, anyone on post in housing could've kept it in their garage if you're cool with them. If you're getting BAH, and leaving your bike at the barracks while you're gone, and your wife is on base almost everyday, what the hell are you even doing?

not victim blaming but that is a bad take. It is exposed to all sorts of things, not just drunk idiots...weather, sun, etc. Get a better cover, lash it down properly, and/or find a covered place to park the bike. Investing in an audible, on-bike alarm as well might be wise. If you don't see anything wrong with your bike being exposed to the elements, uncovered 24/7 that's on you.

bro you'd think but privates will fuck with anything. they stole the back seat out of my truck at the Barracks. tried to hotwire it later, and stole the turbo/ECU from it even later. when I bought a new truck they stole the windshield wipers. they decided to use my rommate's car to smoke, left the lights on and killed his battery.
you can file a report with MP's and they might increase presence in that lot, but they will not investigate without cameras. or other evidence.

It's in the pier, parking area. I'm sure there are some cameras that would at least see the dude walking around with 2 Modelo boxes. I get back tomorrow so I'm not worried about it too much. If my wife doesn't get around to making a report I will.

Bro they're not digging into national archives meant to identify bodies to figure out who drank a couple beers on bros motorcycle. 😂
It was probably Jodi just taking your life for a ride.

u/SunnySanDiegoGuy 13h ago
I'm definitely not your bro.
You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. DNA is not and never was stored at the national archives. It is stored at AFRSSIR as a physical sample. Those physical samples are used for many purposes one of them being identifying missing or fallen service members.
Since 1992 the AFDIL has maintained a database of all US Military and DOD personnel DNA. This is acceptable for criminal investigations by Military law enforcement and the DOD IG. Outside law enforcement requires a federal warrant.

u/No_Durian_3444 13h ago
So they keep it...in a national archive?
All for for a misdemeanor, bud?
-1
u/SunnySanDiegoGuy 13h ago
You are obviously not Military or any type of Law enforcement or law student.
The national archives are for federal Military service records.
Go argue with someone else. You are trying to take this post off topic.
The OP has a damaged motorcycle on a Military base.

I would be fucking pissed off too, especially considering it's an Elvis Edition! I'm hoping it will wash up like new. 😎 What the fuck is wrong with people? No respect! By the way... Thank you for your service! The men and woman of the military are very much appreciated in my book!

I had that happen at a party when I was in my 20s. Some drunk chick wanted a picture on my bike, apparently. She knocked it over and broke the mirror off and scratched the side up. I was pissed.

I suppose it's only obvious to the owner because I've been looking at this photo for a minute now and other than a sweet looking ride I see nothing out of the ordinary or indicative of a drunk hanging out by it 🤷♂️

The empty boxes of beer on the ground next to the front wheel might be what you missed.
•
u/DiabolicalMolecule 17m ago
Ah, now I see there are multiple photos, because the first one the box is practically invisible. That would make a typical CAPTCHA though 🤣

u/GoodHands_All-State 1h ago
"Spotless" may indicate free of damage, so I would hazard a guess and say the saddlebags in each side experienced a drop while the drunk person saddled around with a bike they felt they could use as a cart.

The Monimoto goes off when it's moved, but not when it's "touched", right?
