Considering condo in Robbinsdale, MN, near Twin Lake, should I be concerned about crime?

My husband and I are looking into relocating to MN from NJ, we are looking for tips and recommendations on what to look for, for reference he works in HVAC and makes about $75k a year before taxes, I bring in around $39k. I have a degree in criminal justice and worked everything from law enforcement to animal welfare so I’ll be looking for something similar.

He wants to stay closer to his family that lives in Oklahoma, and also it would be easier drop off for our stepson to see his mom in the summer than flying from NJ.

We don’t mind the cold, we are pretty open minded and love other cultures and from everything we have gathered it looks like MN would have that.

We pay$3k for rent for a 3bd and 2bath right now, so that would be our budget, and then we will be looking to buy a house there.

Any tips or recommendations on where to look? Is Minneapolis better than St Paul? Is there anything in between? We prefer the rural areas but don’t mind city living.

My wife and I are big board gamers, and are looking for the best places in the NW Metro, (we live in the Andover area now,) to meet other gamers, or even just the best FLGS to support local instead of Bezos.

We play a variety of games, and I also run a pretty wide variety of RPGs, (mostly focus on the Year Zero Engine games, Polymorph system games, and Dungeon Crawl Classics.)

I will be making a pilgrimage to Tower Games at some point, but want to find the best ones near me.

I have seen that "Dreamers Vault" and "Nerdinout" appear to be local chains -- was also curious how people feel about those.

My wife and I are moving to Minnesota in about 6 months and are still deciding where we want to end up. Right now we’re looking for areas that are notably queer friendly, as we’re pretty visibly gay and want to feel safe and included in whatever community we immerse ourselves in. We’re both from small town Midwest and would love area with more of the small town vibe, but also understand the more rural we go the more conservative areas can become. Anything up to two hours outside of the twin cities is on our radar! Open to all suggestions! Thank you!

After taking a trip here last October, we weren’t sure if we could make it work but decided to take the plunge. (I had posted earlier under my original account.) we left Ohio to come to the Twin Cities.

Early this month we made the move and ended up in Andover.

I ended up going with an apartment right across the street from Bde Mka Ska, with the Greenway right behind the building, and I couldn't be happier. I'm still a bit apprehensive about how it will be during the winter. It's not super close to stuff, but the distances are very walkable during the nice season. Whole foods is a 10-minute walk away. My favorite Uptown restaurant is a 15-minute walk in the other direction. It's a far cry from the urban density of the North Loop, but I really can't complain either. Thanks again for all the advice!

New Minn. resident/homeowner in Lyndale seeks a new tax person. Would anyone care to recommend theirs?

I recently moved to the twin cities and staying in a fairly old building. I knew it was old, and I specifically asked about pests before moving in. They said there’s no pest concerns, especially on the top floor where my unit is. The night I moved in (not even a week ago), I found TWO roaches in the kitchen. I found two more the following day. and at least 1 a day since. I moved 5 days ago. I emailed them 2 days ago and they sent an unprofessional email with hella typos, talking about they are going to get someone out the next day to look and an exterminator. they also said the leasing agent didn’t know and someone who cooked with a lot of grease used to live in the building brought them in.

It’s going on day 2 after I sent my initial email, and they didn’t bring anyone in like they said. I’m familiar with the renter’s rights here, but I’m open to any advice! Once the fall semester starts, I’m going to go to student legal services if it’s not resolved. Lmk if you have any ideas on what else to do.

Preface: I am truly mentally spent and my living situation is affecting my mental health. If you have nothing productive to say and want to be snarky, I beg you to please move on from this post. I really don’t need it right now. I had to take what I could get after a long job search so here we are.

I am looking for affordable apartment options downtown. I moved out here for work and what the pay me just doesn’t equate to any dignified living out here. My lease is up soon. I thought I could tough it through my raggedy apartment for another year. But along with the never ending drain flies and no AC, I have kept seeing mice the past two months.

I currently pay about $1,200 for everything included to give an idea. I know you get what you pay for, but it was really all I could comfortably afford. This is wishful thinking, but is there anyone that has lived in any of the cheaper downtown options that doesn’t absolutely suck. I’ll put up with a lot but I can’t do pests again. Any dos and donts within downtown would be helpful truly. I don’t want to leave one hell hole to end up right in another. Any suggestions of apartments that may seem out of a lower budget but runs good deals that makes it affordable or ones that have some utilities included? I’m at a point where I will try to go out of budget to get back some peace of mind.

I don’t have a car and walk to work. I know the bus is an option and living further could have cheaper options, but i don’t think I can afford both an increased rent and new daily commute costs. It’s unbelievable working for a billion dollar company and I can’t even afford an apartment without rodents😞

Hey there! I (35tF) got relocated to the plymouth area for work. I'm currently commuting from Minneapolis, but the Uber prices are killing me. I'm told I'll only be in the area 6-7 months, but who knows? I'm looking for a room or studio in the area max like $900-$1000 a month. I work 50-60 hours a week and don't cause a fuss. I eat at work so I won't use a kitchen. Ideally, I just need a place where I can put a bed and sleep. I'll find a storage unit for the rest of my stuff. I'll probably just have a suitcase or two of my clothes.

It's a shitty life, but I make the best jokes. Any guidance would really help.

I enjoy places with walkable restaurants, activities, parks near by and something for kids too. I am millennial and single, so it would be good to be in an area with millennial dating pool.
So, over all something kid friendly, walkable for restaurants and theaters etc and have a lively vibe.

Single older gay male who's returning to Minneapolis area after 25 years.

i’m hoping to move to minneapolis from the pnw in the next few months to be closer to my sister and nephew, but am having a hard time with jobs willing to interview me when they find out i’m not local. any suggestions for how to go about that?

for some background info, i have a public health degree, but have ample experience in early childhood education (would like to not continue in this field if possible) and retail. im pretty open to service industry jobs but would love to somehow find a corporate job or a nonprofit/social services job if possible. does anyone else have any experience with successfully applying to jobs from out of state in a related field?

Why is it hard for my boyfriend to get an apprentice job? He has two years experience as an electrician, we applied job after job here in the cities and he hasn’t heard back from anyone. Hi! New to Mpls here (NE, if it matters). We opted to not move most of our stuff (we moved back from across the country and it didn’t feel worth it to schlep stuff we didn’t love), so have now stacked up A LOT of cardboard after getting a bunch of new stuff.

We’ve flattened it, but the city recycling pickup didn’t wanna take it bc it doesn’t all fit in 3’x3’ boxes. We already spent like an hour flattening, and I don’t wanna keep dealing with cutting it - I’ve got more important stuff to do in my house/yard and also like…a job.

-The drop off city recycling (specifically the south transfer station) would also require us to cut down the boxes more than just flattening them, so that’s out.

-A neighbor told me we can also wrap the stack sections in twine, but our next recycling pickup isn’t for a couple weeks, and I want this gone sooner.

Is there a drop off site I can take stuff to (maybe a neighboring town?) that won’t be so picky on box size as long as they’re flat, or am I stuck just calling a junk hauler and tossing vs recycling?
