Can't get SMPlayer to stop buffering while playing local files

So I installed smplayer for the first time a few days ago. I've only used it a couple of times and every time I do, it buffers for a few seconds, every few seconds. I have tried changing the player priority, increasing the threads used for decoding, as well as in general having hardware decoding turned on and off. I have also tried changing the "cache for local files" number. Nothing is working. It's driving me nuts.

I'm using Windows 10, I'm not sure what other information you might need to help solve the issue but if you let me know, I'll do my best to provide it.

What's wrong with buffering?

Try vanilla mpv first with -v verbose parameter.
