Looking for an Android mpv frontend.

I’m looking for a media player on Android that’d:

1. be audio-only-files-friendly. All mpv players I’ve tried only show a black screen when playing my audio files, which I often confuse for my phone being locked.

2. support playlists. I often play files in a row which come from different folders, or are in the same folder, but not in the order I want to listen to them.

3. allow to play files at speed ≠1.

I’ve tried mpv-android, mpvKT, mpvEx and harmonoid, the first 3 don’t support 1 or 2, and harmonoid doesn’t support 3 and isn’t open source. Right now my least bad option is VLC, but it tends to skip parts of my files, so I’m looking for an alternative. I’m posting on this sub because ideally it should be mpv-based, but if you know of something else that’s preferably on f-droid, I’ll try it too.

Try mpvRex, yes with the "e" in the middle of rx.

Okay, so I’m trying mpvrx, and if it doesn’t suit me I’ll try mpvrex.

Anyone know why they’re not on, say, f-droid? I don’t like getting random apks from GitHub like a (shudder) Windows user. Also, what’s up with them all having similar names?

Try out my fork , i added media3 engine that support dolby vision , hdr10+ natively if your device codec supports it , it also has a music player .

I don’t really need hdr et al, since I use my Android device to listen to podcasts (on a dedicated app) and podcast-like content that isn’t supported by my podcast app.

Does your frontend support a play queue (ie a temporary editable playlist) that could (preferably but it’s not a dealbreaker) have video and audio-only files in it? That’s the one thing I miss in mpvrx.

Okay, I download a bunch of video or audio-only files (that may or may not end up in different folders depending on how i got them). I listen to them on my daily jog, while my phone is located in an armband, so 1. image quality isn’t important, and 2. having to load a new file while the phone is in the armband requires contorsions so I want to minimize having to interact with my phone during playback.

What I do with VLC is that I add the files I want to listen to on my jog to the play queue, and the largest action I have to perform after that is adjust the speed (in the rare cases where I listen to two files in different languages). After a couple of days of mpvrx, my flow is to 1. create a playlist (I only have to do it once so it’s not a problem), 2. go to my files (browsing isn’t great. I haven’t found a way to favorite a folder like on VLC) 3. manually add and remove tracks from it (while VLC’s queue purged itself automatically when starting a new file manually).

Basically, compared to VLC, there are additional steps that I’d like to remove.

Thanks for adding dovi & hdr10+ support since almost no player has those on Android
