Rules Question Question about a card

Post image

So I played a game of commander with a friend and I was using the Family Matters Bloomburrow Pre-Con deck.

At one point I equipped this artifact with my commander but my opponent took control of my commander. What happens to the equipment? We decided it was unequipped since I still owned and controlled the artifact. Or would it have stayed equipped and triggered at the beginning of combat and gave them a copy of my commander?

The equipment stays attached.
You still control the equipment, so it triggers on YOUR turn and YOU make the copy of the creature its attached to.

Thank you, that makes a lot more sense. Though him stealing it made no difference since I was dead that combat phase anyway.

But at least I know how some equipments would work out.

Whenever a card refers to "you" it means the controller, this comes up with equipment sometimes but more often comes up with auras which would resolve the same. If you had enchanted your creature with a card that said "when enchanted creature deals combat damage you draw a card" then if they hit you with it you would still be the person drawing a card as theft effects dont change the controller of attached equipments or enchantments unless stated otherwise

Neither. You control it, it stays equipped and you still create a copy at the beginning of your combat. Essentially, them taking control of your creature doesn’t change what Helm does at all.

I'll add, since you control it; you can change where it's equipped on your turn still. So if it's like something that gives trample/etc... you can re-equip it back onto a creature you control (for equip cost) on your turn.

It stays attached to your commander but you would still have the trigger since it specifies that you (the player) gets the copy. It would be different if it said "the equiped creature gains XXXX ability".

i may be wrong about this but the equipment stays attached, you can pay to un equip it at sorcery speed but when the creature is stolen i believe it stays attached to that creature

It stays attached to creature, but you maintain control of equipment in that you can pay the equip cost and equip it to another one of your creatures. It doesn't automatically become uneqipped. It's not that different than if you played an enchant creature attached to an opponents creature. You are still the controller of it.

As I understand it, the triggered ability still applies to you on your turn, and the copies created would be controlled by you.

if the opponent gained control in response to the equip activation, shouldnt the equip ability fizzle since it no longer has a legal target?

Stays equipped, but you would get a copy of your commander when Helm of the Host triggers on your turn (non-legendary) and keep it even if they lose control of your commander [like if it was an until end of turn effect, etc.]

Also, since you control the equipment, you would be able to equip it to another creature you control on your next turn [Equip is Sorcery speed].

Edit: Correction to HotH, it creates a token of the equipped creature on OP's battlefield.

The ability is on the equipment, which OP still controls. Helm will trigger on OP’s combat and OP will create the token copy of their commander.
