I'm putting together a collection of songs to do with the holiday season. Now I have plenty of Christmas songs, I've got that covered. But I'm wondering if there are any musical songs that are about other holidays such as Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Yule, etc.

Any language musical is welcome, by the way. I'm open to pretty much anything.

I just saw the movie for the first time after only listening to Cathy's songs and I already knew that it would be heart-wrenching but discovering the whole story was worse than I imagined. The thought of growing apart and only having memories of the love you once shared feels cruel and makes me so scared that that'll happen to me.

However I love the songs and I would love to see the movie again but I've been crying for an hour so I don't know if my heart can take it😭. But honestly any musical that makes me feel this much I see as amazing, so big recommendation if you like stories about relationships.

I want to hear the WORST casts you could possibly think of. Whether that be because they can’t sing, they’re unlikable, or it’s just funny to think of. Nightmare casts will always be more fun to talk about than dream casts and that’s a hill I’ll die on.

Hello, this is my first time auditioning for an actual play that isn’t Shakespeare.

I have chosen this monologue, but I’m not sure how to perform it. I have no actions or diversity in my speaking when I say it and I’d like some help.

So i did auditions for Into The Woods for a local community theater production, and when I asked all the people I know who they think I could play, they all said I'd make a really good Wolf. I'd be thinking to myself "great I give of creepy predator vibes." Turns out thats exactly the part I get cast as. Whelp i guess I need to rethink my life

So I went to see The Last Ship in Amsterdam recently and have been thinking about it much more afterwards than I did initially. I know people have criticized the book of the musical for being too messy and crowded with storylines and I can understand why. That said, more and more puzzle pieces are starting to fall into place now.

For those who want to see the musical I suggest first listening thoroughly to the concept album The Soul Cages by Sting (1991). He released that album following multiple years of writer's block until he discovered he needed to emotionally deal with the death of his father Ernest Sumner in 1987. The album is the foundation of the musical so to speak. The song All This Time from that album is featured in the musical twice as it is sung by the main character Gideon and played at the very end when the Utopia is launched into the sea.

If you close read the lyrics of All This Time you will find out this song describes Wallsend, a city near Newcastle in the North of the United Kingdom where Sting was brought up as a child and is the main stage for the musical. The town is split up by the river Tyne and was the end point of Hadrian's Wall in Roman times. This is also where the name Wallsend comes from (and why the character played by Shaggy in London is called the Wallsend Ferryman). This is also the place where Sting's father died. Sting was brought up Catholic, but he has lost his religion. In the song he describes the way two priests give the final rites to his father, but his father has also turned cynical about religion considering the poor economic and living circumstances of the town. What Sting's father really wanted was to become a sailor and Sting describes in the song he would have given his father a sailor's burial at sea if he could have done that.

Fast forward to 2012/13 and present day. The Last Ship is about the major shipyard in Newcastle that used to build enormous ships for the government of the United Kingdom and other clients. The musical is situated in the 1980s when the shipyard was closed down due to decisions by Margaret Thatcher to stop giving government support. The workers at the shipyard will lose their jobs and decide to finish the last ship and launch it themselves.

If you combine the storylines from Sting's personal life, the death of his father as described in All This Time and what happened in Newcastle, this all comes together. The main character Gideon Fletcher I think is modeled after Sting. Sting's actual passport name, Gordon, and Gideon are even similar. Gideon moved out of Newcastle just like Sting did. In the musical Sting plays the role of Jackie White the foreman of the shipyard who is terminally ill. I think Jackie White is modeled after Sting's father who in reality was a milkman that wanted to have been a sailor. So Sting plays his father so to speak.

If you pay attention you will also notice that Declan Bennett (who plays Gideon Fletcher) sings very much like Sting. They both have the same timbre to their voice. Not identical, but similar. Gideon returns home just like Sting resolved his writer's block by mentally revisiting Newcastle.

Another interesting recent change was the replacement of Gideon's son Tom by his daughter Ellie. Sting has several children among which Joe Sumner (the singer of Fiction Plane) and Elliot Sumner (who also performs music and acts). Elliot has mentioned in interviews to be gender fluid or non-binary. I cannot say for sure, but I think Tom/Ellie are modeled after two of Sting's own children that also follow a musical/artistic career like the character Ellie does.

There are more details to point out, but the main take away is that The Last Ship to me is a clear autobiography of Sting's life repackaged in a rather complex way. That might be the reason why people are often confused about the book and call it crowded or contorted. If you read into Sting's life however, you will discover that the musical is not just about the shipyard but about Sting.

I’m having trouble finding a song that matches Audrey II that can show of my vocal range

Hi! I don't know if this is the correct place to post this, but I've just been feeling a little bit conflicted and down by how my college musical theater experience is going and I was wondering if anyone could relate or maybe give me a little bit of advice? For context I am a freshman this year, and when I heard my uni was doing a production of Mean Girls I was beyond stoked. Like, I was SO excited. I haven't done a musical, or even a regular theater, production since my eight grade year because I didn't have any opprotunities during high school, so I wasn't expecting to get a call back for a big part especially because I am a freshman but when I tell you I was literally one in like four people who only got called back for ensemble and no other roles.

Every single other person was called back for a bigger role. Literally like I wanna say almost 20 something other people all called back for these stand out roles and I'm just sitting alone in a chair watching them all go. And of course they all have their friends already, even the other freshmen who didn't know each other just a few days ago and I just feel so out of place. I'm already a socially anxious person, so the disapointment in myself and the loneliness just piled up and I had a panic attack on my second day there.

I'm not saying that I should have been called back because of pity, I totally understand why I didn't get a bigger role, but I just feel a little humiliated. I don't know how to deal with this, but I like to think other people have been in this situation before maybe? If anyone has any advice on maybe having more confidence with this or breaking the ice with theater cliques or just getting better with singing and dancing it would be appreciated.

My high school this year is putting on a production of Little Shop and I’m trying to find a song for Seymour. I’m a senior and a fairly experienced singer but I’m having trouble finding the perfect song. I thought I may do There are Giants In the Sky (very comfortable in my range) or Pity the Child ( a lot higher in my range). Does anyone else have suggestions for what song they may have done for an audition solo or something they think would fit the role better? All ear for any suggestions at all

I’m seventeen. I’ve loved musicals for years, but I’ve only just realized how much I want to be in theater and how it’s my lifeline. Only now have I gotten the confidence to start vocal lessons and even talk about performance to others. Am I too old to be starting now? I don’t necessarily need to be on Broadway(although that would certainly be a goal), but do I have a chance to just… consistently perform in musical theater? Local and the likes. Or is it too late?

I’m just curious what are your favorite musicals? Mine are Grease, West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, and Dreamgirls. I mainly grew up watching these and I rewatch these the most. I would love to get into more so please comment down below!
