I am F28, almost 11 weeks postpartum, I just had my first baby. When I was in my 39 weeks of pregnancy, they noticed a high blood pressure and I was diagnosed with Gestational Hypertension. Which I get it, it happens to a lot of women during pregnancy. I had to go through an induced labor, it was long and hard but the delivery itself was fast after they broke my waters. Because of the Gestational Hypertension diagnosis I had to start blood pressure medication, the prescribed me Labetalol.
My baby was born healthy, with double wrapped cord around her neck, and I had to get an episiotomy to get her out. But the most important thing is that she was born healthy. When it was time to breastfeed, i couldn’t, my body wasn’t prepared properly to start breastfeeding and my milk wasn’t coming in. I tried getting the lactation consultant but she was on vacation. So I chose to use donor breast milk in the hospital, because I honestly just wanted to breastfeed myself and I didn’t want to start with formula right away. Which there is nothing wrong with formulas, it’s just what I have decided as a mother. But sometimes things don’t go the way you want. By the time we left the hospital our baby has actually gained more weight rather than losing it because we started with the donors milk.
While I had lots of issues breastfeeding, I started pumping with hands free pump because my hospital grade one didn’t arrive on time. I was not producing enough milk, and I had so many issues, one week I had mastitis in one breast the next week my other boob had a giant clogged duct. I was in so much pain I cried for weeks. Even when I got the hospital grade pump it still wasn’t helping me. I tried everything to get rid of the clog, but nothing was working. After a long week and a half of torturing myself I finally decided to latch the baby back on to my boob so she could clear the duct. When I tried it earlier it just wasn’t working because my boob was too swollen, my baby was born with a small tongue and lip tie.
And by some miracle it happened, she cleared my duct and I was able to bring down the swelling and the pain and I was able to live again.
At the moment my baby is thriving and I am so thankful for my beautiful baby girl. She is gaining weight, smiling, holding her head and of course doing tummy time.
The reason I wanted to write this post, is because I am laying on hospital bed. It’s 12:15am instead of laying in my own bed with my husband watching our baby sleeping in her crib. I am by myself because of a stupid mistake I might have made along the way of my breastfeeding journey.
Somewhere between me taking the Labetalol for my Gestational Hypertension and because of my issues with breastfeeding, I decided to take Mommy’s Bliss lactation support Supplements. I don’t remember how I got on exactly that one, I think my husband made a mistake while getting it and thought it was the same as another one that I actually chose. But either way, today I had to get a liver biopsy because it seems that I might have something wrong with my liver. All of my scans say that the liver is healthy however the liver enzymes themselves are not, my numbers are in thousands.
When I first came in to the ER they thought I was having Tylenol poisoning. But I haven’t taken Tylenol for like a whole month before this whole thing started. And I want to describe how I knew something was wrong with my liver.
I started getting nauseous, I had really bad heartburn, I would itch my body when nothing has bit me and the itch just wouldn’t go away. At first I thought, oh god maybe I am pregnant again? So i ordered pregnancy tests, but no I was not. Thank god for that. “Although at the moment i would choose a pregnancy over what i am going through right now.”
3 days ago i started noticing that i looked a bit more orange or tanner, but I couldn’t put my finger on it and then i noticed my eyeballs looked just a little bit yellow on the sides. And I thought hmm I must be going crazy, but let me check these symptoms. And I kept trying to get the ChatGpt to tell me what was going on and it’s said go get your blood checked because you might have a liver failure. So I made an appointment with my OBGYN because it would be faster to do that then get an appointment with my PCP because he doesn’t work on Fridays.
Saturday morning I woke to see that my blood work was ready for review, however they wouldn’t be reviewing it over the weekend because they are closed. So I decided to check it out myself and I was in shock. My numbers were so high I wanted to scream but I had to stay calm. I called my mom and I told her everything and we ended up calling my sister in law she is a GI and when we told her the numbers she was in shock, and said we should go to the ER or try to make an appointment with our PCP, but he is closed on Saturdays. So we tried going through our insurance network to get a hold of someone through telehealth and I made an appointment for 11:30am but it was only 9am so I was still panicking and wasn’t sure what to do.
But not even 10 minutes go by when the doctor calls me and says, miss you need to go to the ER right now I am letting them know that you will be coming in. So I got dressed and took my wallet with my insurance card and my dad took me to the ER. The reason my dad took me was because my husband had to stay home with our baby and our doggies.
Right now I am going on to day 5 in the hospital and we are still not sure what is going on with my liver. That is why I got the liver biopsy this morning. All of my test came back negative and my organs look healthy. The doctor believes that the mommy’s bliss herbal supplements injured my liver. But then I did some more research and I found out that there is 8% of people who can get liver issues from Labetalol. And I thought to myself I could definitely be that person. Even though it’s a medication that is prescribed to people with high blood pressure and even people with liver issues because it supposedly okay. 8% of people still can get liver damage from this medication. However the doctors still believe that it’s more likely because of the herbal supplement and not the medication. Because god knows where those herbal supplement were made and with what exactly.
I wanted to make this post to make people be aware of things you put in your body. Because it’s doesn’t matter if they are doctor recommended or the most purchased products. Just because it worked for one doesn’t mean it will work for you.
I will definitely post an update if you guys want. At the moment the doctors believe i have an Autoimmune liver disease. I’m not sure about it tbh, I will just be waiting for a result from the biopsy. Hopefully it will provide some kind of info.
