DeSantis actually did something that wasn't evil or self-serving ... entirely.

As someone pointed out it's only state highways, meaning they're still all over the streets. So, seems like it's a pretty cynical empty gesture.

It’s a small step in the right direction that requires further follow through

Others are definitely following through. My City Council here in Florida added a discussion item to the agenda this Thursday about ALPRs and I suspect change is coming.

Unfortunately when it comes to mass surveillance the government is going to treat it the same way schools treat student council. Like yeah sure, you can elect a student body president that promises to remove Friday as a school day, but get fucking real.

I'm not holding my breath.

Prove me wrong, Florida, prove me wrong!

Steven Meiner, the mayor of Miami Beach, already vowed to fight the new Flock camera ban in court.

That's awesome. Hopefully more cities do the same

He's fighting for the city's right to keep the Flock cameras up, not fighting to take them down.

From what I read Broward, Duval, and Volusia county are also doing the same. Since the Governor called it a "digital AI surveillance state", it seems to put supporters in a bad position if they keep them around.

Far from an empty gesture.

for a state that is constantly passing laws to prevent lower level governments (county, city, etc) from doing anything they dont like, yes, this is an empty gesture

I mean, I think it's all they really would have authority to do without a full law and the process that entails

I will be uninstalling all surveillance cameras inside your home! But I will still keep the ones facing your home to see who enters and leaves.

great so let's never do anything then unless it's all or nothing, right?

god forbid anyone try to move the needle on anything

On this particular subject, yeah. I can't think of a single instance where a government decided to reverse it's mass surveillance initiatives due to public outcry. May as well ask them to get rid of the military as far as they're concerned.

Doubt. I'd believe that if it was another state maybe. But realistically this is probably still evil and self serving, we just don't know how yet. People like desantis don't change, they're trash thru and thru

a politician does something good, checks notes, "oh he's a republican. how can i use my mental gymnastics to make this bad."

0

u/russiangerman 1h ago

Considering their platform is literally "nobody does anything good", it's hardly mental gymnastics to assume there's a secondary motive

Unless of course they did something good on accident, God knows it's not a smart group

1

u/tdig216 1h ago

resorting to insults, of course. what could the secondary motive be? i'm curious how you think this is a bad thing in your mind

Still has a point about secondary motives, like, perhaps, winning the vote still.

Like they said, they more than likely see the writing on the wall. (They said blood, but still.)

Exactly, this is classic midterms pandering that always happens in single party GOP states near worryingly close elections. They get away with catastrophically terrible governance for 90% of the year, and then flood the zone with "actually look we care about you" stunts for a few months, that get quietly dropped after they win again since voters are morons.

Yep that is exactly what happens. I wish others would pay attention because it’s free, but a lot somehow still find that too expensive to do.

Trying to distract from the whole $10 million dollar Hope Florida scandal.

Midterms are coming up.

He’s trying to slow the h1b invasion that’s gutting the middle class. Thats something

-1

u/Bart_Yellowbeard 4h ago

That's not a real thing. Thats just bigotry who thinks it found an argument.

yo bro i am a dev in a mag 7. Great argument "its not real". I cant compete with this level of rhetoric, I bow to the master.

Yeah big tech def isnt using it to drive down the cost of labor, im just a bigot who "found an argument". Also- "Bigotry found who thinks it found an argument..." ESL?

-1

u/Bart_Yellowbeard 3h ago

It continues to be crybully bullshit from right wingers. No ESL, perhaps you need to work on your reading comprehension.

1

u/FunkoPopDisneyAdult 3h ago

not a right winger, but supporters of h1b want to polarize the issue to paint one side as racist and backwards, where the other is virtuous and open minded. Pay no mind to downward pressure of wages as the market is flooded with cheaper labor who cant push back against their bosses or they have to pull their kids out of school, sell their house and cars, and fly back to their home country on a whim. Im not sure why a large corporation would favor one type of employee over another. No, none of that matters, its only because people who hate h1bs dont like non white people, or that im MAGA. People who dont like their industry getting wage suppression by a flood of indentured labor are donald trump dick riders. Again, no nuance at all

Also i thought ESL as it was broken english, but i wont elaborate on that as i want to keep the argument scoped to the abuse of the original intent of h1bs

You might want to consider talking to someone about your anger issues.

Good day.

1

u/FunkoPopDisneyAdult 2h ago

“It’s not real” “you are just angry” I’m angry I spent a second talking w/ bad faith arguments
