Still wild to me that this entire time Republicans have been vehemently pro tax, just as long as you call them "tariffs".

Guess it's just one of those PC terms they love, like how they "hate" Obamacare but love the ACA, or "hate" Sharia Law but want Biblical law, or are "tough on crime" but worship a convicted felon who pardons criminals.

It's a "tax" they can sell to their base. "So long as you ~buy American~ you'll never have to worry about these!"

...except we live in a world economy. But you try explaining the global supply chain to a MAGA loyalist and all they'll hear is "global," equate it with "globalist" and shut out everything else.

Trump has been weird about tariffs for decades, and utterly resistant to understanding how they work and what they do. It's a baffling fixation. I'm not surprised the GOP has gone along with it, but I wouldn't expect them to continue to be a major platform plank after Trump is gone.

I'm convinced it's one of the only lessons from "Bizness Skool" he halfway remembers.

This is the first one of these signs I’ve agreed with. Some of the products my company makes are now subject to a 50% tariff - without getting into too many details - this cost is going to be passed on to my US customer … and ultimately the taxpayer who is funding this. It’s hundreds of millions of dollars- all because of a pissing match the White House started

And then when they’re ruled unconstitutional, the companies are just gonna leave the increased price because why drop it, right!

We won’t- but yea, I could see cheaper products doing that… it’s wild …. Not to mention the headache of going back and asking for a refund of tariffs after we paid ~ NIGHTMARE

Ordered a voltage monitoring device from Germany which was delivered through FedEx.

FedEx sent me a bill for $33. First time that's happened, but I also know that it's not the first time my buying something hasn't had the price increased by tariffs.

ohhh, sorry...

tariffs = extra revenue for corporations

u/i_am_the_nightman 39m ago

Corporations don’t get to keep the tariffs, they are collected by customs which is part of the government.

They're right. Good reminder.

Yeah it’s a good reminder that all taxes and on importers, manufacturers, or service providers are inevitably passed on to the consumer.

Taxes get paid to the government. These are mostly taxpayer funded corporate subsidies when the tariffs get ruled unconstitutional

A friend's house in small town Tennessee had their house burn to the ground because they don't have a fire department and a neighboring town's one engine was busy elsewhere. It took over an hour for them to even get a hose there to connect to the fire hydrant. Yeah Tennessee taxes are really low. But don't have a fire or call the police or expect good schools there. I'll take the taxes.

Taxes that actually pay for things, hence why California has the largest economy in the country and fifth largest in the world, because it uses real taxes that pay for real infrastructure and community building. Meanwhile the tariffs don't actually pay for anything for the people, they just go straight into corporations' pockets.

So corporate tax increases = taxes on people. If only the Democrats didn't run on a platform of increasing corporate taxes by 1/3.

u/redlionking 14h ago

Corporate taxes = taxes on corporations. Why would a corporate tax be a tax on people?

-1

u/Gry_lion 9h ago

Here is your challenge. You need to explain why a tariff is a tax on people and why corporate taxes are not a tax on people.

The argument is that corporations pass their costs (taxes or tariffs) on to their customers. In that sense a tariff and a corp tax are very similar

Of course the reality of corporations costs is much more nuanced but Reddit doesn't love nuance

Tell me you don't know what tariffs are without actually telling me you don't know what tariffs are.

u/rbnlegend 15h ago

Just out of curiosity, why don't you tell us your totally correct version of how tariffs are not a tax ultimately paid by the consumer.

6

u/majesticstraits 13h ago

What do you think tariffs are?

-3

u/LizDahan 17h ago

Duh…

I wonder if these people also want the corporate tax rate raised.

Tariffs have been used by presidents of both parties for decades because they protect vital domestic industries and give us strategic leverage on the world stage. This isn’t new.

u/i_am_the_nightman 41m ago

You are very wrong. Yes, targeted tariffs have been used to protect domestic product. Stuff actually made here. However, doing blanket tariffs against everything being imported has not been done been every president for decades. This is nothing but theft from this corrupt government.
