Recently purchased a home, discovering all the things I never knew I needed to manage. Before purchasing a dehumidifer, RH in the basement (partially finished) would sit around 75-90% according to el cheapo CanTire gauges. With the dehumidifer running, it manages to drop it to ~50% but the dehumidifer is running nearly nonstop. From what I can find online, 50% is about the limit before mold growth can become a concern, but lower would be better.

Running the dehumidifer like this, it seems like I'm looking at approximately $250/month in electricity cost alone based on the rated efficiency/how much water is being removed which seems... high. The unit is rated for a 1000-1500sqft room, whereas the basement is only probably 700sqft or so.

Growing up here in NS, we never had a dehumidifer (or AC or anything like that) and never had mold issues in our basement, even right on the coast. Am I being too paranoid about mold/damp, or is this high running cost just something I need to deal with until the colder months come in? Curious to hear what others are doing and their thoughts.

Hello! The student assistance that I got has no full time grants and over the phone I was told federal full time grants dont apply to 1 year full time programs? Im like 90 percent sure thats not true?

Does anyone know of the doctor in Mahone Bay accepting patients? I got a call but didn't catch the name.

This Nova scotia magnet we have wasn’t even made in Canada. Now I’m wondering where the sand is even from 😂

First visit home in 20 years - cried when we landed in Halifax, cried all the way back to Ontario.

Things have certainly grown, but what hasn't changed is the friendliness of the people. My kids could not stop talking about how nice everyone was and how beautiful it was everywhere we went.

Highly recommend Dalhousie & StFX summer accommodations- impeccably clean, secure, and very affordable. Another place we stayed was Cornerstone Motel just outside Cheticamp. Wonderful accommodations a few minutes outside of the village.

The Sou'Wester restaurant in Peggy's Cove was a pleasant surprise. We expected tourist trap but had a wonderful meal with quick friendly service. We went for the sunset and were not disappointed. Crowds were not too bad either. Another lovely meal was had at El Este Taqueria. Again excellent service and delicious food.

Antigonish was a delight - excellent meals and a terrific ghost walk experience. Still we could not get over how clean it was everywhere we went. Peace By Chocolate- highly recommend. The Wheel Pizza, just as good as I remember, but busy busy!

Cape Breton - beautiful as always! But the traffic on the Cabot Trail and the condition of that road 😬 We could not get over the drivers from Ontario and Quebec just racing around the most beautiful drive in the world! People need to slow down and enjoy the view! We spent a few days in Cheticamp. Given the number of tourist in the town we were happy we selected the motel that we did. So many people, everywhere.

Whale watching with Capt. Zodiac was amazing. We had excellent food at The Evangeline, Aucoin's Bakery, and Last Chance Sandwich. Highly overated, and over priced is The Seafood Stop. Our meals were disappointing - could not finish them, certainly not worth the line up or price.

Inverness beach was breathtaking, but again the town was over run with tourists. Line ups everywhere and no parking to even grab a cup of coffee. We continued on to Mabou.

Overall an incredible trip. Coming from northern Ontario we did not find the costs too different from what we pay here. It was refreshing not to have needles and booze bottles everywhere. I know these issues exist in NS as well - but certainly seem to be better dealt with in the places we visited. Everuwhere we went felt very safe, even walking around later in the evening.

Gas & food prices were actually better in NS than here. The twinned TransCanada was amazing. Secondary roads not so much...but still better than much of the TC through northern Ontario.

I think the biggest disappointment was looking into the cost of housing- similar to northern Ontario- but sad knowing that retiring to my home province will be out of reach. Kicking myself for not purchasing land when I first moved away for work.

Has anyone experienced going to the ER without a MSI card? I just a email on the weekend that I filled it out wrong and need to redo. So I won't be seeing that for a month or so. However I am having a health issue that probably needs to be looked at. I did call 811. If you don't mind asking what the cost of a ER visit without MSI?

Has anyone noticed a change in this program recently? For the 2025 tax year, my income went up slightly (less than $4000), yet I now have a deductible of almost $2000 whereas I had none before. No changes to family. I'm wondering whether there have been some behind-the-scene changes that haven't been well publicized? Has anyone else noticed their coverage change?
