What you’re looking at isn’t even close to the final product. This just gets it to roughly the correct dimensions and then it’s machined further to get it to the precise shape and dimensions.

So, you can make a part 2 ways.
The first is to get a mold to exactly the shape of your final product, liquefy some metal and pout it in. It will be a very brittle part. The crystalline structure of the metal will be all over the place.
The second way is to pour you liquid metal into a very generic shape, either a bar or a cylinder or something. You then work the material into another basic shape. The working aligns the crystalline structure and creates a much stronger part. The idea is that your work the shape into a blank that is big enough to encapsulate the final part. You then take the worked blank and mill off the material until you are at your final shape. Then you heat treat the part and treat the surface.

Super neat. It spins and expands on the first point until the second point constrains it. Then expands from the first and second point to the third point.
And of course, 3 points define a circle.
So you get consistent outer diameter manufacturing of a steel rings.

Ok now I have to know - looking at the color gradient in the finished item, the inner face glows more yellowish and the outer is red - is this just a matter of differential cooling or does the change in color reflect a material change as well?

That's because it's getting worked not just on the inside diameter, but also on the face. The roller the ring is sitting on has a notch. At the end, the expanded ring is thinner in the yellow section than in the red section and it's hotter because it got squeezed more. Notice the light reflecting off the step at the 6:30 position.

How does this affect the hardness of the product, is the inner face softer than the outer? It's been a LONG time since I fell asleep in a University materials Science class 😅

Does anyone know why it's asymmetric? The wheel on the right is closer to the ring than the wheel on the left, and makes contact with the ring well before the other.
