Waves were discovered to have evolved to do this in order to blend in with the other waves.

161

u/cans-of-swine 2h ago

This was actually 12 little waves disguised as one big one.

58

u/Hertzagobeanja 2h ago

Their trench coat was lost in another wave.

4

u/paincrumbs 11m ago

Vincent Adultwave

4

u/YoMomsHubby 1h ago

Well when it gets bigger im sure to go the other way.

Cant say thats my wifes thought too because, you know..

1

u/ScrotalSmorgasbord 22m ago

Just a wave disguised as a wave disguised as another wave

13

u/ShortStoryIntros 1h ago

This is also a very famous wave named Teahupoʻo

5

u/PRSFenderMartin 1h ago

Unmistakable

2

u/Money_Housing_2938 1h ago

I was on an eco-biological research expedition where we tagged him for tracking purposes. One of the most aggressive waves I've ever seen

3

u/AtrumsalusOG 2h ago

Yeah when you have computers do it you can evolve in any way you want.

Beautiful. The earth is such an amazing place. I wish we could be better stewards of it.

17

u/RegardedDegen 56m ago

Earth will be fine. Whether or not we'll be around to see it is up to us. /shrug

4

u/Compost_My_Body 7m ago

I mean.. if by earth you mean the physical rock, sure. if you mean a living earth, no that is far from guaranteed and not looking likely.

ocean acidification is pretty much one way. albedo is one way. nuclear half-lives is measured in millions of years.

plenty of planets have had water that are now permanently acidic oceans full of CO2.

evolution, oddly, is also measured on giant timelines, which makes adaptation largely impossible. even things like plants that love co2 will die.

the sad fact is that check mate exists - full stop - and we may be in it, barring enormous tech + ideology changes from humanity.

All countries*

10

u/Sweaty-Vinaigrettey 1h ago

No. Just a few are speedrunning the end of the world with their stupid ideologies. Let's not pretend lol

14

u/Snaxalicious 1h ago

And let’s not pretend that every country isnt corrupt and has pollution issues. Yes, few much worse than others.

u/Correct-Junket-1346 1h ago

We should be more respectful for it, but it's a slow moving beast that hits hard and at random with complete indiscrimination.

But we aren't stewards of it, it's a steward of us and should we turn conditions unfavourable we will be violently swept aside, as if we never existed.

2

u/Dewdrop06 48m ago

Impossible, unless it's not human there will always be people unhappy. A human is and can only be human.

6

u/Vaseline_51 2h ago

Yes but this isn’t real footage

2

u/my_taint_aint 2h ago

Could be. I have seen many beautiful things on our planet with my own eyes. I will chalk this up to a possible lol.

9

u/Foxwglocks 1h ago

It looks like the famous wave break at Teahupoo.

3

u/Effective-Draw-3188 1h ago

Looks more like cyclops is WAus

2

u/Foxwglocks 1h ago

Yea you might be right.

8

u/Lythro92 2h ago

It's so insane to me that we're at that point it "could be real footage"

Looks so real to me and the earth can produce spectacular views and sights, so yeah, could be real

6

u/my_taint_aint 1h ago

If you have a way to easily tell AI then please let me know. If people are in it, that's easy. This? 🤷🏼‍♂️.

6

u/8bitrevolt 1h ago

i mean the shape of an eagle's head and beak appearing in the wave while the sound of an eagle conveniently plays is pretty much all you need (0:10-0:15)

2

u/Betaateb 1h ago

Length is a good measurement. AI can't really do videos over ~20 seconds well at all. Some of the cutting edge models can do up to 30 seconds now.

So it is pretty safe, for now, to assume anything longer than 30 seconds with no obvious cuts(it can make a bunch of short videos and cut them together) is real.

1

u/jimbarino 59m ago

It is 100% possible to smoothly continue videos for an arbitrary length now. There's no cuts; it's only really detectable due to semantic drift.

2

u/LiamIsMyNameOk 1h ago

Why do you also sound like AI tho?

5

u/Lythro92 1h ago

Please don't. I cannot question my own reality.

2

u/my_taint_aint 1h ago

Shit. Were they talking about me? I just left my therapist. Not the best time to be asking this.

2

u/Lythro92 1h ago

Let's just share the confusion and be in the moment. We are real and we are good people.

3

u/my_taint_aint 1h ago

Still wondering if I am a bot👀

I just feel like waves don't usually neatly break in the middle and just the middle like the damn ocean in Moana. I won't say for sure it's AI, but it feels really wrong.

1

u/userhwon 1h ago

I don't think waves are endangered.

1

u/Acceptable_Job_5486 1h ago

If it makes you feel better, the planet is only mildly hurt and will eventually be healthy again, after it kills us off. Best way to remove a parasite is to burn it away.

yeah it's AI

28

u/ST0IC_ 2h ago

I saw it.

16

u/DadsRGR8 2h ago

So did I. 🦅

2

u/Riyeko 52m ago

Same

4

u/Public-Platypus2995 1h ago

I think the new ridiculous way to say that is “I seen it”.

5

u/Schmohawk2814 1h ago

That's most American wave that's ever waved

2

u/ostrichesonfire 1h ago

I’m seeing the friendly wave from Moana 🤷‍♀️

4

u/Unarmed_Character 2h ago

I just paused it to admire it!

4

u/Haloer77 2h ago

I didn't until you primed my brain to! Thank you!

1

u/CosmicallyF-d 2h ago

I was thinking it reminded me of Jackie the bald eagle.

I love how at one point it becomes a water eagle

5

u/Leucurus 2h ago

I saw watergodzilla

42

u/thedm96 1h ago

Anyone else really feel uncomfortable watching this?

17

u/Stay-Thirsty 1h ago

2

u/whythishaptome 1h ago

Is this that tidal wave at the end of The Abyss, always thought someone should be riding that?

2

u/Stay-Thirsty 47m ago

Point Break

1

u/Thosepassionfruits 58m ago

Kai Lenny saw this and said "Bet I could do a back flip on it".

9

u/NerdBot9000 1h ago

Yes, absolutely. Water is incredibly scary. It weighs so much and can move so quickly.

2

u/Sharpes006 1h ago

We cant breathe in it either

1

u/NerdBot9000 49m ago

WHAT? WE CAN'T?

1

u/EmotionalOrdinary486 38m ago

It's true! I tried it, and almost died

1

u/1nt3rupt10n 36m ago

I was thinking the same thing. Waves have always been very relaxing and cool for me to watch but something about this video in particular is oddly terrifying. I just feels ominous and heavy to me.

1

u/Majestic_Course6822 23m ago

This break produces some of the heaviest waves in the world. That’s a tremendous amount of water. Still shots of surfers in the tunnel are terrifying.

1

u/bankrobba 13m ago

Watch this if you really want to feel uncomfortable.

Beautiful and unnerving all at once.

1

u/maritimesNB 8m ago edited 2m ago

You probably should feel that way. I'm pretty sure that is Teahupo'o * on the coast of Tahiti.
Massive waves that break on a shallow reef. Beautiful spot but very dangerous.

18

u/Dapoopers 1h ago

1

u/andravens 1h ago

I absolutely love you, Reddit stranger.

32

u/ruckus_440 2h ago

Dude, you get the best barrels ever, dude. Just like, you pull in, and you just spit right out of em and you just drop in and you just smack the lip. Kwapppaaah! You drop down - snapppauughhuhhh! And then after that you just drop in and just ride the barrel and get pitted, so pitted. Like that.

2

u/Gooftwit 1h ago

Elite ball knowledge

45

u/SwolyMammoth 2h ago

That baby could fit so much plastic in it

14

u/Pm-me-ur-happysauce 1h ago

Real or ai?

14

u/ShortStoryIntros 1h ago

Very real.

Google surfing Teahupoʻo

1

u/8bitrevolt 1h ago

parts of it may be real but i highly doubt the head of an eagle miraculously forms in the waves regularly

4

This comment is scary. "What's a wave dad?"... "Don't worry, son, it's just something a computer made up".

10

u/Naps_in_car 2h ago

Is this AI? I don't think waves are real.

4

u/FlawedHotDog 1h ago

Come on, it’s a wave. Not a bird.

2

u/userhwon 1h ago

2

u/Naps_in_car 1h ago

Thanks, TIL!

2

u/Forward_Rope_5598 1h ago

That wave doesn't even look vaguely similar to the one in the video OP posted.

1

u/maritimesNB 3m ago

Here is a vid posted by Red Bull 13 tears ago of the same location:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26KzUnEbTUs

1

u/userhwon 1h ago

P.S. Got-damn I forgot how hard that tune slaps.

5

u/Abel_the_Red 1h ago edited 1h ago

This platform got wrecked by AI; even if it’s real, like another redditor gave evidence to, everyone is thinking “is this fake?”

1

u/TR_Pix 3m ago

That evidence doesn't look anything like the video

And even if it did its like, I've seen AI videos of dogs, showing me proof that dogs exist doesn't make that video not AI

8

u/batinyzapatillas 2h ago

Nice, but it ends too soon.

11

u/AtrumsalusOG 2h ago

Had to end at limit since thats how much the ai can do

7

u/e37d93eeb23335dc 2h ago

It’s too bad they took the video vertical instead of horizontal.

Where do waves get cartoonishly big like this? The only places I go the waves just get, kind of big.

1

u/OrdinaryAverageHuman 1h ago

Nazare Portugal

6

u/nasaspaceboy 2h ago

That's gotta be Teahupoo...

9

u/WaZepplin 1h ago

I was thinking that's where it was but then the rest of the lip didn't pitch out for the barrel

Somehow it's too thick too

I guess it's Cyclops

4

u/UniuM 2h ago

Cyclops but mirrored. Teahupoo gets much deeper

1

u/CynicalXennial 1h ago

came here wondering... it's gotta be.

1

u/wootwee 1m ago

Im thinking Box in Margaret River

3

u/Certain-Income-7070 1h ago

Is this true?

2

u/taffytwistx 1h ago

the color shift is so smooth it almost looks fake, nature just showing off

2

u/ElliotsBuggyEyes 1h ago

Bot ass post.

2

u/ThatCharmingGirl468 57m ago

This is actually so high. I wonder how people travelled by sea in the earlier years. It looks so scary

2

u/bodb_thriceborn 30m ago

Is it just me or is this absolutely terrifying

1

u/Moody_GenX 1h ago

Looks like Mavericks.

1

u/terminalbungus 1h ago

One of these days I'm going to HAVE to visit planet Earth. I heard they're going to be removing it from the platform soon!

1

u/Dasheek 1h ago

That scene in Super Mario Bros. where King Koopa gets devolved into slime.

1

u/SAINTnumberFIVE 1h ago

Is that at Teahupoo?

2

u/GWBIII 1h ago

Yes. Teahupo'o Tahiti. It's a real wave and it's majestic when there's a big swell.

1

u/similaraleatorio 1h ago

Nature is something, huh?!?!

1

u/EnsoElysium 1h ago

Oddly enough, this vid helped me see the appeal of surfing. It looks like glass, imagine riding through that, I'd be buzzing

1

u/bushman130 1h ago

I should watch Point Break.

1

u/Perryn 1h ago

It went from blue to green because of the longer wave length.

1

u/NaCl-more 1h ago

THOSE AREN’T MOUNTAINS

1

u/JunglePygmy 1h ago

Such an awesome force of nature

1

u/JediY0da 1h ago

Call Laird Hamilton!

1

u/nanosquid 1h ago

By "steadily", do you mean gradually?

1

u/Fantastic-Safety4604 1h ago

Terrifying Beauty.

1

u/gitgat 1h ago

Man, we live in one hell of a physics simulation.

1

u/january161 1h ago

this is what my nightmares are made of, brrrr

1

u/Butterflyteal61 1h ago

Beautiful ❤️

1

u/Outrageous-Hat-8975 1h ago

There are loads of slo-mo big wave videos out there to compare this to. They really look like that! This one from almost 12 years ago, of Cyclops, is one of my favorites: https://vimeo.com/108037945

1

u/Apart-Delivery-7537 1h ago

Does waves also come in small shapes? Like if I shake my bath water right can I make this kind of wave, but smaller?

1

u/Dopedbirdy 1h ago

Do surfers try to go between that hole in wave?

1

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 1h ago

Now that is a perfect example of how adding progressive slow-motion and music to a clip can make it better.

Bravo!

1

u/Overall_Fisherman133 1h ago

For a few seconds it turned into an eagle

1

u/WhoDat-2-8-3 1h ago

can i build a data center in between those waves ?

1

u/Foreign_Purpose441 1h ago

WHO HAVE THIS IN A HIGHER QUALITY??

1

u/Square-Gas-3640 1h ago

its just crazy water does that

1

u/HighlandSloth 1h ago

It goes from looking delicious and refreshing, to looking delicious and refreshing but different.

1

u/hunt4some71 1h ago

I'm just staring at this trying to figure out if I'm looking at the ocean or a screensaver from the early 2010s. There's something deeply calming about the steady shift, makes me think of those long drives home where the sky just slowly changes hue. But then I zoom in and notice how uniform the transition is, which ruins the illusion a bit. Like, did a computer calculate every pixel change? Or is this some new underwater light phenomenon I missed? Either way, it's hypnotic. I probably won't learn anything about surfing from this, but I will definitely save it to my 'watch when bored' folder for later. Makes me wonder if we're even seeing real water anymore.

1

u/xsnugglydew 1h ago

I could watch this on loop all day, there is something so calming about it even though it is technically a giant wall of water.

1

u/Topaz_ranch_dude 1h ago

the sea changes color but the sea does not change

1

u/Vast-Struggle-4785 1h ago

I'll never get over how incredibly awesome and scary the sea is. My favourite times are surfing on a beautiful day but the sea at night on a fishing boat is terrify

1

u/BangedYourDad333 1h ago

I just picture a dolphin riding it.

1

u/executor-of-judgment 1h ago

When the music actually fits the video. Imagine how fucked this video would be with that saxophone from Boys n the Hood.

1

u/RobertRamos 1h ago

Penises also naturally change color. But nobody really talks about that.

1

u/PreperationOuch 1h ago

Yeah that’s how physics works

1

u/Czhe 1h ago

Nature is so beautiful. We need to stop taking it for granted

1

u/AshamedProfessional6 1h ago

Amazing thanks for sharing

1

1

Nothing odd about how satisfying that is 👌🏼

Teahupoo- yeah? Chopes is an incredible wave. I’ve loved seeing the tow-in folks testing themselves on that beastie.
