Thai prostitution warning as 5,000 US sailors arrive in town after 200 days at sea

Why does the thought occur to me that Thailand is their first stop for this reason.

u/Fit-Perception-2243 6h ago
One night in Bangkok and the worlds your oyster.
51
u/brickne3 6h ago
I don't know why this made me laugh so hard 🤣
Half the kids on that ship probably never even heard of the song.
38
u/Fit-Perception-2243 5h ago
🤣 Gen X knows what’s up. Our sarcasm and apathetic attitude would not save us from one night in Bangkok. It makes a hard man humble and the tough guys tumble.

This isn't on them. Anywhere that big, longhaul ships dock have been centers of prostitution (along with gambling, drunkeness, and general outrageous behavior) since the bronze age.
My buddy was a navy sailor in the Obama era, and he has WILD stories about Thailand. The Navy has known about this shore-leave dynamic and tacitly tolerated it for literal centuries because it helps morale.
112
u/GateDeep3282 5h ago
Tolerated? When I was in the Navy, the US government tested the girls and gave them cards to prove they were clean. They were called smear cards.
13
u/defenselaywer 4h ago
How long ago did this happen, or is it still happening today?
37
u/GateDeep3282 4h ago
That was back in the 80's. Back then we had huge bases there, but since we dont anymore, I'm not sure.
9
u/throwaway098764567 2h ago
by the time i was in during the early aughts, folks were warned off visiting prostitutes and we had mandatory training for identifying trafficked people. folks still did it but if they got caught they got in trouble for it.

u/Turnip-for-the-books 5h ago
The Red Light district in Amsterdam exists because the city is built on hundreds of thousands of Norwegian timber pilings
56
u/TheDrunkWickerbeast 6h ago
My cousin is navy now. He has some insane stories. Apparently his ship instituted a rule eventually that you have to be drug tested soon after being at port
19
u/lemonpoundcaker 4h ago
The military as a whole gets randomly drug tested down to company level, and it's very normal for the unit to get 100 percent drug tested after block leave.
42
u/jim45804 6h ago
Hegseth absolutely chose this port so the sailors can hire prostitutes. It's a desperate and perverse appeal to masculinity.
38
u/Virtblue 6h ago
I mean lady boys are clean shaven. 🪒 🍑
5
u/cocuke 6h ago
So do you think that petey prefers them that way? If it's good enough for him then it's good enough for his men.
10
4
4
u/davvblack 5h ago
i get where you're coming from sorta but language like this is still homophobic. i think there's a way to emphasize his hypocrisy without rubbing up against "and being gay is something to be ashamed of"
6
u/cocuke 4h ago
I understand and it is not my intent. Unfortunately, it is difficult to point out how so much of what petey says and does is contrary to what he wants to project as what passes for masculine in his weird little world.
I do not care about someone's sexuality with two exceptions, the first being mine. My preference is my primary concern. The second is the person who decided that they are willing to have sex with me. If these two are in agreement, then that is all I care about.
The current collection of rejects in the trump administration are constantly at odds with their own thoughts and ideas. Their followers are just as confused. Part of my conservative upbringing is that we should not be dictating what people do so long as they are not doing harm to others.
The first gay person, that I was aware of, was a truck dive where my dad worked. No one gave a shit about his life outside of work. he was a truck driver who did what he was hired to do. My dad never spoke poorly about him or his boyfriend. I was never taught that it was something to be ashamed of but admit that I sometimes revert to my 7th grade mentality of making a point. My apologies for this.

u/fastingslowlee 6h ago
You think if women were isolated for 2 months around only women they wouldn’t be looking for sex upon getting to shore too?
This mentality that men are horny and women aren’t is so naive.
13
u/puff_of_fluff 5h ago
That’s not what they’re saying - he’s making a statement on the perceived masculinity of it. Basically “hegseth is a pig who thinks fucking hookers is manly.”
2
u/rankispanki 1h ago
Was a Sailor for 10 years and yeah, many, many of the women would go to the strip clubs right along with the guys in every port. Girls are actually hornier than the men IME
1
u/gabbadabbahey 1h ago
Strip clubs with men stripping or women stripping? And if women, are the female sailors bi/gay or just enjoying the general sexual vibe and hoping to pick up the horny male patrons after the show?
1
u/rankispanki 50m ago
Almost always women stripping, but I probably lost count of how many times guys from the ship would hop on stage as well, so it's not like the girls wouldn't be getting a show. I saw a lot of male asses in the strip clubs, it was very popular to get spanked for some reason.
I never really thought about why the girls came too, I think it was more just hanging out and having fun more than anything overtly sexual or trying to pick someone up.
Folks definitely were out on liberty tryna get laid, but it was more about just packing the most amount of fun into a short port visit since you never really got more than a couple days overnight/away from the ship.

u/TotallyARealHuman1 6h ago
I figure it would be harder for women. They would have a more difficult time than men going without sex just look at their main political priority, matters of sexual convenience that gets framed as "healthcare"

u/baphothustrianreform 3h ago
The multiple levels of ignorance you just implied with this comment is astonishing

u/Glittering-Pie-6465 4h ago
You think female sailors don’t have the pick of the litter while onboard? Especially after 200 days at sea?
1
u/TotallyARealHuman1 1h ago
I meant IF they didn't have that already. Clearly.
But IF they didn't, no way they would last.

It’s important to get komoromat on as many of them as possible as soon as possible to get them under control. Many of these boys are about to wake up with a ladyboy, even if they didn’t go to bed with one.

u/jfrorie 7h ago
Are they warning the sailors or the prostitutes?
281
u/dan525 7h ago
I think it's more like a weather system analogy. As they were getting ready to dock there was a Prostitution Watch. It has now upgraded to a Prostitution Warning.

Considering the mental stress they apparently have been through, maybe the later. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few assaults reported, sexual or regular physical that happen.

Yeah right, the MAs are out there getting blitzed out of their minds too. They'll run a random urinalysis when they leave port but no way are they testing every single person, they don't even have the capacity for that.

Too lazy to read the thingy. Was the warning to prostitutes or that prostitution might be significant?
Official government advisory to all prostitutes: you may not be walking right after these 5,000 sailors pull in.
Vs.
Official government advisory: 5,000 sailors just pulled in, prostitution gonna be 🔥, non-prostitutes be on guard.
44
u/t12lucker 6h ago
Warning to the prostitutes. The big ports that can accept large ships had large prostitution presence for centuries, but can you imagine how more than 5000 men who were for more then 200 days on a single ship will behave?
This is the best case scenario: https://www.theage.com.au/national/us-sailors-wear-out-sex-workers-20020502-gdu6bd.html
8
u/frazorblade 1h ago
The warning is to make sure the prostitutes pump up their rates. It’s a sellers market!
47
u/ourobourobouros 4h ago
it's weird the way we all accept that men take their negative feelings out sexually on marginalized women but everyone still acts like it's a joke and not living breathing rape culture
Like it's actually pretty disturbing that these are all supposedly normal men but because they've been put through "extreme circumstances" they're going to be so sexually sadistic to the local low income women that there will be injuries. But teehee?
16
-10
u/slap-a-bass 3h ago
Are you suggesting that I am accepting the behavior you’re describing? Where did I do that? Be careful with your words.
15
u/ourobourobouros 3h ago
are you implying your comment isn't intentionally flippant and jokey? come on it's a reddit comment section, no need to bullshit me when I can scroll up and see " 5,000 sailors just pulled in, prostitution gonna be 🔥" sitting there in your own words
-13
u/slap-a-bass 3h ago
It’s also in r/offbeat. I can make a joke about something…it doesn’t mean I endorse it. Chill out.
15
u/ourobourobouros 3h ago
your joke is rooted in sexual abuse and exploitation, you're the one who chose to make it
if having that pointed out makes you feel bad, maybe don't make jokes about women in poverty getting sexually penetrated so violently they're in pain for days?
1
u/mangledmatt 1h ago
Making a joke about something doesn't mean you endorse it. The same way that writing a poem, a song, a novel, a film, etc. about a subject doesn't mean you endorse it. Comedy is an art like every other art. A shit joke is like a shit poem. Criticize the poem, not poetry.
2
u/ourobourobouros 1h ago
"it's not endorsing the abuse of women, it's just making light of their pain for laughs"
oh ok, so you don't agree with sexual abuse of disadvantaged women, you just laugh at them and jokes about them
those jokes do nothing to disavow the behavior, paint the abusers as bad people or the women as victims deserving better, but this all says nothing but anything, huh?
1
u/mangledmatt 26m ago
Again, a joke can be a shit joke but saying that a topic is off limits to comedy is ridiculous. You're obviously not a funny person so you probably shouldn't comment on how comedy should be done. The same way that I don't really comment on film because I'm not a film guy.

Legalize prostitution in the US already
1
u/TheRealBobbyJones 45m ago
It wouldn't matter. The issue with prostitution is the blackmail potential. If a sailor today is caught with a prostitute by a state actor the proof can be saved until the sailor is more relevant. It's the same thing with gay service members. When it wasn't socially acceptable to be gay allowing gay service members literally just opens up a way for service members to be compromised.
1
u/Silver-Passenger-541 41m ago
Agreed which is why if it was in the US and legal there’s less risk of both
1
u/A_Dragon_bit_me 44m ago
Its also against the UCMJ to pay a prostitute so a few will get bust when they get back to the ship

8 years in the Navy. This is a good idea. I hope the bars decide to close early too. Maybe create a designated “Navy” area on the beach and have food vendors and music there. Those hero’s need to blow off steam.

Disgusting They should be docking in Florida or Texas to support American whores. This is just another example of claiming to be America first, but actually outsourcing cheaper foreign labor. There are plenty of out of work whores here in the USA. Our tax dollars should be spent here.
