I'm skeptical that they can come up with a story thats just as good for his character, the holocaust works perfect and parallels what goes on with the American people fearing and hating mutants. I do understand why theyre changing it because they'd have to do some time travel shit since wwII ended 80 years ago.
You're also ignoring even the most extreme death tolls are 1/6 as high and that includes 3 full blown uprisings and numerous guerilla engagements including military deaths on both sides and a massive famine that had nothing to do with political reform.
The Holocaust is perfect, but there are plenty of other events that would work just as well. The true hang up here is that if you are from a Western country the Holocaust looms so deeply in our cultures and histories, you don’t need to think too hard about the parallels. You just grow up with them. Thats why it’s not just fitting, but perfect.
Other genocides have the same core themes, but we don’t grow up learning about that stuff.
possibly, I admittedly dont know much about that event but from what im reading, it might work. I had a thought that growing up in Bosnia in the 90s could maybe work also. I still think the holocaust worked perfectly for magnetos origin though and its going to be tough to come up with something that makes as much sense for him.
