You don’t need something similar to the Holocaust. You just need an event that shows Magneto that humanity is violent and not worth saving. You can make him from Bosnia, Sudan, Rwanda, Myanmar, Uyghur from China, Yemen it doesn’t matter. It’s like Two Face in Batman. It doesn’t matter how his face gets disfigured, it’s that the disfigurement breaks his mind that matters.
Honestly I like the idea of him being a Uyghur from China the most but you know Disney would never go through with it, especially after that disgraceful special thanks in Mulan.
Making him Uyghur from China would be equivalent to making him a Latino illegal alien in the US that recently broke out of Trump's concentration camps along the border. Or Yemeni and his family got bombed during Obama's term.
Daring for sure, but are they really willing to endure the political heat from either country? Answer's no, the US and China are their two biggest markets.
Except it's only important IN THE STORIES because of his connection to the Holocaust. He's not a practicing Jew from either a religious or even cultural perspective on any sort of regular basis.
Note: I emphasized the "IN THE STORIES" because I do recognize that there are Jewish people that connected with him somewhat because of that backstory.
