He's like too masculine and tough for the role, per Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott finding out Ridley Scott made Gladiator II must’ve been devastating.

Someone should really tell the director.

4

u/DelcoUnited 2h ago

Someone should tell the producer to fire that fucking director.

11

u/bedisgood0100 The Fanatic 2h ago

The investigation is getting dangerously close to the director.

6

u/Akrybion 2h ago

Early 2000s Ridley Scott would hate modern Ridley Scott movies

u/cabinetnolanparts go back to the club 2h ago

Ridley blaming the casting department before remembering who the director was.

u/OkBrush7534 2h ago

and he literally hand selected mescal after seeing him in an IRISH ROMANCE LIMITED SERIES. like bro it’s on you if you didn’t like the work of what mescal delivered. plus, last time i checked, only one of them has been nominated for an academy award this decade

u/Timely-Entrepreneur7 2h ago edited 2h ago

No, Ridley, you’re 88 years old, you know your time is limited, you’re speed running through as many productions as possible and the quality of the films are suffering as a result. And on top of that, it was way too late for a Gladiator sequel, which was a completely pointless endeavour to begin with. I don’t think Mescal is leading man material but he is the least of that film’s problems.

25

u/Jolybeenexpert get stuckmannized 2h ago

Calling it a speedrun explains why he keeps skipping the quality side quests.

Missed oppurtunity to cast tom holland

Elliot Page G3 or no balls on Ridley.

3

u/SuspiciousAnt47 1h ago

Ya, poor guy needs the work. What was the last movie he was even in?

3

u/Fuzzy-Jackfruit5037 1h ago

Something something charted

1

u/MorningBluesBro 2h ago

Tom's holding out for G3

12

u/druidmain69420 2h ago

Somehow I dont think Paul was the problem with the movie

5

u/UnHolySir 2h ago

It was John

Am I a has been director?
No, it's Mescal who isn't chad enough.

5

u/DarkwingDawg 2h ago

The movie sucked hard and it certainly wasn’t the lead characters fault.

Like… it was painfully and stupidly bad!

2

u/ArtemisXD 2h ago

What makes you think he chose him and not the studio trying to bank of the new flavour of the month actor ?

3

u/FilmRoasters 1h ago

This is r/okbuddycinephile, do you think we know what the hell a casting director is for?

4

u/ArtemisXD 1h ago edited 1h ago

Then what the hell are you doing ? Dont tell me we're actually watching movies

3

u/Playful-Profile6489 2h ago

Excuse me, mate, were you there? No? Well, shut the fuck up then.

-Ridley Scott responding to criticism from Ridley Scott

3

u/ClydeStyle 2h ago

Too bad this guy wasn’t available….

2

u/FilmRoasters 1h ago

She definitely has gladiator vibes.

Sure Ridley and I’m not happy with you for not making better Ridley Scott movies.

5

u/joewindlebrox 2h ago

Tbh he was miscast. Seems like hes just saying in retrospect he didnt work in the movie. I think its a symptom of current Hollywood too, not very many rugged action hero looking male movie stars currently who are popular enough to lead that kind of movie and do it well.

1

u/Kanosirus 2h ago

There are plenty, they just didn't wanna soend the money on them, instead they went for someone farrr less popular = cheaper

3

u/joewindlebrox 2h ago

Who would be the son of Russell Crowe cast today that fits the bill then? There aren't many stars in the 28-35 year old range that make sense and your argument of "paying more money" doesnt stand

3

u/clvnmllr 1h ago

Make it again with Zendaya in the role

1

u/joewindlebrox 1h ago

Denzaya Washington

0

u/Expensive-Swan-9553 1h ago

Jai Courtney?

0

u/joewindlebrox 1h ago

He's 40 and has nothing close to a glowing career or being a household name and often doesnt play the lead in the movies hes in. He'd also be far cheaper than Paul Mescal to hire considering everyone wanted to work with Paul following multiple critically well received performances.

1

u/Expensive-Swan-9553 1h ago

40 can’t play 35?

1

u/Expensive-Swan-9553 1h ago

Actually - insane he didn’t hire Aaron Taylor Johnson now that I’m thinking about it…

2

u/joewindlebrox 1h ago

Aaron Taylor Johnson would work a lot better, but hes also been cast in what seems like every other movie these days

1

u/Expensive-Swan-9553 1h ago

Also would suggest Richard madden who I think would have been ok looks and tone wise or even Jack O Connell if he wanted to stay Irish. Orr maybe Egerton. Or fuck idk a hemsworth prolly, my point is movies are dumb and Ridley is washed and also I don’t watch or like movies

1

u/joewindlebrox 57m ago

I would have just cast myself. But I wouldn't ever see it because I dont watch movies either

Don’t make fun of Jonah hill he kills people

2

u/Imma_da_PP 2h ago

GODDAMMIT PAUL. NOW I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO MAKE PROMETHEUS 3.

2

u/goalstopper28 2h ago

Would he have said this if Gladiator II did well?

2

u/macronotice 2h ago

It wasn’t my shit concept, it was the actor who I hired and directed’s fault

2

u/pixelsteve 2h ago

He was probably tricked into casting Mescal due to his many previous other manly action roles.

1

u/Jerzilla 2h ago

Ridley you cast the guy

1

u/No-Effective388 2h ago

Scott's best days are long past

1

u/goonsnob 2h ago

you know who wouldn't talk shit like this? Tony Scott.

1

u/usersurnamee 2h ago

Embarrassing old man with a spotty track record of filmmaking

There's such a thing as regretting a casting choice

My Ridley in Christ..

u/Cranatic05 1h ago

The worst part about Subway ? It does not actually transport you. Believe me I tried.

Anyway, don't make the mistake I did, don't confuse Subway with the actual subway

1

u/Ciappatos 1h ago

Sure, the problem was the lead and not the dumbest script ever put to film.

1

u/Solid-Leading-7848 2h ago

Put Ridley in a retirement home. Shit post him with my grandpa to keep him company
