Thought so, those are older buildings so the layout seems a little weird, but it makes more sense when you take a good look around

Interesting - I had the impression this was newer-ish construction (it certainly looks newer than anything in the area). I’ll explore more tomorrow.

I suppose it could be new by comparison but I believe it's about 140 years old this year

Did this building previously serve another purpose?

My guess is that the numbers are from long ago, and they didn't want to change the numbers of existing residents just to make things tidier.
It seems charming to me. You would learn fast enough if you were in this building very often.

Whoever numbered these floors never had to explain it to a guest at the front desk.

Part of me wants to know if the rooms are exactly laid out as listed on that sign there

I appreciate the 0 and -1 as floor numbers. Keep straight M, L, and P1 is confusing by comparison.

This reminds me of the horrible numbering system the Virgin Casino in Las Vegas has.
 It’s a shame there’s no Level 5

annoying or infuriating, sure. Not a "you had one job" situation though.
room numbers could've been arranged like that before this became a hotel, or renovations/rearragements have happened over time and changing numbers would've been a tedious operation.

Am I missing the joke? The first digit of the room number is the floor level. It’s just a small hotel.

Look again.
The room numbers' ordering does not match the floor number ordering.
- Level 2 has rooms 28-33.
- Level 3 has rooms 23-27.
- Level 4 has room 34.

I don't envy room 34, imagine sharing a floor with a carpark
