Question Convergent Evolution

Ello. Are Wolves and Orcas Convergent Evolutions? I love both orcas and wolves and was curious if they were convergent evolutions. They both are a lot in common, but the one says yes and the other no?

I think you’re thinking too broadly here.

Wolves and whales do have a lot of shared ancestry, but their behavior is very different now.

Orcas and wolves evolved similar social behaviors and cooperative hunting behaviors. Some of their behaviors may be an example of convergent evolution.

But saying they are convergent evolutions is like saying humans and whales are convergent evolutions because both breathe air.

It’s just too broad. Because if you wanna go there and compare them just for their hunting behavior, you could also say the same thing about lions, African wild dogs, etc. and orcas.

They all hunt in social groups.

Wolves and orcas do share some similar characteristics, but I don’t think they have any similarities that genuinely classify as convergent evolution.

Whales and bats using echolocation is a good example tho.

No, it sounds like you're confusing convergent evolution with filling the same/similar ecological niches. Wolves and orcas are both pack hunters, etc, but convergent evolution would be if wolves also turned into whales
