Hey everyone! I'm u/jdmiller82, a founding moderator of r/palmettodemocrat.

I created this community as a place for Democrats, liberals, progressives, and other left-of-center South Carolinians to connect, talk about what's happening in our state, share ideas, and hopefully help build a stronger Democratic community in the Palmetto State.

South Carolina politics can sometimes make those of us on the left feel like we're few and far between. We're not. This is a place for us to find one another.

You don't have to agree with everyone here on every issue. Democrats and progressives are a pretty big tent, and thoughtful disagreement is welcome. What matters is that we treat one another with respect, participate in good faith, and share a desire to make South Carolina a better place for everyone who calls it home.

What to Post

Anything related to South Carolina politics and civic life is fair game, including:

• State and local political news
• Elections, candidates, and campaigns
• The South Carolina General Assembly
• Local government and community issues
• Democratic Party news and organizing
• Legislation and public policy
• Voting and election information
• Events, rallies, town halls, and volunteer opportunities
• Opinion and political discussion
• Questions for fellow South Carolina Democrats
• And yes, the occasional political meme

National politics are welcome too when there's a meaningful South Carolina connection.

Community Vibe

This is a Democratic and left-of-center community, but it doesn't need to become an echo chamber.

Liberals, progressives, moderates, independents, and others who want to participate constructively are welcome. Conservatives aren't prohibited from joining the conversation either — disagreement is fine. Trolling, harassment, bigotry, deliberate misinformation, and showing up solely to antagonize people aren't.

Debate the argument. Challenge the policy. Criticize politicians. Just remember there's another person on the other side of the screen.

This subreddit is brand new, which means its culture isn't already set in stone. The people who join early have a real opportunity to help shape what r/palmettodemocrat becomes.

I'd love for this to grow into more than another place to complain about politics. I'd like it to become a useful statewide community — somewhere we can learn what's happening beyond our own cities and counties, discover candidates and organizations doing good work, exchange ideas, organize when it matters, and remind each other that there are Democrats all across South Carolina.
