Double floor bed for twins?

Has anyone tried this? We currently have two little beds (used to be their cots/cribs) and a single mattress on the floor. The single used to be a bed that we removed due to climbing and jumping.

But they almost always fall asleep together on the single mattress and I end up going in at some point in the night- someone has rolled off onto the floor and is crying.

I’ve seen these Montessori style doubles with low rails, has anyone got one that both their twins sleep in?

And realistically how long before they want their own beds? They are 2y9m. But then a friend of mine has 5 year old twins who have slept in a double all this time and prefer it.

We have fraternal twins that are now 7yo. We moved them to a floor bed at about 1.5 years which they stayed in until about 3.5 years. It made life so much better. Ours slept terribly. If they woke up we just rotated who got in bed with them. They slept better. We slept better. Win win.

Ours was nothing fancy. We had two single mattress pushed together with a super king size bed sheet and mattress topper to make kt one bed. They slept width ways to give more room between them and to allow us to fit in with them with extra space. It was basically a super king size floor bed that we slept across the wrong way. Worked a treat!

Edit: we bought two adults mattresses as a strategic investment. We now use those mattresses in the bunk beds.

I have two of those beds in their room. They do end up sleeping together sometimes. I'm not really fussed if they end up sharing or not. They sleep like the dead and they don't disturb eachother.

It depends on your twins whether they will be fine sharing or not. Mine like their own soace sometimes and other times they don't want to be separated.

We have a double floor bed and are about to change to two single beds. The only reason we are changing is because one twin will turn horizontal across the bed in the night and it’s starting to disturb the other twin so we’ve decided they need separate beds now. They’ll still be on floor beds so they can freely move around the room and can share if wanted but they are at a point where some separation is needed. If you find your twins love sharing then the double bed set up could work for you.

My twins are three, we switched to this when they were about 2.5 (twin b kept climbing out of his crib so we made the switch)

It’s worked really well. It gives them each their own space if they do want it, but most nights they end up together so it allows easy access for that. It’s also roomy enough that I can sleep on one with one of them if needed. We have a cute little set up with some lights and ribbons on the top too that makes it a little whimsical for them :)

Edited to add: also going ahead and getting twin mattresses felt like a good investment. When we do switch at some point from the floor bed, our plan is to hopefully have them keep the same mattresses
