I don't know if it's ok to ask this here but ai doesn't know much about it his species of parrot, I just have a cockatiel so I spotted some red flags.

I don't know if he is in good condition. I just know he is fed only sunflower seeds. No toys, no perch (previously) but now have perches.

Bird is not mine btw. I don't want to jump to conclusions so am asking for opinions.

Hi there! So I’ve owned cockatiels for roughly 3 years now and currently have 6 of the little buggers ranging from a few months to 11 years. I love them, they were my childhood dream pet, and being able to not just have them but provide them with the best care I can manage is just a dream come true. That being said, I’m currently majorly upgrading their setup (biggest of note is replacing the multiple normal flight cages I’ve collected from Facebook with a brand new massive exotic nutrition Borneo cage) and it has me thinking about my next feathered adventure.

My end all goal is to get a cockatoo (likely the galah) but that won’t be for a long while, as I want to make sure that I have a lot more free time to work with that kind of bird, and own a home instead of renting so I don’t have to worry as much about noise complaints or property damage. I also think jumping from cockatiel to cockatoo may be a very harsh jump, especially considering my 6 are considerable easy and well behaved, with their little individual quirks as well.

My biggest thing is I would like to get a species that is more likely to be owner oriented than the tiels, but not quite as Velcro like as I know cockatoos tend to be. I would also love to have a species that is more prone to talking. I know it’s never a guarantee and that’s not a deal breaker for me, but higher probability would be cool. Now that I have a whole flock of cockatiels, while it has visibly very much improved their quality of life, definitely means they are much less interested in snuggling up with me.

I was looking at parrotlets or lovebirds for a second, and as much as I think I would enjoy them, I don’t think I want to get anything smaller than my tiels.

I do very much like amazons, but I know they tend to be prone to more behavioral issues, which I don’t necessarily mind, but also don’t think I’m ready for without more experience outside of tiels.

Very fascinated in Indian ringnecks, but have very little exposure or knowledge about. Of course will be doing extensive research on any animal I bring home, but would perhaps like some guidance on what birds should be on that list.

Admittedly, I’m not a big fan of most popular conure species. While I’m good friends with both my roommates and they don’t mind bird noises, I know from experience sun conures are LOUD, and not always for any particular reason, I can live with screaming for food, water, attention, occasional fits. But I think sun conures just like to scream for fun. My mom is a chronic greencheek lover, I love visiting, I babysit hers about every other weekend, and he’s a lot better than most I’ve met and the 2 she’s owned previously (plus another 2 that we fosted for a while) and I don’t mind being bit when training or I make a mistake or an occasional whatever, but the constant nippiness that comes with them is not my favorite, and I’m a big believer that all animals come with pros and cons and you have to be ready to deal with the cons. We’ve also had a Quaker before, which I do really like actually, I know they’re prone to cage aggression but that’s a con I’m willing to work with. The only issue there is they’re not super common where I am in rescues or from breeders. And I avoid pet chops especially corporate chain ones.

I do plan on once I have current birds fully reset up and settled in, and get a better idea of what I should be looking at, going to my local rescue and seeing who is available there. My other thing is that I do like being able to provide same species companions, but I know that isn’t best for every species and of course not every individual.

But yeah, generally tltr:

Small to medium species you’d recommend after having cockatiels?
Pros and cons lists?
Do they do better on their own or with a pair? A flock?
Species specific quirks?
How accessible do they tend to be by rescue or breeder?
How’s the puberty phase?
Noise levels?
What should I know about that particular bird? Do you have any particular books or sites you think are educational for that specific species?

I have ants in my bird room even though I clean regularly and I couldn’t figure out where they were coming from until I noticed them coming from a small gap in the floor

I have birds in the room so I can’t use any sprays or insecticides because I’m worried about the fumes being harmful to them

Has anyone dealt with ants in a bird room before and found a safe way to get rid of them?

My conure has been doing this for the past 3-4 days and it seems very unusual . For context she's 2 years old and a female

I (25F) started taking care of a bird that belonged to my brother (32M). This bird is an Indian ringneck and my brother took him in when he was a baby. He has fallen down and fractured both of his wings and since this bird didn't get attention his wings have healed in wrong directions. Now that I'm taking care of him, I can't see him in pain. When his feathers are growing, he's too scared to preen them. He loses his balance a lot; can't be carried on hand, can't sit on sticks. He can't open his wings, he even falls down while walking. When he falls he feels the pain again and starts trembling. I found out that if I want to fix his wings it'll be a far more painful procedure and it might not be accurate either. What should I do?

Hello, I posted about this in two some of my own local subreddits, but I want to get your input and hear your stories. Four days ago Ava, our orange-winged Amazon parrot, escaped our house and disappeared. She was only possibly sighted once after she bolted out, by one of our neighbors, and since then we haven’t heard or seen her. We’ve been calling out for her, playing flock calls, hanging up flyers where we can (where we are is very restrictive in where you can post them unfortunately), reaching out to veterinary hospitals, pet stores, animal control, and animal shelters and posting on countless Facebook groups, as well as Pawboost, Nextdoor and Ring Neighbors. Still nothing though, and I’m only getting more frantic and scared. Ava was like the little sister we never really had…she could be pretty timid, but in true Amazon fashion she was also very funny and mischievous. She’d splash my mother with her water bowl and literally gloat about it, pumping her head. She doesn’t talk, but she makes all kind of noises—waahs, wolf whistles, something that sounds like an 80s Atari game…she was a part of the family, and the past few days have been nothing short of a never-ending nightmare. I’m also worried by how long she’s been out there and how far she might have gotten. I’ve heard parrots often tend to stay close, but I’ve also heard they can fly pretty far away. Making matters worse they decided to pave our street; I imagine she might have been spooked further out. We’re in Monmouth County in central New Jersey; it’s forested in a lot of places but there’s also a lot of suburbs.  Like I said we’ve been doing all we can, but is there anything else we can do to bring her home? And have any of you managed to get larger parrots back in similar situations?

Hey guys, I recently posted a couple of weeks about my sun conure limping and unable to walk on right side. He had an xray today and turns out he has dislocated his right hip. The vet said manual manipulation is almost impossible due to how small and fragile a sun conure is. They said the only treatment options are either leave as and make him as comfortable as possible or surgery. Has anyone experienced this before? I’m very worried and really sad to see him not able to walk anymore. He’s still eating normally and himself but only really flies instead of walking. I’m in the process of setting him up a hospital cage and trying to limit his movement as best as possible. We are still waiting for a second opinion from the avian vet who deals with surgery/ orthopaedics before we finalise what to do next. Any suggestions or information welcome and would be highly appreciated. 🙏

Hi!!! Im looking to rehome my budgies due to a dangerous home enviorment. I am renting and we suddenly have mice that I believe may be drawn in from another unit in my building, as I keep my apartment near entirely spotless due to the birds.

My landlord is putting down rat poison, regardless of my protests, and I cannot afford to break lease. I am afraid they may start spraying things, as my landlord does not care as "they are just birds"! Im putting my budgies lives first and trying to find homes for them asap. I am willing to give their entire setup away with them.

Located in Northern WI. They are not handtamed, however, due to their prior enviorments that were abusive (they were rescues, I would have never gotten them otherwise). I am posting this everywhere, and submitting to my nearest sanctuary to surrender. Please let me know asap!! please note I am most fully available during the week due to work!!

I've been wanting to purchase a UV light after they were recommended to me by my vet (I'm aware you can bring birds outside for vitamin D but I don't live in a very sunny place, and my bird doesn't enjoy being moved around ).

However, when trying to pick one, I could not tell the difference between any.

she's had feet problems in the past, including bumblefoot twice, but it's always on the bottom of her foot. it doesn't look swollen at all, definitely not as much as it would be if it was bumblefoot. is it just some nasty pimple or something? is that something parrots can get? I'm going camping next week and she'll be getting a full checkup when she gets boarded at the vet next Monday, but could this be something that needs to be seen more urgently? it doesn't seem to be bothering her at all, I haven't even caught her chewing at it, which she always does when it's bumblefoot.

Hi guys, my lovebird is currently slouched over while covered in his cage. He just spent 2 nights in a smaller cage from Petco because of a sudden circumstance. He slept clinging to the wall instead of on a flat perch like he is right now. So i dont know if he is just exhausted and didn’t sleep well, or if he is dying. He will pick himself up/wake up but then slowly slouch over again within five minutes or so.

Hatch date on this character was Oct 8, 2025. A shop literally gave it away with proof that we had a home cage setup already, because they'd had it for six months and not sold! Friendly but won't do hands yet. When we brought it home Friday it wouldn't let us near it, next day I had it taking millet and Nutriballs from my fingers. Still nowhere near stepping up onto my finger. Trying to get good action shots of it flying around my closed home office room, but too fast! It seems to like plopping itself on my space collection shelf and showed interest in this bird toy/ball. Morning after we got it we let it out on top of cage and opened window by cage. It stared like it'd never seen sunlight before. Husband calling it Jingo, that'll work for boy or girl I guess.

I apparently caused great uproar on a landlord question group because I told someone you shouldn’t be able to smell a bad odour from a bird never mind out of a door/ through the whole home. So, I’m asking this group because I DO wanna verify If me and google ( plus my experience) is right

Specifically my comment was for budgies or other “ low smelling” parrots, especially ones that do not produce as much dust as cockatoos etc.

Multiple people including sensitive nose people have been in my house or seen my birds, non have complained about a odour never less being able to smell I owned birds before seeing them

Last night and this evening there has been a ridiculous amount of very very loud aircrafts every 15 min or so from 20pm til 22pm. My poor parrotlets freak out every time. And very understandably so, the sound is deafening even with all repercussions in place.

Turns out there are military night drill every evening this week who's routes are directly over our city. I've already send a complaint about the excessive noise but I know it won't do anything. So the next 4 days will be hell for me and my boys.

Worst part is, I'm out around those times for this week specially. Will they be okay or should I nerf my plans to stay with them. (I live in a studio, so moving them to a quieter spot is not an option sadly)

One of them starts tail bobbing from stress and this is one of those situations he does it. My poor little guy.
