Perform these steps before posting about POST/boot/no video problems!

"No POST", "system won't boot", and "no video output" troubleshooting checklist

This checklist is a compilation of troubleshooting ideas from many forum members. It's very important to actually perform every step in the checklist if you want to effectively troubleshoot your problem.

  • 1.Did you carefully read the motherboard owners manual?

  • 2.Did you plug in the 4/8-pin CPU power connector located near the CPU socket? If the motherboard has 8 pins and your PSU only has 4 pins, you can use the 4-pin connector. The 4-pin connector USUALLY goes on the 4 pins located closest to the CPU. If the motherboard has an 8-pin connector with a cover over 4 pins, you can remove the cover and use an 8-pin plug if your power supply has one. This power connector provides power to the CPU. Your system has no chance of posting without this connector plugged in! Check your motherboard owners manual for more information about the CPU power connector. The CPU power connector is usually referred to as the "12v ATX" connector in the owner's manual. This is easily the most common new-builder mistake.

  • 3.Did you install the standoffs under the motherboard? Did you place them so they all align with the screw holes in the motherboard, with no extra standoffs touching the board in the wrong place? A standoff installed in the wrong place can cause a short and prevent the system from booting.

  • 4.Did you verify that the video card is fully seated? (may require more force than a new builder expects.)

  • 5.Did you attach ALL the required power connector(s) to the video card? (some need two, some need none, many need one.) It is best to use cables connected directly to the PSU. Only use adapters if absolutely necessary.

  • 6.Have you tried booting with just one stick of RAM installed? (Try each stick of RAM individually in each RAM slot.) If you can get the system to boot with a single stick of RAM, you should enable an XMP profile or manually set the RAM speed, timings, and voltage to the manufacturer's specs in the BIOS before attempting to boot with all sticks of RAM installed. If your motherboard supports XMP profiles, that is the best way to get your RAM running at its rated specs. Nearly all motherboards default to the standard RAM voltage (1.8v for DDR2, 1.5v for DDR3, & 1.2v for DDR4). If your RAM is rated to run at a voltage higher than the standard voltage, the motherboard will underclock the RAM for compatibility reasons. If you want the system to be stable and to run the RAM at its rated specs, you should either enable an XMP profile or manually set the values in the BIOS. Many boards don't supply the RAM with enough voltage when using "auto" settings which causes stability issues.

  • 7.Did you verify that all memory modules are fully inserted? (may require more force than a new builder expects.) It's a good idea to install the RAM on the motherboard before it's in the case.

  • 8.Did you verify in the owners manual that you're using the correct RAM slots? The following image is just an example. Verify in the owners manual the recommended RAM slots to use for single, dual, triple, or quad channel applications. This will vary depending on motherboard manufacturer, number of supported RAM channels, and how many sticks of RAM are being used.

  • 9.Did you remove the plastic guard over the CPU socket? (this actually comes up occasionally.)

  • 10.Did you install the CPU correctly? There will be an arrow on the CPU that needs to line up with an arrow on the motherboard CPU socket. There may also be a notch that will only line up in one direction. Be sure to pay special attention to that section of the manual!

  • 11.Are there any bent pins on the motherboard/CPU? This especially applies if you tried to install the CPU with the plastic cover on or with the CPU facing the wrong direction.

    1. If using an after market CPU cooler, did you get any thermal paste on the motherboard, CPU socket, or CPU pins? Did you use the smallest amount you could?
  • 13.Is the CPU fan plugged in? Some motherboards will not boot without detecting that the CPU fan is plugged in to prevent burning up the CPU.

    1. If using a stock cooler, was the thermal material on the base of the cooler free of foreign material, and did you remove any protective covering? If the stock cooler has push-pins, did you ensure that all four pins snapped securely into place? The easiest way to install the push-pins is outside the case sitting on a non-conductive surface like the motherboard box. Read the instructions! The push-pins have to be turned the OPPOSITE direction as the arrows for installation. This means with the arrow pointing away from the heatsink.
    1. Are any loose screws laying on the motherboard, or jammed against it? Are there any wires running directly under the motherboard? You should not run wires under the motherboard since the soldered wires on the underside of the motherboard can cut into the insulation on the wires and cause a short. Some cases have space to run wires on the back side of the motherboard tray.
    1. Did you ensure you discharged all static electricity before touching any of your components? Computer components are very sensitive to static electricity. It takes much less voltage than you can see or feel to damage components. You should implement some best practices to reduce the probability of damaging components. These practices should include either wearing an anti-static wrist strap or always touching a metal part of the case with the power supply installed and plugged in, but NOT turned on. You should avoid building or working on a computer on carpet. Working on a smooth surface is the best if at all possible. You should also keep fluffy the cat, children, and Fido away from computer components.
    1. Did you check the debug LEDs, Q-code display, or install the system speaker (if provided) so you can check codes in the manual? Most modern motherboards come with debug LEDs or a Q-code display. A system speaker is NOT the same as normal speakers that plug into the back of the motherboard. A system speaker plugs into a header on the motherboard that's usually located near the front panel connectors. Debug LEDs, Q-code displays, or a system speaker are critical components when trying to troubleshoot system problems. You are flying blind without them. The motherboard owner's manual will have a list of codes you can reference. If your case or motherboard didn't come with debug LEDs, a Q-code display, or system speaker you can buy a system speaker for cheap here: http://www.cwc-group.com/casp.html
    1. Did you read the instructions in the manual on how to properly connect the front panel plugs? (Power switch, power led, reset switch, HD activity led) Polarity does not matter with the power and reset switches. If power or drive activity LED's do not come on, reverse the connections. For troubleshooting purposes, disconnect the reset switch. If it's shorted, the machine either will not POST at all, or it will endlessly reboot.
    1. Did you turn on the power supply switch located on the back of the PSU? The switch should be depressed on the side with an I, the O means off. Is the power plug on a switch? If it is, is the switch turned on? Is there a GFI circuit on the plug-in? If there is, make sure it isn't tripped. You should also make sure the power cord isn't causing the problem. Try swapping it for a known good cord if you have one available.
    1. Is your CPU supported by the BIOS revision installed on your motherboard? Most motherboards will post a CPU compatibility list on their website.
    1. Have you tried resetting the CMOS? The motherboard manual will have instructions for your particular board. User Darkbreeze also provided the following:

BIOS Hard reset procedure

Power off the unit, switch the PSU off and unplug the PSU cord from either the wall or the power supply.

Remove the motherboard CMOS battery for five minutes. In some cases, it may be necessary to remove the graphics card to access the CMOS battery.

During that five minutes, press the power button on the case for 30 seconds. After the five minutes are up, reinstall the CMOS battery making sure to insert it with the correct side up just as it came out.

If you had to remove the graphics card you can now reinstall it, but remember to reconnect your power cables if there were any attached to it as well as your display cable.

Now, plug the power supply cable back in, switch the PSU back on and power up the system. It should display the POST screen and the options to enter CMOS/BIOS setup. Enter the bios setup program and reconfigure the boot settings for either the Windows boot manager or for legacy systems, the drive your OS is installed on if necessary.

Save settings and exit. If the system will POST and boot then you can move forward from there including going back into the bios and configuring any other custom settings you may need to configure such as Memory XMP profile settings, custom fan profile settings or other specific settings you may have previously had configured that were wiped out by resetting the CMOS.

In some cases it may be necessary when you go into the BIOS after a reset, to load the Optimal default or Default values and then save settings, to actually get the hardware tables to reset.

http://www.spotht.com/2010/02/reset-bios-clear-cmos.html

    1. If you have integrated video and a video card, try the integrated video port. Resetting the bios, can make it default back to the onboard video. If you are trying to use HDMI outputs, try using DVI or VGA instead. Sometimes, the HDMI ports won't work until the correct drivers are installed.
    1. Make certain all cables and components including RAM and expansion cards are tight within their sockets.

I also wanted to add some suggestions that jsc often posts. This is a direct quote from him:

"Pull everything except the CPU and HSF. Boot. You should hear a series of long single beeps indicating memory problems. Silence here indicates, in probable order, a bad PSU, motherboard, or CPU - or a bad installation where something is shorting and shutting down the PSU.

To eliminate the possibility of a bad installation where something is shorting and shutting down the PSU, you will need to pull the motherboard out of the case and reassemble the components on an insulated surface. This is called "breadboarding" - from the 1920's home-brew radio days. I always breadboard a new or recycled build. It lets me test components before I go through the trouble of installing them in a case.

If you get the long beeps, add a stick of RAM. Boot. The beep pattern should change to one long and two or three short beeps. Silence indicates that the RAM is shorting out the PSU (very rare). Long single beeps indicates that the BIOS does not recognize the presence of the RAM.

If you get the one long and two or three short beeps, test the rest of the RAM. If good, install the video card and any needed power cables and plug in the monitor. If the video card is good, the system should successfully POST (one short beep, usually) and you will see the boot screen and messages.

Note - an inadequate PSU will cause a failure here or any step later.

Note - you do not need drives or a keyboard to successfully POST (generally a single short beep).

If you successfully POST, start plugging in the rest of the components, one at a time."

If you suspect the PSU is causing your problems, below are some suggestions by jsc for troubleshooting the PSU. Proceed with caution. I will not be held responsible if you get shocked or fry components.

"The best way to check the PSU is to swap it with a known good PSU of similar capacity. Brand new, out of the box, untested does not count as a known good PSU. PSU's, like all components, can be DOA.

Next best thing is to get (or borrow) a digital multimeter and check the PSU.

Yellow wires should be 12 volts. Red wires: +5 volts, orange wires: +3.3 volts, blue wire : -12 volts, violet wire: 5 volts always on. Tolerances are +/- 5% except for the -12 volts which is +/- 10%.

The gray wire is really important. It should go from 0 to +5 volts when you turn the PSU on with the case switch. CPU needs this signal to boot.

You can turn on the PSU by completely disconnecting the PSU and using a paperclip or jumper wire to short the green wire to one of the neighboring black wires.

View: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FWXgQSokF4&feature=youtube_gdata

This checks the PSU under no load conditions, so it is not completely reliable. But if it can not pass this, it is dead. Then repeat the checks with the PSU plugged into the computer to put a load on the PSU. You can carefully probe the pins from the back of the main power connector."

She cannot open applications or anything and has been opening stuff through Win + R. Also her internet dropped connection with her wifi when this started. I'm pretty sure the monitor is still on when it goes black so I don't believe its a monitor issue (not sure).

She tried:

Turning on and off
Unplugging and re-plugging
She tried to restart/ kill explorer.exe in task manager; it won't let her/ doesn't work
Tried to boot into safe mode; It just threw that error and went straight to desktop
Checked drivers and did some scan command to find issues; nothing came up

I'm not a tech wizard sadly and have never seen something like this before. I feel like its a component issue but Idk man. At this point I just want to know what the fuck is going on so I can break it to her that its a component issue or something.

I screwed up…
I’m On Windows 11. I Upgraded CPU which logged me out of my Microsoft account. Not a local account but cloud service Microsoft account.

Used proton email to set up Microsoft account, locked out of that email. I haven’t used the email for 5 years after setting up PC. Proton is saying email doesn’t exist.
Contacted Proton, no response. No recovery email set up for either Proton or Microsoft.

50/50 chance bit locker is turned on. I don’t have pass phrase if it is.

Unable to launch PC into ‘Safe Mode’
Power on, wait 8 seconds, power off, wait 2 seconds. Repeat 6 times. This launches ‘American Megatrends’ then Bios. I’m probably misunderstanding safe mode.

Troubleshooting on a 2014 MacBook Air (OS X Yosemite) version 10.10.5. Too old for newer updates.
Have a USB 64gb.
Trying to download Hirens BootCD PE, need Rufus.ie to read Hirens. Rufus doesn’t work on Mac.

I couldn’t get Hirens to work so I bought a new Win11 USB with key from the office supply store.

I disconnected my sata ssd’s and left my m.2 installed to limit storage download location.

Plugged the new Win11 usb into pc usb port, tried 5 of the 9 usb ports on the PC and spammed f8 to get to select boot device. Selected the new Win11 USB. The screen then goes black and nothing happens. Waited about 20 minutes per usb port.

Motherboard is an Asus G15DK (B550M-K prime AM4)
Bios is soft locked to Version 307, can’t get a newer bios without getting a beta key from Asus… or so I read.
Old CPU R5 5600X
New CPU R7 5800X3D
GPU Gigabyte 9070XT drivers where up to date as of 3 weeks ago

I have not tried resetting CMOS.

I know that I’m a dung eater for buying more Microsoft software to fix my PC but I’m not quite ready for Linux.

TLDR:
Win11, upgraded cpu. Got logged out of Microsoft account. Lost access to proton email that was connected. Tried some crap, bought new Win11 usb. Black screen on boot. Sad man watch’s Band of Brothers on repeat.

OPEN Help with SSD at 100%

Upvotes

Hi all, having this issue with my secondary SSD (Kingston SNV2S2000G) showing up with 100% usage continuously. Has happened previously but always resolved itself previously.

Steps completed:

  1. Updated BIOS on PC
  2. Updated SSD firmware
  3. Reinstalled windows

I've checked to see if it was the drive's fault (by using Safe Mode) and tested the drive. I've also checked the drive health and speeds and nothing out of the ordinary.

PERFORMANCE Is this okay to have PC this way

Post image
736 Upvotes

I have a computer that is my secondary gaming pc, an "older" system ryzen 3700x and a 3070ti. I keep getting hitching and graphical flickering in some games and can't figure out why. My temps seem stable albeit a little warmer than I'd like 89 Celsius. Could it just be the orientation that it's at? Or maybe it's just the GPU finally giving up, it's connected to a Hisense u8k which supports vrr (which I cannot enable) and high refresh rate. But the HDMI port is broken on the graphics card so I have it connected via a display port to hdmi 2.1 conversion cable (which I'm assuming is why I can't enable vrr) any help is appreciated

PERFORMANCE High end PC stuttering and lagging.

Post image

Hi folks, I assembled this PC a few months back and installed all the drivers, BIOS, etc. But i still face lags and stutters in almost all the games i have played so far. Youtube videos have not been any help , tweaking AMD adrenaline settings and in game settings.

Has anyone faced a similar issue? I mostly play CS2 and AAA games now and have a stable internet running on wifi.

Ryzen 9700x

Saphire pure rx 9070xt

Gigabyte b850 stealth ice

Viper ddr5 6000 cl30

UPDATE 1: I HAVE REINSTALLED THE DRIVERS AND ALSO RAN WINGET, sfc and Dcim commands. The games are slightly better at 2k settings with high to ultra graphics. (CS2 at an avg of 450 fps and ghost recon wildlands at around 55 stable fps) will try more heavy games with ultra settings to check later today.

UPDATE 2: IT SEEMS LIKE MY PROBLEM WAS MY SSD FIRMWARE. I UPDATED IT AND THE OTHER DRIVERS AND I SEE VERY LESS SPIKES OR zero to very low stutters happening across all games. Even rainbow six seige at ultra runs smoothly now. Cs2 is avaeraging 450 fps. Will be testing more softwares and games. But i think it did fix my issues compqring to how it was till this morning. Thanks to everyone who helped here. God bless you all. ❣️

OPEN 5080 won’t turn on

Post image
Upvotes

Just built a PC but the graphics card is giving me an error (red flashing light). I triple checked and all of my cables are properly seated.

My 5080 came with a tripple 8 pin cable but my power supply only has 2 8 pin PSU cables to connect to the GPU. Currently I only have 2 cables plugged into the triple 8 pin and have one cable that’s not being used.

Is that the cause of the error? Do I just need a 3rd PCI cable?

SOFTWARE Ssd showing 100% usage!!?

I tried going through reddit to find the problem, but it didn't solve. I disabled SysMain, deleted the useless antivirus/adguard softwares (IOBit). I even used that 'chsdk' function or something like that, but none seem to work. When i used the chsdk function it got stuck for a long time reading "Stage 2: 99% 0 out of 0 ..........". Please help.

This started the moment i turn on my pc today. The first sign was the booting time, taking unusually long. Restarting didnt't work. Also my pc has two storage devices so that's why 50% in the 1st image.

Any help is appreciated.
Thank You.

OPEN PC not booting / possibly stuck on memory training

Upvotes

Sister bought a PC, worked fine for about a week. Then she started having this issue where it would take a long time to boot, or it wouldn’t boot at all. From what I’ve looked up, it looks like it’s stuck memory training. We used to be able to hold down the restart button on the PC case to bypass it. But now that doesn’t even do anything. I’ve reseated the RAM several times. I had it fixed once, but that last a whole day before starting again after I turned on EXPO in BIOS.

She has a Gigabyte B850M C

And I believe the BIOS version currently on it is F6 which from a search, is from May

Any idea what caused this and how to fix it? I’m hoping if I can just get it to boot and go into bios, that going to default settings will do something.

HARDWARE How can I tell if my graphics card is dead dead?

My computer restarted itself the other day and now I'm getting errors and crashing unless I disable the dedicated card.
Drivers are up to date and it does show up in the device manager, but I get near constant crashing when it's enabled.

It's in a laptop, so unfortunately I can't remove it to properly check.
Are there any other ways to troubleshoot and possibly save my card?

Other relevant information:
Laptop is about 5-6 years old
Moderate amounts of Gaming during that time.
Ran a local AI on and off the last week (worried that might have fried it)

System:
Windows 11 Pro
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080

Errors:
DXDiag - "There is a problem with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super device. For more information, search for 'graphics device driver error code 22' " EDIT: code 43 when enabled.
Crash Screen - "Stop code: VIDEO_MEMORY_MANAGEMENT_INTERNAL (0x10E)"

HARDWARE Help regarding hardware for adding more M.2 SSD(s) to my PC.

Post image
Upvotes

I have a prebuilt with a 9070xt, the motherboard is a B650 UD AX. It has three m.2 slots, one of which is filled with the build's principle bootable SSD the other two are located so that the GPU covers them. There is enough clearance for me to install more, but I'm almost certain there won't be enough clearance for heatsinks. I want heatsinking to prolong the life of my hardware, this is very important to me especially with the costs of storage these days.

I know fairly little about the technical building of computers, so my questions will be elementary.

My questions are:

1) Is it viable to use an adapter for the PCIEX slots (short google search says yes) and if it is viable is there any noticeable degredation in write and read speads for the M.2 SSDs?

2) Assuming the PCIEX slot adapter is an elegant solution to my spatial issue, what is the best adapter I can buy? My parameter is probably just a two slot M.2 adapter so I can buy an initial 4 tb stick and add another later should that prove to be something I need.

3) My primary m.2 slot is gen5, does that mean the board itself is optimized for gen 5, allowing every subsequent SSD to be gen 5 or will I need to get Gen 4 storage?

4) Should I not even bother with internal storage expansion and get an external SSD to act as a cahe for the games I want and just move to and from whatever game I want to the primary SSD installed in my computer?

OPEN Constant 03 boot fail

Hello,
About a month ago, an issue started with my PC. When I'd turn it on, it would show code 03 on the motherboard and stay there like that until I forced it off.

I genuinely have no clue what it does. I ensured all my drivers, firmware, and other software were up to date, etc. Also made sure all the components sit in correctly; nothing is loose, cleaned it multiple times of dust and such.

And I get it still seemingly randomly. Like, even before this post, I got the 03 problem again like 4 times in a row before it booted normally.

Due to this, I've had it land on codes 00 and 97, but those happened once, so I wouldn't really count them.

I have tried default UEFI settings and such, still the same thing.

Sometimes it helped to turn off the PSU and, after a while, turn it back on again, sometimes when I unplug some or all of my USB devices, it just boots normally, but again I can't really pinpoint it to one thing.

The PC Specs:
Taichi X870E
Ryzen 7 9800x3d
30cl 6000mhz 64gb ddr5 ram from Kingston Fury
RTX 4070 ti ASUS TUF

Lmk if any extra info is needed.

OPEN Omen PC Reinstalling Windows No USB Option

Post image
2 Upvotes

Im trying to reinstall windows because some of the boot files got corrupted and during the process, I just can’t seem to find an option.

The bios is already confirmed to be UEFI along the Usb stick uefi supported too. I have usb boot option enabled along secure boot disabled. I also have the option to rearrange to I made sure that USB by drive is the first option. Even with all that, I can’t seem to have the option to use the usb installation.

The reason why im doing this is because I’m in a bitlocker loop where I cant access anything in my PC other than my bios settings; this includes WinRe and Safeboot for whatever reason. Along with that, anytime after I put in my bitlocker combination, I see the manufacturer logo but it instead goes to “Your PC has run into a problem” black screen.

I’m so stressed and really pissed this happened at the worst time possible. I want to fix this by myself before sending this back to the manufacturer because its really expensive.

Is there anyone who can help me with this error? ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE

I've already tried everything, even formatting my PC.

It appears on some pages but not others, and I also tried with DNS
