Funny enough most reviews on steam call out lack of marketing, i haven't known it existed untill now. So basically it's switch to f2p model and good marketing stunt, i like that.

702

u/AdstaOCE May 06 '26

Well the switch wasn't really actively marketed apart from a new trailer and updates to the store pages there wasn't really anything at all. You could say this post is I guess, but I'm just a player who wants more people to play a game I like so.

222

u/Different_Target_228 May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

Who needs to market the switch when there's word of mouth?

Idk why this was downvoted, but it wasn't sarcasm.

This post alone proves it.

Who needs to market the switch when there's word of mouth?

And that's how marketing on reddit works.

The switch is actively being marketed, right now, by you

7

u/AdstaOCE May 07 '26

Sure, by me, a player. But not by them.

22

u/12FriedBanana some stoobid guy May 07 '26

Word of mouth is also a way of marketing. You could argue it's one of the best. And it's working. That is what I mean

47

u/TargetTrick9763 May 07 '26

Agreed. Had no idea this was a thing until this post. They either didn’t spend much on marketing or had a lot of trouble reaching their target audience

Eh. The game never even made it out of early access (EA) and they said it would be in EA until at least the beginning of 2025, and now it will never leave it. It also uses kernel level anti-cheat and requires an Epic account, which is insane for how casual and lightweight they are making the game seem. They said the game is supposed to be "...enjoyed together in short bursts..." So, it doesnt really sound like the gameplay loop had longevity.

Bundle that in with no marketing budget, it sounds like the game simply failed because the devs failed to deliver and make a viable product. Not simply a marketing blunder.

There is absolutely no reason for existing players to switch main games.

I mean servers need power and maintenance. Who paying for that?

622

u/ViruliferousBadger May 06 '26

They are. If there are few players it doesn't cost that much to run the game server VMs.

At this point I'd consider it advertisement. An announcement like this garners them good will and new players and will be positive for their next game release.

... or they will find another way to monetize a free game.

Looking at the game, I'm willing to bet they're using Steamworks. Part of Steam's 30% cut goes to providing access to a number of available backend services for games, including matchmaking, if the game is P2P through Steamworks it has zero overhead.

27

u/AdstaOCE May 07 '26

It uses EOS (epic online services), but probably something similar there. Unless both can be used, I have no idea how that works.

17

u/[deleted] May 07 '26

[deleted]

27

u/Omegaprime02 May 07 '26

I will defend Steam on that 100$ thing, it's a deposit, once you hit 1000$ in sales they give it back, the 100$ is to keep people from flooding the market with crap that's even lower quality slop than already gets on the platform.

2

u/Super7500 May 07 '26

I mean, Steam is still filled with low quality slop anyway like every digital store ever.

5

u/SeroWriter May 07 '26

EOS is actually better than Steam in this regard, their lobby/relay service is completely free

It's more easily accessible and much much worse. Some online co-op games are outright unplayable on Epic games servers. That's not an exaggeration it's impossible to complete the Epic games store version of Barony online because the server will crash after floor 20.

It should be illegal for games to advertise online co-op features that don't function on a particular version of the game.

9

u/Omegaprime02 May 07 '26

Yep, EOS has a free P2P matchmaking service, it's not as robust as Steam's, but it's decent from what I'm seeing in the documentation.

If the backend is designed properly, everything should scale to zero when nobody is using it.

19

u/sh1boleth May 06 '26

Definitely doable with modern cloud systems, at the cost of some latency to start things up but if it’s scaling to 0 customers probably expect things to be a little slower.

All they have to do is not stymie community efforts to make a clone server and the community will do the work for them.

4

u/achilleasa R5 5700X - RTX 4070 May 07 '26

As someone who works close-ish to this kind of stuff, I think the biggest cost is likely going to be paying a person to keep it running.

Stuff like power usage scales down with active users, but you need to do security patches whether you have 10 users or 10 million.

That said, it doesn't have to be a massive cost either.

2

u/Vulpesh May 07 '26

They have currently 3 active players. Their all-time-highest was 77. The cost for that server is pretty negligible.

My friends and I used to play a game where we'd gather around a lamp in his living room, stare at the light bulb for 30 seconds, kill all the lights so we were TOTALLY blind, then throw sofa cushions trying to hit the other people.

Is it kinda like that?

6

u/AdstaOCE May 07 '26

Kind of, traps that emit light can be activated by eliminated players or by live players through shooting them, going to close to them etc and lights can be turned on randomly. In addition, the player has an echo ability which will give oulines for things for a short time.

There's a whole list that Wikipedia uses internally.

That message includes tons of enumerations (rule of three), negative parallelism (that you pointed out), too many outlines of negatives (no …, no …), useless em dashes (notice how you can remplace them all to make the text better)…

35

u/QuestionableWords738 May 07 '26

Uhhh. Fuck. I think I might write like AI. I use the rule of three enumerations and negative parallelisms a lot. I also really like organizing things into lists whenever explaining things. Sad day. Luckily, I've only been accused of being a bot once, but I can see why now. Haven't ever used em dashes although I do like to use regular dashes.

6

u/DDrim May 07 '26

It's less that you write like AI and more that AI writes like you. Where do you think it learned to write in such a way ?

20

u/NatoBoram Pop!_OS, Ryzen 9 5950X, RX 6700 XT May 07 '26

You can disprove yourself by looking at your last post. You really don't have to worry about sounding like a bot!

7

u/QuestionableWords738 May 07 '26

That's true! Although I tend to do it when I'm trying to write more formally.

3

u/NatoBoram Pop!_OS, Ryzen 9 5950X, RX 6700 XT May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

Compare whichever text you want with this post. It's very hard to pack as many signs as densely as LLMs do. You can even try writing in a LLM style by using one sign per sentence and you'll find that it is very much not natural to write like that, much less when stressed.

You could find yourself making lists with bold titles because that's just a normal thing to do for clarity (hence why LLMs do it) but even if you do that and we count it as a sign of AI writing, it doesn't mean anything if it's not paired with other signs.

The way to distinguish between human and LLM text is by the unnatural amount of repetition of those sentence structures, not simply by identifying one and calling it a day. Otherwise, this very paragraph contains a negative parallelism and would make me a LLM ;)

u/Fit-Level-4179 May 07 '26

This was clearly written by chatgpt, it has all the tells. When something goes "not as a this, but as a that" or "it wasn't just this, it was that", its a pattern that ChatGPT tries to use. If they ever change it, then it will briefly become hard to tell, but then other recognisable patterns will show up. Its just how the RLHF (human feedback) training shows up in its style of speech.

They did release it, and the new animations look exactly the same as they did in a devlog sneak peek a month ago: like someone threw together a bunch of first draft animations over a week in time for the sneak peek, called it good enough and went back to smoking weed and playing league.

State of the game is the worst it's ever been now, and they won't even release a hotfix because it goes against Kinetic Game's philosophy of doing "less frequent bigger patches with everything" instead of dropping a small hotfix that could make the game less unplayable.

17

u/DizzyColdSauce May 06 '26

The devs advertised and marketed their "huge" update that they've been working on for years, only for it to look extremely janky and worse than before. They added a bunch of new animations and they genuinely look like something that a teenage kid made in their computer science class. Not only that but the new features also caused a bunch of new bugs to appear which blatantly shows how the devs don't even playtest their own game.

This quality assurance is coming from a game with 20 million copies sold btw. I left the game a year ago in hopes that they would improve and pick up the slack but they are genuinely not even trying anymore.

3

u/GreedyLeek6 May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

It seems like most of the major updates to the game over the years have done nothing but cull the playerbase or cater towards a new demographic.

The VR rework broke VR compatibility (and many new mechanics since aren't VR-friendly). The "challenges" and forced powered-equipment changes during hunts helped decimate the casual playerbase, which was a significant part of the demographic during covid.

Some friends and I used to love hopping on for a few hours in a mix of desktop and VR, meeting many lovely people (if you avoided the lobbies hosted by people with edgy usernames), and casually chatting while doing investigations - that entire era of the game died off.

Thankfully because it uses steam networking for multiplayer, all of us use a super-old build pre-VR/Hunt rework, but unfortunately can't meet any people that way.

3

u/Hdjbbdjfjjsl May 06 '26

The player character and customization they’ve been yapping about for years came out yesterday and it’s about as well done as a free unity asset. It screams placeholder despite this being the update that was delaying and holding back everything else.

3

u/m00nf1r3 i9 13900k - RTX 4090 - 64GB DDR5 May 06 '26

What don't you like about the changes?

27

u/BonksTTV May 06 '26

6 years and hundreds of millions of dollars to expand the studio to 40 employees, and the last update they released is of quality i'd expect from a garry's mod custom server. Animations look incredibly unfinished or otherwise straight up bad. It's now very hard to read anything on any of the items you can hold, which includes the game's menu/journal now. The update introduced an insane amount of bugs ontop of what already affected the game, and it's genuinely bordering on unplayable for much of the community. Just reached a boiling point where so much of the community has lost faith in the current dev team to the point they aren't even excited for future updates because who knows how much worse the game can potentially get.

8

u/m00nf1r3 i9 13900k - RTX 4090 - 64GB DDR5 May 06 '26

That's shitty. I agree that the new animations aren't great. I haven't played it myself but was watching Insym play through it. Hopefully they listen to the community and make it better. I feel like most of their updates have gone over well, this one is a weird choice though.

7

u/Asleep_Weakness7283 May 06 '26

Phas is going to become the Star Citizen of indie horror at this point. The best time for them to crunch and put out updates would have been any time during the initial explosion in popularity. Instead they wait months and months to release super basic UI and character model updates when people have been waiting on the supposed “horror 2.0” update for years. It’s such a fun game to play with friends but I always drop it after a few weeks because nothing’s actually changed since I started playing besides the maps.

There's literally more signs of AI writing than sentences in that short announcement, it's kinda crazy how AI just does that.

The fact that the message is so obviously AI written makes it feel way more insincere.

45

u/Gremlin95x May 06 '26

Not only is that an AI message, but I guarantee this is an attempt to get people to come back to it before adding more monetization.

5

u/EH86055 i7-7820HQ | Quadro P4000 8 GB | 32 GB 2400 MHz May 07 '26

It's definitely AI, but I disagree on the second point. If the message only shows when you're in-game, it's not likely to reach many people who were inactive/wouldn't have played otherwise ... unless someething like this happens, of course. But I don't think the devs were doing 4D chess marketing.

2

u/splendidfd May 07 '26

In the current "Stop Killing Games" climate this sort of move will get somebody to bring them up again every couple of months.

Thing is, it's not that they're keeping servers up for the good of us gamers, it's because there are no servers at all. According to comments in this thread matchmaking is handled by Epic and multiplayer is P2P.

4

u/Gremlin95x May 07 '26

We aren’t in-game and here it is being advertised for free.

I don't think the devs were doing 4D chess marketing.

IMO, as I said, not likely. Someone lacking the creativity to write their own message wouldn't have the creativity to come up with an organic looking astroturf post like this one (or think their message would make people create a genuine post).

Linux is supported afaik. Seem to remember someone trying it back when it first came out in early access, unsure if it's changed since then.

Some EAC games work on Linux. Not saying this is one of them but saying it could.

8

u/fyuckoff1 May 06 '26

That's the gripe I have with EAC. If you can make it work on Linux (without having kernel level access) why the fuck can't you do the same on Windows? I dropped/dodged so many games because of EAC.

Reading the reviews, the game seems solid, its just the devs had no marketing behind it. Hell, I've never heard of it before now. To be honest, they might be able to flip it around, keep it f2p, and find some way to monetize. Being an in-the-dark shooter, I doubt they'd be able to do cosmetics, though. Maybe audio packs that swap common sound effects out. So instead of hearing your gun shoot normally, you hear someone literally saying, "bang" with each shot.

5

u/StrangeCharmVote Ryzen 9950X, 128GB RAM, ASUS 3090, Valve Index. May 07 '26

Reminder that Stop Killing Games exists to ensure this kind of continuance should be mandatory for online games going forward.

I get that this studio hasn't actually stopped hosting the servers yet and might be pivoting to f2p, and that's perfectly fine.

Just remember though that they could axe those servers at any time without notice.

And if they aren't making any money from the product, i'd expect it sooner rather than than later.

As such either patching in peer-to-peer or server builds so users can host it themselves would prove this isn't just a marketing gimmick... but as i said, there's time between now and when they decide to stop hosting, so let them cook.

7

u/bigkruse May 06 '26

"Uses kernel level anti cheat - requires manual removal after game uninstall"

And thats where you lost me.

3

u/Risdit May 07 '26

I mean, A for effort but you're probably not going to sell too many copies of an FPS game where the main gimmick is you can't see shit and you have to rely on your game sense and other senses to hit shit in pitch darkness.

It's like that for a lot of shooters but atleast there's a pretense that you're just really far away and that's supposedly better than getting mowed down by a pad player with aim assist. (?)

FPS genre is just fucked nowadays.

4

u/Gh0stl3it R9 5950X | RX 570 | 32GB DDR4 3200 May 06 '26

I'd call them releasing a version that lets the player set up their own servers or LAN and/or having the game playable without requiring the player to connect to the dev's/publisher's central server a W, but this is a decent start.

5

u/AdstaOCE May 06 '26

Yeah that would be great, guessing for them it's cheaper to keep this up than to spend dev time on it. But it would guarantee that it would still be playable no matter what happens in future.

2

u/splendidfd May 07 '26

The Dev has no server. The game uses Epic for matchmaking and is P2P from there. That's why they just throw it out there for free forever, there's no backend cost for them.

And if the servers DO go down, fanmade ones can step in its place.

"Not as a marketing stunt". It is, indeed, a marketing stunt. But one I can get behind, and I hope for them that it's effective.

2

u/AdamNordic May 07 '26

The sentiment is lovely, but the announcement being written by AI (”No X. No Y. Just Z.” — ”Not as X. Not as Y. But Z.”) makes me instantly be less impressed.

2

u/chainsawx72 May 07 '26

No blowing up. No topping charts. But meant everything to devs.

No marketing stunt. No desperate last push. But because creative work matters.

No tricks. No shutdown countdown. But just the game.

Read your announcements before you release them and make sure that you don't sound like a retarded AI bot.

4

u/Ghost_oh May 07 '26

Literally the first time I’ve ever even heard of this game. But now I’m interested enough to atleast look into it based just on the devs’ commitment and morals.

2

u/urmotherisgay2555 May 07 '26

holy ai writing

3

u/MultiMarcus May 06 '26

I don’t want to be overly negative, but this is clearly written by an AI right? Great on them don’t get me wrong. Just kind of weird that they wrote there heartfelt goodbye message seemingly using AI or at least very much using the trapping of AI.

13

u/marizMCK May 06 '26

not sure why you’re getting downvoted so heavily — very clear to me as well. I don’t think it takes too much away from the sentiment, but important to call a spade a spade.

13

u/SeniorMoonlight21 May 06 '26

Surprised you have been down voted so much. The structure and cadence from AI is extremely easy to pick out if you spend anytime using it. There is literally zero doubt it my mind that this was AI generated text and anyone that say its not just has spent no time actually reading AI written text.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/YankeeTwoKilo May 06 '26

Why the downvotes? It’s almost definitely AI. It’s got that quintessential AI sentence structure all throughout, not to mention the two em dashes.

Why the downvotes? It’s almost definitely AI. It’s got that quintessential AI sentence structure all throughout, not to mention the two em dashes.

1

u/Immediate-Sink-8494 May 06 '26

What makes you think it's AI?

6

u/MultiMarcus May 06 '26

It has a bunch of signs. AI models love the “Not as a blank. Not as another blank. But as third blank.” structure. Which happens twice here and they have two em dashes. Three if you count the title.

Like I’ve read a huge amount of AI generated text recently and this just immediately jumps out as being very AI generated. I could also see it being a non-native English speaking team using AI translation and grammar correction or even just them AI generating something and then feeling like they agree with it. I don’t think AI is categorically a problem, but this sounds very AI to me.

8

u/SeniorMoonlight21 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

It’s mainly the structure and cadence. AI-generated text leans on very deliberate rhetorical patterns especially the rule of three and phrasing like “not X, not Y, but Z.”

Once you notice it, it stands out and its obvious.

For example, in this text, “No tricks. No shutdown countdown. Just the game as is…” is the kind of three part phrasing that is a common AI tell. It’s not proof on its own, but when you see it used multiple times in the same piece, it becomes a strong indicator.

4

u/Edgy_Robin May 06 '26

exactly lmao, these are the type of guys who are gonna get tricked by the most basic ai shit.

4

u/sephirothbahamut Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 PNY | Win10 | Fedora May 06 '26

It baffles me that people consider this a strong argument, when in fact it isn't. It is indicative of Machine Learning AI, but it alone is nowhere near enough to be a proof.

Text based ML AI is trained on what people write. Does it use 3 item lists a lot? Yes it does. You know why it does it? Because it's the most common occurrence amongst the data it's trained on. Human written data.

It should come to no surprise when humans do it, since humans do it frequently enough that Machine Learning algorithms do it after having been trained on human written data.

3

u/Edgy_Robin May 06 '26

The issue is that's it's basically the entire thing. If it's only a small portion, then while eye brow raising it's not 100% proof. But it's basically the entire damn thing.

2

u/Lazy_Silver7364 May 07 '26

Use occam’s razor. Is it more likely that everyone is suddenly adopting an idiosyncratic manner of writing, or that everyone is using AI to write for them?
