Mention obscure nerdy details about how you plan to scrap together something in your lab and have challenged yourself to use stuff that would otherwise be thrown out. Generally you get passed off as some nerd with an eye-roll delivered, “Knock yourself out”

In most locations, if you are just taking without asking, it would be considered theft as the items belong to the center/municipality. That’s how it would be treated at my center. That being said, nothing wrong with asking a worker if you could take something you saw to save it from the landfill or being scrapped.
92
u/HeidenShadows Jul 08 '26
I work in a salvage yard and as long as something is small and pocketable, and somebody wants something, we'll let them take it. Considering we process scrap metal by the gross ton.

Would depend where you are. Recycling centres where I live won't let you take anything once it's in the big bin. I guess they don't want people hurting themselves fishing stuff out of the waste or getting their hands on personal data that might be on old electronics.
Stuff might be faulty too. Taking possibly damaged electronics home and plugging them in might burn your house down.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Esdeath79 Jul 08 '26
Most of the time it would be considered theft, even with asking.
Thing is though they would literally need to tell the police "This dude stole trash" which I find quite hilarious.

They might have just remembered that they paid $50 for it 10 years ago and assumed it would be e-waste now. It's the cheapest corsair vengaence ram possible if I'm not mistaken, exactly what Robert would pick up from Office Depot to get his Dell prebuilt back online so he could browse the interwebs for the latest deals on lawn care products.
And Robert would have been right if not for all the AI stuff happening.

u/cakestapler 13600KF | 3080ti | DDRPoor Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
I know we love hyperbole here about how bad the RAM crisis is, but that RAM was not remotely close to $50 in 2016 lol. I built my PC in 2017 and paid $340 for almost this exact kit (mine is 16-18-18-36) and that was a deal. Now, 1-2 years ago this could have been more like $80-100 though.
Edit: Looked up these exact sticks on Amazon and they bottomed out at $50 right before prices started to climb. If you go back 2-3 years they were between about $65-120. Can’t believe we’re already a year from the bottom, but I don’t need every one of you to share what you bought different brands of RAM for a year ago because I was a year off.
→ More replies (8)11
u/sitefall Jul 08 '26
It was just an example price I pulled out of my memory, bit hyperbolic you're right, but also pretty close to some good deals on ram from the past 10yr. I did a google search for site:reddit and the buildapcsales subreddit which I can't even type the search query for here because apparently this subreddit allows positively NO links and removed my comment so I wasted 2 minutes googling, but I did find some kits like 32gb 3200cl16 for $99 and 64gb 3600cl16 for $160ish, but the best prices were like 6 years ago, not 10.
I think we're both on the same page here and can agree the current price of ram is absolutely stupid (along with the stuff leading up to it).
5
u/cakestapler 13600KF | 3080ti | DDRPoor Jul 08 '26
Yeah, the prices now are stupid. I mostly just saw this pic and then your comment and was like, man I WISH I paid $50 for this 10 years ago lmao. That was before the really good B-die came out, so even what would be considered crappy bin B-die a few years later was $$$
When prices started to take off recently I upgraded my wife’s PC from 16 to 32GB, and sold the 16 for more than I paid for it new in 2023. I was just happy to go from 8x2 to 16x2 for $50 so she doesn’t need to upgrade for a while.
5
u/mnttu Jul 08 '26
It is worth like 80€
That is a lot for some, but for others the hassle of setting up an account and posting pictures and figuring out postage just isn’t worth the time.
I gave away my other 16GB when I switched to SFF last month and my cousin was super hyped for it and was asking why am I throwing away 40€ like that when I just didn’t want to bother with trying to resell for such a small amount
3
u/NonEuclideanPanda Jul 08 '26
32gb for 80€?
4
u/mnttu Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
Yeah? Second hand 2x16 ddr4. I was just looking at those a month or so ago as I was switching to SFF case and I had 4x8 ddr4 in my old system, but my new ITX only has two slots. But I wisely I decided not to buy excess RAM since I mostly just play video games on that PC
EDIT: you made my doubt my memory want went to look. First 16GB DDR4 stick was 25€, but there are also people asking 100€ for a single 8GB. So your mileage may wary
4
u/NonEuclideanPanda Jul 08 '26
Mm probably region based. In the UK people aren’t selling 32gb kits for less than £100. 80€ / £70 will get you 2x 8gb. Its a shame
→ More replies (1)2
u/Zn_G_ Jul 08 '26
Key word “months ago” 🫠
I cannot find 32gb DDR4 cheaper than 100€ anywhere second hand. Meanwhile I paid 50€ for a new 32gb kit like 2 years ago.

That kindof packaging isn't "sealed." They friction fit close, so you can re-use them if you want. I store old and even dead ram from old systems in the same packaging from the new ram replacing it.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Reduce - use less. Do you really NEED to upgrade or do you want to? Could you use the RAM you already have for longer?
Reuse - could you repurpose the RAM? Sell it as used or given it to someone? Maybe you could use it in another machine you have?
Recycle - If the previous two steps are not possible, then it's reasonable to recycle the object so that the materials can be reclaimed and used again.

Very nice. Its a wise idea to run a good 48 hour memtest86 boot image test on that on a spare board / test bench if you have available just to make sure youve got yourself some real gold and not fools gold. Sometimes you are lucky, sometimes it is in recycling because of a bad bank, won't pass POST when plugged in any slots, or manufacturing defect that doesn't appear until you get to using it for a while, or it's a dram slot fryer (be careful!). Fingers crossed!

In my area we have electronics recycling drop offs next to where all the garbage trucks park at night. Usually it's just piles of shattered CRT monitors, VHS players, chromebooks and other expected ewaste. Though I have seen GPUs and memory sitting in there. I think every time I've dropped stuff off there's someone picking through the drop off for gems.

Interesting. When I tried to take some computer parts from my towns e waste recycling center, the employee yelled at me, but then when I started walking it back to where I found it he said to just keep it lol. Nothing as cool as your finds though.

First off great find if they work, Second that isn't sealed that's just a plastic container it came in for shipping to keep the ram from smashing into itself or other stuff. It was inside of the box that was factory sealed shut. Only thing that matters is if it works.. Cheers!

To be fair I've sent sets like this out because the sticks are going bad. You might want to stress test these before dedicating them to a build or thinking about re-selling.
