I don't know... The enemy doesn't seem to care about any hit he takes until the special cinematic move is used. (The rest of the game looks impressive)

Seeing him tank that huge explosion was extremely disappointing.

584

u/theCOMBOguy It Hz. 6d ago edited 6d ago

Even whoever was playing the game was surprised that the explosion didn't even daze the guy seeing how they immediately got hit.

366

u/Frosty-Improvement-8 6d ago

The clip shown was apparently on the hardest difficulty in the game, which as we all know, difficult = pure damage sponge.

376

u/Few-Technician2109 6d ago

Damage sponge doesn't mean being unresponsive to damages ^

79

u/Nannautu 6d ago

Depends how they implemented damage. High defense could mean the enemy is not staggered by low damage. However since it's made from a studio that has never made this sort of game before, I don't have high expectations

31

u/GH057_807 5d ago

You don't have to actually deal damage for attacks to have weight. It's more about how the game feels and reacts to things. These ghostly, wholly ignored slashes that pass through him unnoticed just don't feel right.

5

u/einsteinosaurus_lex 5d ago

Could have a scalable poise system where on easier difficulties it's quicker to stagger opponents than on the harder ones. But some kind of reaction should still be expected on each hit.

It does now-a-days. Check out StellarBlade, you gotta down two meters with different mechanics before the regular monsters display hit stun.

15

u/feedthedogwalkamile 5d ago

In Stellar blade you're facing 30ft monsters. This is a tall human.

Every once in a while there is a difficulty option that does more than just apply a multiplier to health and damage.

I wasn't really expecting Fable to be one of 'em, though. I would like to see some of the normal difficulty gameplay, see if the reactions are any different there.

4

u/Electrical_Echo_29 5d ago

Games with this logic are shit. If a game is hard, give characters armor for a simplistic way to absorb hits. It was like shot gunning raiders in the face in fallout, and they dont even flinch.

Anyone who watched Fable's combat gameplay from the last trailer that also showed off the romance system would have noticed two major issues:

  1. Romance system looks like a spreadsheet or using wealth to buy her feelings
  2. Combat looked extremely basic

And this preview here reinforces how combat looked extremely basic.

Such a fucking good trailer but the game is looking more and more generic. Just like previous Fable games. HOWEVER, there is a DIFFERENT combat video against skeletons and shit that has way more weapon impact. That one looks very different from this one.

3

u/TheMadTemplar 5d ago

That's romance in Fable. It's not a deep system. You win favor or disfavor with npcs through your actions or through gifts.

I can excuse it as a minor poor choice so long as it's limited to a brute-like enemy such as this guy. Maybe their mindset was that they'd be able to shrug off hits more easily. But ultimately it depends on what the combat looks like in other scenarios.

290

u/Wykiki92 6d ago

There's a couple other videos of fighting other enemies, all who react to being hit. It kind of always has been like this in fable games where big enemies shrug off smacks. Now it doesn't look great with the updated fluidity of movement shown off by the rest of the game but it's not out of character.

OP also picked the worst clip I've seen of combat so far and everyone's acting like this was all that was shown.

39

u/OriginalShirley 7800X3D | PNY 4090 | 64GB 6000 6d ago

Yeah it really doesn’t even look bad. If you notice, the enemy does stumble and block slightly when they are hit outside of a them performing an attack. It seems like you just can’t interrupt the attack and the enemy is attacking constantly. Them stumbling with a normal attack is what allowed them to trigger the animation attack, kinda like the enemy has a poise meter or something.

Very Souls-esque, which I guess comes across as weird with the art-style, but not bad.

38

u/Fifteen_inches 6d ago

Souls-esque mechanics need to be on point to not be frustrating and unfair. If it’s too forgiving it’s an uninteresting parry/reposte combat, and if it’s too harsh the player can’t learn.

This does not look on point.

21

u/RoyaleCheezy 6d ago

When I hear souls-esque and see the entire reason poise exists in one clip I tend to get nervous.

4

u/Gizogin 5d ago

Even in Dark Souls, when hitting an enemy with poise or super armor, there’s hit-stop to give you a sense that your attacks are connecting. Monster Hunter does the same thing; the enemy might not be staggered by your attacks (because they’re a giant kaiju), but there’s still plenty of tactile feedback when you land a hit.

I’m not seeing that here.

I mean I never think of amazing combat when I think of fable

7

u/plastic_sludge 5d ago

Eh. They've also ditched the stylized look though.

It's like, here is some bog stardard sword game combat + default UE lighting with realistic metahuman npcs. Just a little dissapointing.

6

u/FillySteveSteak 5d ago

They've removed the exaggerated proportions that everything used to have (from structures to people). Characters no longer look like semi-caricatures.

A peculiar choice to remove such a standout, identifiable characteristic.

3

u/plastic_sludge 5d ago

Yeah, to me it reads like a cost saving measure. I suspect that realistic characters are cheaper to produce since you dont have to create unique models for this specific game. Same with the generic UE look, its easy because everyone knows how to do this. Everyone has the assets for it.

3

u/FillySteveSteak 5d ago

Ya, I just went back to make sure I wasn't crazy. In the OG, all the characters have overly large hands and feet. And big faces too.

It's not a dealbreaker for me personally. The charming/humorous characters and writing are starting to win me over

For real, people jerk off over Elden ring or the Witcher, I could post a clip from either showing bosses just shrug off plenty of regular attacks with zero change or reaction aside from the health bar.

16

u/Plantarbre 5d ago edited 5d ago

Tbh most Elden Ring bosses have some visual reaction to damage. Fromsoft is probably one of the least offending companies for this.

I don't think people expect much, it's just kinda weird to fight enemy_npc_with_civilian_clothes#14 staying completely immobile to an arrow to the head as he exclaims ahhh.mp3 on hit

Agreed, absolutely no weight to the hits. Like
Someone said, it’s likely some “brute” type anyway, but it’s just bad game design and a bit lazy. Why do “tough” enemies have to be damage sponges.

Edit: Doesn’t even look like the dude is wearing armor, just a damn tunic and leggings. Just brushing off sword slashes to the gut like it’s nothing. I seriously am excited for this game but I hope they can improve this bit behavior snd animation before launch.

That juggernaut didn't have to have that much HP. It's like the hero is hitting him with a plastic straw instead of a sword.

392

u/XB_Demon1337 Ryzen 5900X, 64GB DDR4, RTX 5070 6d ago

Well the original video said they are playing on one of the hardest difficulties, so that likely has something to do with it. But also, wager they used the fight as a means to show off various things in long combat to make sure they hit all the mechanics. Like having to heal when getting hit and how it works.

619

u/SunsetCarcass 16GB 1333Mhz DDR3 6d ago

That's a good indication that the difficulty settings are just HP bar extenders, which is the lamest way to do difficulty

105

u/MelonJelly 5d ago

I've heard it called "fake difficulty".

Real difficulty could be things like the enemies are more aggressive, are more likely to use counter play, or telegraph less.

30

u/The_Enigmatica 5d ago edited 5d ago

in the old halo games, the higher difficulties would have grunts throwing your grenades back at you, or if you stuck an enemy they would kamakazi charge you. the first game notoriously holds back the shotgun from the first flood mission on the highest difficulty.

it boggles my mind that game devs didnt make that the golden standard and build from it. even freaking terraria has upgraded AI and new attacks in expert mode...

should take notes from the upcoming Phantom Blade zero, supposedly on the hardest difficulty enemies learn your attack pattern and behaviors to make it harder

The best difficulty in 3rd person action game has Ghost of Tshushima and its Lethal setting.

Basically you and enemies take much higher damage, to the point you can one shot plenty of foes. We also get smacked a lot and in duels, bosses can 1-2 shot you most of the time.

Lethal difficulty let you immerse yourself even more (one shot kills are plenty in samurai movies which this game is based upon) and it cuts on HP sponge enemies.

6

u/blueblip 5d ago

Along with this, the NG+ Purity perk in Jedi Survivor that turns everything into a one/two shot kill for both you and your enemies is hella stressful but fun. So your lightsaber now actually FEELS like a lightsaber.

Boss fights become an absolute joke obviously, but since most boss fights have a meditation point before them, you can swap out the perk if you care enough to bother.

But for the remaining 99% of the game, even the most basic Stormtrooper becomes a threat. And groups of Stormtroopers become deadly.

Harder difficulties should be things like improved ai tactics. They block more, attack harder and your attack window is smaller, rather than just slashing. Not this death by 1000 heavy attacks.

u/Nannautu 5d ago

My gripe with most games, especially a very popular series. Damage-sponges are just annoying and feel like a waste of time.

Totally agree. This is what finally killed my love for final fantasy games. FF13 was an epic fantasy and then it feels like they thought it did not take enough time and added two extra 0s to every enemies hp total. More hp should be a guide that I am really under leveled or under equipped, not as a method to make the game longer or "harder". There has been almost zero bosses or enemies that large health bars both make sense and add to the game play.

In 'Horizon: Zero Dawn' and the sequel, enemies used pack tactics at higher difficulties...

3

u/Provoloneapse 5d ago

Ghost of Tsushima’s Lethal difficulty was perfect for this. You die in a one or two hits, but so does everyone else. Everyone is faster. Guard breaks, stances and use of your full kit are necessary. Button mashing and wailing gets you killed.

The exception is boss duels, but like any good boss fight they’re supposed to test your understanding of the combat system you’re working with.

Ghost of Tshushima and its Lethal difficulty would be really handy in more game. I love the idea of us and enemies (humanoids) taking much more damage from attacks.

I'm also tired of unarmoured enemies tanking sword hits like its their wife beating them with day old newspaper...

4

u/Twiggy1108 5d ago

That or do it’s like KH2 did and add a critical mode than increases enemy damage done and taken and player team age done and taken(not as drastic as lethal mode). Faster and more skill ups to build your character faster.

This is generic as fuck. Where are all the cool spells, or the weighty swings the first game had? This is just dodge-bonk-dodge-bonk.

I was hyped for the game, but if this is how they use their showtime to highlight the combat, my interest has dropped several notches.

Let's not forget that the original had a puzzle where you're supposed to spell out HITS, but spawned a bunch of werewolves if you did SHIT instead.

There are some indie games that are attempting to capture a similar feel and mechanics - notably Fata Deum and Genesis of a Small God - but not a single one of them has arguably the most important element - the creatures. I can't understand why no one has built a game with creatures that learn from what you do by direct observation and reinforcement, and then apply those behaviors and abilities autonomously in game. To my knowledge the Black & White games are still the only franchise to do it with anything like their depth.

If someone can prove me wrong, please do! I'd love to play a game with such an engaging AI creature again.

Slow motion zoom in for the knee with a "saunter" of a settle back into default animations like that knee was remotely impressive to watch just for it to go back to "doesn't react to being hit"

The normal enemies react to the hits

This is seemingly a boss and deliberately... doesn't. Yes it looks weird in practice.

75

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 6d ago

Ah I see. Is this just a selected clip without context then?

93

u/Almainyny Almainyny 6d ago

Even with context, if this guy is supposed to be a boss who doesn’t react, he’s not impressive enough for him to not react. Give him some proper armor, make him look intimidating. Then he can get away with no-selling your attacks.

As it is it just makes the game look lame.

Definitely. Slashes disappearing into cloth ain’t it.

actually, yeah, something as simple as just putting him in armor would instantly make it "oh fuck, this dudes a unit" believable rather than slashing some dude in a t-shirt with a sword while he just "nuh uh"'s you

But even if that's the case, the developers should have done a better job to aid the player in suspending their disbelief. Even something as simple as some magical glint on impact to imply that he's countering her magic would go a long way.

The main thing that stuck out to me was no hit reaction. It looks so floaty without it. I have no idea how that got past anyone.

Edit: as stated below it seems like normal enemies do.

It looks like there's almost no hit stop, which is really needed in games these days.

The rest of the demo was more compelling, fighting multiple enemies and using spells/bows/accessories. This mini boss isn't very indicative of the overall experience but it does highlight some pain points.

But of course this clip is gonna be used to justify hate for the game by people who will never play it.

It is so comically bad wtf like they forgot to add effects or anything at all to the hits

3

I would like to point out that literally EVERYthing else looked good except this ONE single enemy

It was actually like a 4 on 1 fight or something like that.  Everyone else was normal movements

Just this one dude was doing the whole "don't even feel it".

Some of the worst damage feedback I've seen in a modern game. It's weightless, slippery and the interaction sucks

I hate when human sized enemies just completely disregard any and all hits except for the one that reduces their HP to zero. Giant monsters or someone with a reason to be shrugging off damage like super heavy armor, berserk state or it just being limited to a few uninterruptible moves is fine, but some random dude in peasant clothes with a weird axe should definitely not be face tanking explosions or treating sword strikes like they came from a foam pool noodle.

Say what you will about Bethesda enemies or Fromsoftware enemies.

At least they react to hits. I can stagger anything from bandits to Dragons in Skyrim, I can cripple people’s limbs in Fallout, I can break enemies stances in Fromsoft games.

The fuck is this? Dude doesn’t react. This looks boring as shit. Literally “dodge poke dodge poke dodge poke” until the game decides it’s ready for a critical hit. I hope it gets improved

NGL, looks like every other generic combat in games for the last forever years.

44

u/Evebnumberone 5d ago

It's truly baffling how big Devs can make dogshit like this when FromSoft has been giving them the blueprint for nearly 20 years.

Weight, impact, sound, game feel. This game looks like something AI whipped up with a prompt asking for shitty weightless 3rd person combat.

13

u/evolutiiiionz 5d ago

Sekiro and Wukong ruined combat for me, them games were beautifully designed for combat this looks absolute ass

3

u/Evebnumberone 5d ago

It's a bit like ID's philosophy about FPS games. The shooting has to be fun, above absolutely everything else.

These Devs can't seem to figure out that players aren't going to put 150 hours into an open world game no matter how beautiful and content rich it is if the gameplay is lame.

As lacklustre, disappointing and bad as the brute boss-fight was, why did you cut out the footage against the normal opponents that preceeded this fight?

Talk about cherry-picking.

The full fight clearly showed the enemies instantly reacting to being hit, such as falling over head-first when shot in the foot (and finished off with an execution), dying from a headshot, or otherwise hobbled by magic or hits. Not to mention the micro animations for repositioning the body when dodging looked very good.

u/Cool-Traffic-8357 6d ago

18

u/MagicJourneyCYOA 5d ago

So... what? Because the enemies that the player fought before reacted okay, we should ignore that horrendous boss fight we have in front of our eyes? The topic is not the other small mobs that came before, it's that boss right here and its horrible animations and non reactions.

3

u/Sillyforfun 5d ago

No the topic was "new fable games combat" and this video is trying to only show the bad of a single mini boss over the good of all the previous combat.

Obviously we should hope they can fix this, but this video is trying to paint this as all that the combat is.

Hm, not sure about that one.

Gaming discourse is just cherry-picking gameplay snippets to shit on them without context. So many clips of combat for this game with enemies reacting to hits but this is the one that goes viral.

I'll be the dissenting opinion and point it out. This is a boss enemy with a poise bar. I don't like the non-reactivity any more than any of you, but its hardly surprising. Even Dark Souls and the Witcher 3 have boss enemies that are mechanically identical to this guy. He isnt flinching from every hit because he is a boss enemy. I am not surprised by this in the slightest.

Yes, it could be done better.

3

u/jason_rogue 5d ago

You’re 100% right, I think people would be reacting less if we saw any enemy feedback whatsoever, especially after a giant explosion

3

u/AlaskanMedicineMan 5d ago

For sure, and I hope they introduce some visual model flinching a la elden ring even if it mechanically doesnt do anything, it would certainly feel better than this.

This combat looks extremely mid. Attacks have no weight, no satisfying audio feedback for hits, they have a lot of work to do if this is what they’re planning on putting out.

7

u/Revolutionary-Top-70 5d ago

Enemies NEED to respond to being hit. Especially if they're unarmored. Having a brute that never stuns/doesn't react to hits isn't satisfying combat imo.

The animations look clean, though

4

u/Savber 6d ago

This legit reminds me of a quote from Gabe Newell:

The point I would make is, if I go up to a wall and shoot it [and nothing happens], to me it feels like the wall is ignoring me. I'm getting a narcissistic injury when the world is ignoring me. So it is like, to me, I was trying to convey to the user a sense of, “Yes, you were making choices; yes, you were progressing.” Which meant the game had to acknowledge that back to you. If you shoot at a wall, there have to be decals. If you kill a bunch of Marines; the Marines have to run away from you, right? You have to have this sense of the game acknowledging and responding to the choices and actions and progressions that you've made. Otherwise it loses any sort of impact.

That's the issue I am seeing here. Can the game still be good? Sure but it's weird that these enemies have zero reaction to your hits.

u/VeryNoisyLizard 5800X3D | 9070XT | 32GB 6d ago

... I miss fable 1- 3

Maybe i was too harsh on 3 when i was a kid...

And yes before anyone tries to ask, i watched the whole video. Its barely any better.

So, this is just a showcase, right? Even then, there certainly needs to be more feedback when attacking the enemy. Sure, it’s a big dude. But it looks like the hero is slashing through air.

13

u/Lazy_Finance6672 5d ago

Might be a bit nitpicking, but why does the game need to follow the formula of parrying, dodging and timing attacks? Why can't we just make combat more fluid? Like, not everything needs to be GOW or Souls like?

11

u/Deremirekor 5d ago

Probably because parrying, dodging and timing attacks is literally how to fight.

Idk what you’re expecting dude, that’s like saying why can’t we go to the moon without using math cause math is boring

This was the boss enemy in the area. Other regular enemies were very reactive to hits. So either this boss is still under development, or bigger enemies just don’t get staggered

What? Because you can dodge and attack and have stamina? Dark Souls didn't invent any of this.
