Meme/Macro I recreated the meme (and it worked!)

GPU temp decreased by 5~7° (used to be 74°) and the CPU temp decreased by 15° (used to be 75°)

I let half of the air conditioning like this to cool the room.

Since they have AC then for sure, but those without, might get the room a bit cooked after hours of play 😅

This feels like a good way to deliver condensation directly to your PC.

306

u/xForcedevilx 18h ago

The way these split systems work is draw the moisture from the room, they'll have a pipe that flows outside.

Thats why you get that weird 'dryness'

Well, ideally yes. I am in a rental where these things are so poorly maintained that every now and then the drainage gets blocked and these start spitting water. Sooo.. there could be an edge case that water can go in the PC.

19

u/Expensive_Host_9181 ryzen 5 5500 - gtx 1080 - 32gb 3200MHz 18h ago

I have a window ac, and can say mine also spits water, so i would never attempt this.

33

u/MikeHunt93 18h ago

That's because it's likely also poorly maintained lol. They're not supposed to spit water from the evaporator

-1

u/DreamWeaver2189 R9 7900x / 5070 ti / 32 GB 17h ago

Yes they are, that's why you install a condensate pump. At least the one on the picture.

Window units are 2 in 1 as they have both evaporator and condenser in the same unit. That one has a condensate tray that also drains outside.

11

u/MikeHunt93 16h ago

Correct. The condensate collects in the drain pan and is either pumped or drained elsewhere. Like I said, water should not be spitting from your evaporator coil.

1

u/DreamWeaver2189 R9 7900x / 5070 ti / 32 GB 1h ago edited 1h ago

Yeah, sorry, the wording was a bit confusing for me.

As in, it's supposed to condensate, that's normal, it's not supposed to leak outside the unit because of the tray and pump they have.

But still, I wouldn't risk having basically a hose from the AC to the PC. Pumps can fail at anytime, and if it does, then OP is going to regret it big time.

Just realized OPs unit doesn't use a pump, I guess it's not that terrible, still he should put the bag on the other side of the unit. If it leaks, it will leak from the side of the draining hose, which is the same side the bag is on.

1

u/MikeHunt93 1h ago

Oh yeah totally agree, would not risk it. I'd rather just try to keep the ambient temp of the room lower

1

u/Emikzen 9800X3D | 9070XT | 64GB 13h ago

it can still happen outside your control, I certainly wouldnt risk my pc with it, lol.

1

u/Expensive_Host_9181 ryzen 5 5500 - gtx 1080 - 32gb 3200MHz 13h ago

It can, and does to me, if i leave my ac on for more than 20 hour periods it starts to freeze up internally to where there's a block of ice on the radiator. If i let this ice melt while still running the ac (it has a mode that's just a fan) it's slowly melts the ice, while spitting the water droplets out the front.

1

u/EqualOutrageous1884 6h ago

That means your refrigerant pressure is very low, if you have someone that works with HVACs they can help you top it up, if not, fixing it won't come cheap.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/MikeHunt93 9h ago

Agreed. Definitely don't risk your PC to it. My comment was just to point out that under normal operation your AC shouldn't be spraying water out off of the coil

3

u/Milky_1q i5 10600K | RX6600 8GB | 32GB DDR4 15h ago

I left my window ac on when I went to summer camp for 3 weeks.

Upon my return I was welcomed with a sheet of ice on the unit

2

u/Sevulturus 14h ago

That is the result of a poorly maintained unit that has poor airflow, or has lost refrigerant.

1

u/bilal_hcg 8h ago

Indoor AC unit starts spitting water if there is a clog or the insulation on the pipes is done that leads water in front of the roller blade or if the drainage pipe is even lose.Yes, in such case it can go directly in the pc.

1

u/DeadLyASgamer 6h ago

It happened to me at my own house, rain and wind brought along a *single z polythene that lodged in the drainage and over the next couple of days the AC up started vomiting

9

u/Aviyan 17h ago

The metal case will build up condensation on the inside. And if OP turns off the PC the electrical components may also have some condensation. Not worth the risk with the GPU and RAM prices.

2

u/ReallyBigDeal 9950X3D RTX 3080 16h ago

Just don’t run the AC into the computer when the computer is off.

2

u/tv_ennui 18h ago

These things drip, condensation occurs on the casing as well.

2

u/Opening_Net8098 17h ago

Isn't condensation when hot and cold meet and then moisture from the air sticks to the wall of one of the things?

1

u/TheTimeIsChow 7800x3D | 4080s | 64gb 6000mhz 8h ago

There's still moisture in the computer from surrounding ambient air. Rapidly cooling that down causes condensation.

It's less about the moisture from the air coming from the AC, and more about the cold temps rapidly cooling down the rest of the air that is entering the system.

In theory, best practice would be to exhaust the PC air out of the room and then let the AC cool and dehumidify the room itself.

1

u/ChaosTheory_jrh 18h ago

Good to know!

0

u/Ws6fiend PC Master Race 15h ago

Except that's all dependent on the thermostat being done correctly.

A lot of split systems will have a thermostat that runs the fan at all times even when the compressor is off. This leads to the exact opposite problem because the fan is now blowing moist air into the room making the relative humidity high.

In my 14 experience with split units, I've never had a problem with dryness. I've always had problems with humidity.

2

u/xForcedevilx 14h ago

Split system air is inherently dry. Heating in winter, cool in summer. It creates condensate that goes out the tube.

I often use a woodfire place instead.

1

u/Ws6fiend PC Master Race 9h ago

That's only true if the system isn't oversized for the area and doesn't short cycle. When a system short cycles all the time the moisture in the air isn't removed.

0

u/Consistent_Research6 12h ago

Took the thought right out of my head.

0

u/Leggy_Brat 7h ago

Until it leaks

22

u/Thesoop85 18h ago edited 17h ago

How do you figure?

Air out of an A/C is dry and cold. When cold dry air is pumped in to a warmer environment, the relative humidity drops even further as warmer air has higher vapor capacity. So, lower relative humidity.

What mechanism here do you see leading to condensation?

4

u/Ws6fiend PC Master Race 15h ago

Compressor off, fan on.

These types of units can rapidly cool a space, but are generally oversized for the heat load of the room. This leads to them reaching the desired temperature too soon without extracting the moisture from the air.

Most split units like the one shown aren't properly maintained or serviced which leads to buildup on the coil or drain line being blocked leading to condensation that never leaves the space.

9

u/bdash1990 5600x | 3080 12gb 18h ago

What happens to the all the cold components when the AC turns off?

11

u/TedTheGreek_Atheos Ryzen 7 5800x | RTX 4070 Ti | 32GB Vengeance Pro 17h ago

It collects in a bottom drain pan and drips out the back of the exterior.

7

u/foiz5 17h ago

I hate, hate, hate when I forget to empty my PC's drip pan.

2

u/Ws6fiend PC Master Race 14h ago

Except most people don't properly maintain them leading to mold growth on the coil and drain blockage which makes the moisture never drain out. In addition most of the thermostats for these units keep the fan going as long as the unit is on.

11

u/Kaymish_ Desktop 16h ago

Nope. The opposite actually. Air conditioners were originally designed to dry out air in factories that were making products sensitive to moisture. The cooling is just a byproduct.

10

u/zDymex 17h ago

It will actually do the opposite. Split units have a seperate condensate hose. It works more as a dehumidifier than anything.

5

u/pOUP_ 7h ago

That's not how AC works. AC both cools and dries air in doing so

2

u/ChaosTheory_jrh 5h ago

Living in a humid environment will change your mind.

My AC condensates around the port where the air blows out.

IDK what kind of PC you have, but mine don't stay warm if the PC is shut down or sleeping. Maybe you never turn yours off.

4

u/Thesoop85 17h ago

If the PC is off and you still ran the system like this then yes, that could be problematic.

If it's only ever ran like this with the PC on it's very unlikely you would have issues.

1

u/thatfordboy429 Not the size of the GPU that matters... 16h ago

What do you think happens to the air around the PC after its shutdown?

Now combine that simple reasoning, with the fact that the dew point will shift again lower.

u/Various-Salt-7738 18h ago

What about a PC case full of cold moist air surrounded by a room temperature... Room?

I get what you mean but I'm not risking my hardware like that

28 with air conditioning. I just hate seeing temps higher than 70 😅 my brother in law has 3080 Asus TUF. It raises to 66 out of the box. My 3080 ventus 3X on the other hand raise up to 78 when there's no air conditioning (Which is still normal) but I wanna make it lower like having a better cooling card.

3

u/Mineplayerminer Desktop 11h ago

It's normal for the 80-tier cards to get super hot on idle. Our 3080 Ti cards usually peak at 60°C on idle despite being fully repasted. Sure, my 5080 doesn't even reach 45°C on idle during some 2D gaming, but it's also about the cooler.

no one say it won't work.

I mean you can even put the computer in the fridge and it will work.

The problem is aftermath. condensation and all.

15

u/Naive-Database-2888 18h ago

> I mean you can even put the computer in the fridge and it will work.

Except that won't work. It heats up the fridge much faster than the fridge can pull heat out. Throwing your pc in an enclosed box is going to be a bad time. Regardless of how cold the closed box was to begin with

4

u/TadaMomo i9 13900K | RTX 4090 18h ago

there are quite a lot youtuber did that, i mean it will work with some adjustment as well, not just put it in and it works, i mean you still need to get that power and some cable out as well.

like i said its the aftermath that always the concern.

1

u/stayndarsh 18h ago

I'm wondering if high enough fan speeds might counteract any potential condensation, perhaps evaporating it as soon as it forms.

Awaiting a follwup post on how something shorted thanks to condensation.

Just because the unit is blowing dryer air doesn't mean the colder-than-ambient parts won't condense lingering ambient humidity. And split systems are way lest efficient than window or central hvac at pulling humidity out of the air

You're probably better ducting the hot exhaust to the AC intake. It should improve efficiency of the AC, and drop the temp in the room for the humans.

Or do nothing, mid 70s is fine.

Most of the takes on this share their IQ with your GPU temp.

1

u/Ahmed_Shengheer R7 9700X | 32GB RAM | RTX 3080 15h ago

I hate temps that are higher than 70°. I know its normal. I just want it to be cooler.

1

u/thatfordboy429 Not the size of the GPU that matters... 15h ago

To many on this sub do not know how fun it is tinkering, or just challenging themselves. On my main builds, the temps don't exceed 50c on the GPUs (5090 and 3080, water cooled). So I get liking thing to be cooler, after all its cool. Heck, my one setup is capable of sub-ambient cooling, and yes, people argued with me (and also didn't understand how condensation works).

1

u/Ahmed_Shengheer R7 9700X | 32GB RAM | RTX 3080 15h ago

Me too. I don't get how condensation works.I asked the AI and told it to explain it to me so many times and I still refuse that conversation will happen when the PC is still hot. It should only happen when the PC is idle or off but the AI tried to explain it and I didn't get it.

In the end, I removed the setup cuz I can't afford a new one now 😅 plus, I found a stable undervolt configuration that doesn't crash on The Finals, COD Beta, Battlefield 6. It made the GPU stay in 65° under load.

1

u/thatfordboy429 Not the size of the GPU that matters... 3h ago

Condensation is tied to your "dew point". So, using a quick dew point calculator, and my current ambient conditions. 68f(20c) and 49% RH. Means that my dew point, aka the condition at which condensation can occur, is 48.1f(9c).

Basically, with an A/C unit its impossible. Because no matter how much air you direct to the PC, your still cooling the air around it too. So, you are constantly dropping the temp of the air around the PC, when off, dropping the dew point.

1

u/mmikita 17h ago

You've now dropped your CPU from a perfectly acceptable temp to another perfectly acceptable temp while depriving your room of cold air. What modern hardware setup even overheats nowadays?
