I can’t wait till this stupid development boondoggle goes away. I’m so fucking tired of art becoming homogeneous instagram filter slop. Games are 50gb and insist their “high fidelity” needs client side AI polishing

4

u/SpellingPhailure 2h ago

The size of the game has nothing to do with the computation needed on the client side to real time simulate all the lighting effects DLSS5 is attempting to emulate.

Yes if only there was a toggle so people that like it can use it and the people that hate it can turn it off.

DLSS5 has an on/off toggle? Ok why are people complaining?

-26

u/Vladx35 4h ago

What’s dumb is pretending to be forced to use it.

13

u/NLDutchie RTX 3070 Ti | i5-12600K | Gigabyte Z690 4h ago

We're not forced to use it, for now.

3

u/TheLastTreeOctopus 3h ago

I don't really understand the problem though. If it is forced in the future, by then it'll be a lot better because of all the games that will release between now and then that it can be trained on. I get the "preserve the artist's vision" to an extent, but if we never see the artist's vision, we won't even know what we're missing. Plus, let's be real, there's all kinds of tinkerers and hackers out there, and there's clearly a lot of incentive for it, so I think it's safe to say that at some point game-specific patches (or ideally a universal tool) to disable it will be released.

I really think everyone's blowing this way out of proportion.

1

u/OkEmu8597 1h ago

The only issues I have with what you said is games that have this on automatically when it's much better will have mediocre assets underneath and be using it as a crutch. No point in making things perfect if dlss5 is changing the mesh all the time. (If that happens it will also be on consoles so no mods there)

Side note: another issues with this is the performance hit, it'll causing more cards with less Vram to struggle even tho they may be much more powerful than other cards with more Vram. Which is an issue we already have, now made worse by DLSS5s 13gb minimum requirement (the majority of cards it's on already don't even meet that, 20 series entirely and only 1 card of the 30 series)

I have no real beef with it past this tho, if it's optional I'm happy but if it becomes a crutch like dlss has been for some major IPs then I don't like it (looking at you monster hunter wilds Devs saying it'll be need for 1080p 60fp)

Sorry I'm yapping so much, don't want anything I say to be misconstrued because I know what Reddit is like.

2

u/TheLastTreeOctopus 1h ago

Frankly, I still don't even get why everyone's so paranoid that this is going to happen. I don't see it becoming a forced feature as long as consoles are still a thing, because then if games start using it as a crutch as everyone says and and the rendering pipelines are built around DLSS5, the consoles just won't be able to run them (at least not without completely reworking the rendering pipeline, in which case it makes more sense to just keep DLSS5 optional in the first place rather than building two separate pipelines for different platforms.)

1

u/OkEmu8597 26m ago

Paranoia wise I think it's more just people seeing patterns with optional feature being not so optional and AI being forced into everything. It's why I'm slightly worried myself but I do mean slightly.

As for consoles it's likely to go that way if this keep being developed because Sony is working on FG and has PSSR, Xbox and the switch is using FSR + FG already. All it'll take is AMD joining in and its a sure deal on both ends, might not be quick but it'll definitely happens if that's the case.

I also highly doubt consoles will die, it's easy to see that when a generation is getting old like now, but the main selling point of Xbox and PS has always been they're much cheaper than a comparable pc at launch, have an ecosystem people have already spent thousands on and guarantee long-term compatibility until the next gen.

“If we never see the artist’s vision, we won’t even know what we’re missing” Jesus Christ

I cannot understand why you are being downvoted. I guess people don't like when you challenge their echo-chamber.

14

u/areyouhungryforapple 7800x3d | 4070 | 32gb | 3h ago

Reddit absolutely loses their mind whenever AI is mentioned no matter the context

4

u/Vladx35 4h ago

Because they’re happy circle jerking each other over their hate of “ai slop”. I guess it adds meaning to their otherwise bland lives.

-6

u/horticulturistSquash 🦗 Tech Support 3h ago

calm down you dont need to get mad just because you get downvoted. Its simply a bigger problem than we see at first glance, and you might have missed it

Right now youre right, we arent forced to use it. The problem comes later, if the backlash isnt strong enough :

  • studios will eventually start designing shit games because "ai will make it look better anyway"
  • the art direction of all games will look the same even if you can tweak it no one will (see how all UE4 UE5 and Unity games look very similar just because of the lighting)
  • more feeding the AI bubble means higher prices for everyone
  • games will soon be sloppily optimized and new games will require it (see how basically every new game requires DLSS/FSR now)
  • more Nvidia exclusive features to further deepen their monopoly and force even higher prices

and many others i might have missed too. Im just saying it will definitely change the whole industry in the next few years in many ways, and we need to think a lot about it all

-15

u/International-Oil377 PC Master Race 4h ago

that and being obsessed about what others use. Who tf cares. It's all that's on this sub for the past few days

2

u/Confident-Ship-5062 4h ago

The fear is games will look like shit and ai slop if dlss 5 becomes industry standard in newer games. Is it that hard to not understand? What about people who don't have rtx cards or lower end rtx cards that take a massive performance hit with this filter on?

This is clearly for the 60 series cards and to get people to overspend on nvidia cards.

3

u/International-Oil377 PC Master Race 3h ago

then boycott those games.

11

u/vozinha7 4h ago

What about people who don't have rtx cards or lower end rtx cards that take a massive performance hit with this filter on?

This filter is not mandatory. Ray tracing was introduced 8 years ago and we only have a handful of games with mandatory ray tracing. This is what makes all these dlss 5 posts so stupid.

0

u/Confident-Ship-5062 3h ago

You missed the point and ray tracing on certain games is mandatory to experience the game as intended. Look at pragmata and resident evil requiem for example.

5

u/vozinha7 3h ago

Look at pragmata and resident evil requiem for example.

Both of these games look great without rtx. I think you don't get the point is that Rtx is gonna have superior lighting afterall, you can't expect the devs to have baked in lighting so great that it matches ray tracing just because it doesn't fit your agenda lmao.

1

u/Confident-Ship-5062 3h ago

Pragmata does not look as close to good compared to raytracing and some may argue path tracing is the destined look for the game. Go look up comparisons on youtube, the entire level design of the game has light boucning and reflections everywhere that are not present with raytraing/path tracing off. I'm not talking about puddles on the floor either

-2

u/AmosThatBook 3h ago

Ray tracing isnt a very apt comparison because it is a purely cosmetic feature. Many modern games do however require DLSS/FSR at this point (at least insofar as they run like dogshit without it), even on higher end systems, because those tools have been baked into the development pipeline instead of optimizing.

3

u/vozinha7 3h ago

Many modern games do however require DLSS/FSR at this point, even on higher end systems, because those tools have been baked into the development pipeline instead of optimizing.

So it seems you don't even know that the AI filter is gonna be completely optional feature that you can toggle on or off just like ray tracing, frame gen, or literally any other dlss feature. No wonder this sub is crying all the time, it's a hub of misinformation at this point.

-1

u/AmosThatBook 3h ago

I am aware of that lmao but, if we want to use ray tracing as the example, we are now seeing games with the ray tracing baked in (Indiana Jones as a recent example). I agree that as it stands, there isn't much to worry about regarding DLSS 5 (and I it's certainly overblown in communities like this) but this is also Nvidia's first stab at the tech. We dont know what future iterations will look like or how devs will use it and recent trends in AAA gaming dont really point to a promising future.

1

u/Guilty_Rooster_6708 3h ago

ID Engine 7 was built from the grown up to run ray tracing only and it runs it very efficiently. Their are various interviews and documentary on Doom TDA where they said the new engine allowed them to save time + focus on developing world physics.

Hating on advancement like that is backwards. Realistically when Doom TDA came out last year it the GTX cards that couldn't run it were a decade old already.

3

u/AmosThatBook 3h ago

Not saying it was/is a bad thing, just that we do now have examples where it is no longer a toggle option. I'm not even saying Nvidia's AI filter will ever hit that point, I just think it's a bit weird to say those concerns are unfounded. Overblown, sure, but not unreasonable (especially once it gets to the point where it isn't absolutely tanking FPS)

1

u/Guilty_Rooster_6708 3h ago

Yeah that’s fair. The worst scenario is that we will get way more “slop” games that looks the same when more devs use UE and rely on stuff like DLSS5 as a shortcut for designs.

There are still definitely pros for features like these for developing games though. Doom TDA is probably the first AAA games I’ve played in years where physics work properly in the game, kinda like the 2000s games back then, and the game runs pretty well even on consoles too. Rip ID Engine

7

u/pajamaz03 3h ago

Yeah that's a dumb take. And it's only, at best, worry-mongering. Look man, if that comes to pass, I'll grab the pitchfork with you. But that's not the case yet. I'm not on guard for nvidia at all, I don't like how they've rolled out a lot of their "features" either.
It would only become an industry standard if it carries that much value. But we have seen time and time again that it isn't pure fidelity of the games we play that make them good or bad.
Valheim 1.0 releases in 7 days. It is sincerely one of the best games I've played in my 40+ years on this planet. You think I give a fuuuuck about DLSS 5 as an optional feature in that game?
It probably won't even see implementation in that game. I'd have to find a way to mod it in.
To the original commenter's point, this is not nvidia suddenly forcing a new visual on everybody at the expense of the artist's original intent. This is an optional feature.

1

u/EscapeTheBlank i5 13500 | RTX 4070S | 32GB DDR5 | 2TB SSD | Corsair SF750 3h ago

You also have to consider that some games will be probably made specifically for DLSS5, like shown in the NBA 2k27. That video made the game look very good, and you can search for in on YT. But I also admit that their initial showcases of DLSS5 were just a glorified AI slop filter, which is not something I would want in all my games.

-5

u/Quinzal Ryzen 7 7800X | RX 6800 | 32GB DDR5 3h ago

"You can't criticize it because you don't have to use it" is a world heritage dumb take

10

u/Vladx35 3h ago

You can certainly criticize it. But those dumb memes are totally wrong about the tech and its potential. DLSS5 does not add what isn’t there. It plays with light, shadows and details.

-9

u/Oxygen4Lyfe 4h ago

its just like with raytracing. You either have to use it or everything looks bad because the devs didnt implement very good non-rtx lighting like they would have before rtx.

17

u/vozinha7 3h ago

you're just larping anything to fit your agenda. Games still have good lighting with rtx turned off, hell most games barely have any difference worth the performance hit of rtx, same thing is gonna happen with dlss 5. But this sub is just too overreacting on anything which contains the word "AI".

4

u/Poundt0wnn 3h ago

Considering most games are still developed with consoles as a base and they barely use ray tracing, you're full of shit and lying.

0

u/Oxygen4Lyfe 3h ago

nah its true

2

u/383throwawayV2 24m ago edited 20m ago

Why does everyone shitting on DLSS 5 only ever compare character faces and not the environments/everything else?

DLSS in general is still a pretty infantile tech in the grand scheme of things and I imagine that on whatever iteration of DLSS we’re on in 5-10 years max, the faces will be drastically improved to the point where you won’t even be able to tell the difference. I do see why people dislike the look of the current version but it seems like everyone online is ignoring the fact that it’s a continuously developing technology that is only going to get better and allow for graphics in games that wouldn’t be traditionally possible.

0

u/BarderBetterFaster 1h ago

Dumb means you can't speak, btw

Why wouldn’t you just use a real screenshot if it was so bad? lol

2

u/PlopPlopPlunk Asus TUF 5090 OC - 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 2h ago

Because the real screenshots from live game play look like this https://imgur.com/a/VeYjR04 and that doesn't fit the narrative that "DLSS 5 and AI = Bad"

10

u/RiftHunter4 2h ago

I watched a few games and it varies a lot. Especially since it can be adjusted. If anything, I've learned that indeed a lot of modders have no taste and just throw any slop onto their games.

3

u/PlopPlopPlunk Asus TUF 5090 OC - 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 2h ago

I definitely agree it can look bad, not going to pretend that doesn't exist. People are often just full applying it and don't understand how to use the leaked version or the game simply doesn't look good because it wasn't made with DLSS 5 in mind.... some games though, if you apply it correctly (cyberpunk being one), you can see the potential and it's a pretty ridiculous step forward.

I also played Assetto Corsa with it and yeah, I'm just driving a real car in a real world lol

3

u/ComradeLeafeon 2h ago

Very nice. Now let’s see that in motion.
