This hobby is completely fucked for the next 5 years

u/AtlasPrevail R7 9800x3D + 5080 2h ago

Their goal is likely to eliminate the hobby altogether and force everyone to cloud gaming. You own nothing and will like it. Basically. We need AI to crash already.

64

u/Granhier 2h ago

I'm just not sold it's gonna work out for them very well. Unless the goal is to have ALL of personal computing "outsourced" to the cloud, people will have need for PCs for all kinds of workloads, not to mention a no doubt significant portion of people who will just refuse to use Cloud just like they did with Stadia.

If you can't scale due to sheer unwillingness, then all you are doing is to kill a hobby, and I don't think Sony and Microsoft are on board with that, even if they are pushing all digital.

If the strategy were to outsource compute to the cloud, you'd think they'd at least collude with ISPs to actually provide decent internet to people, because that is a COMPLETELY untenable plan with current infrastructure

For real lol I’ve used GeForce now on my steam deck and it’s okay… When the internet speeds are good. But living in an apartment, unless most folks are away or asleep, the internet often isn’t fast enough to not lag.

And then of course the issue that not all games are available for streaming. I wanted to play Elden Ring, but that isn’t an available title. So I stream it from my desktop instead.

Yep.

See anything in the professional world, such as CAD at all, professional video editing especially at 4K res and beyond, 3D modeling and rendering with or without a farm, etc. Those all require powerful systems from the get go and rising costs hurts businesses of all levels long-term, from the one-man teams to the large enterprises with thousands of rigs around the world.

The #1 risk would be everyone taking on debt to work, which is actually exactly what a lot of companies have been doing for this 'AI' boom and making said businesses realize that they need to stop overspending because if a full on crash were to happen rather than a gradual ramp down (the much better option) it could quite literally blow up the world economy to the point of bank collapses, with them and a significant chunk of the Fortune 100 companies requiring bailout or else risk losing tens of millions of jobs overnight.

The situation is really rough as all fuck.

Majority of people are getting by on just their phones and basic shit laptops if they really need a home PC. I think part of the goal is you now need to subscribe to everything. Make storage scare and impossible locally. But compute time instead of owning a powerful device. They want it all outsourced.

1

u/Granhier 42m ago

But how the fuck do you "universally" outsource computing power? Do you have a Cloud PC profile that you load up with your own subscriptions? How do professionals or even self employed people buy a computing subscription that includes all their work tools with their own subs?

It sounds like a logistical nightmare to navigate.

2

u/6786_007 5700x3D | 32Gb | 9070XT 38m ago

Easy, dry up the supply on serious hardware and limit consumer to useless bs laptops and desktop clients. Make the OS a literally portal to an instance in the cloud. If Microsoft stops pushing out OS updates what are most gonna do? Linux? Sure but on what hardware? Outdated shit from 10 years ago?

Do you really think all those data centers are just for AI? No. They are building out the capacity to force you to pay for compute.

You will own nothing.

Car prices out of control. House prices out of control. Taxes being raised on people have paid off houses. Technology prices pushing out consumer and going full enterprise. It's coming.

1

u/Granhier 35m ago

That's not what I'm asking though. People will need very specific subscriptions for their very specific workloads, for which their PCs are set up in a very specific way.

This isn't like Netflix subs where it's 10 buckaroos a month and everyone and their mother has one. How do they integrate all these hundred to thousand dollar subscription licenses into cloud compute? They are tied to specific people after all, and the needs of these utilities are not quite the same as having an all encompassing game library ready to fly at any time.

u/6786_007 5700x3D | 32Gb | 9070XT 31m ago

O gothca, it would be very similar to how AWS EC2 instances are setup. They provide solutions to each type of workload that you may need. So it would be very easy for them to create a "gamer" instance for people who want to game. "Workstation" for people who want those types of work loads, etc.

Data can be saved on cloud drives that you can access as needed. Mounted to each instance based on your usage.

They might even go with a variable design. The OS takes up resources as needed and bills you accordingly. Using lots of ram? Using lots of CPU? Need more GPU? It will just run up the bill. Anything is possible.

Edit: AWS currently has 155 different types of EC2 instances: https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/

u/Granhier 21m ago

Thanks I hate this

1

u/6786_007 5700x3D | 32Gb | 9070XT 15m ago

Yup. It's been difficult to tell people what's coming because they really don't get that the infrastructure is there. It's just a matter of these companies agreeing to fucking us over even more. And believe me they will when money is one the line.

14

u/ElectronicStretch277 2h ago

I'm not sure who "they" are in this case, but no one would benefit from this. Certainly not GPU manufacturers.

-7

u/TheNotoriousFAP Ryzen 7 5800X3D | RX 7600 | 32gb DDR4 2h ago

They (Nvidia and AMD) can sell you an upgrade every 5-10 years or they can trap you in a monthly subscription for life while no longer needing to manufacture anything. That's who benefits.

2

u/314kabinet 1h ago

If it were subscription based it would be a race to the bottom from all the various providers who bought their compute in bulk for their datacenters. They make more money just selling you all the hardware they make.

3

u/AutoCockerPB 1h ago

Too bad they just killed the fiber movement. Cloud gaming sucks really bad when you’re not on fiber network

2

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 1h ago

This has been tried several times and the physical fact that lag will always be present just doesn’t make it viable for many types of games.

1

u/Fancy-Dig1863 55m ago

This is gonna sound far fetched as fuck but I’d be willing to bet the majority of gamers would rather just stop playing these games than move to an all cloud platform.

1

u/6786_007 5700x3D | 32Gb | 9070XT 49m ago

I've been saying this for a while. Look at Xbox, they want to be a platform. AMD gave up on flagship gpus. Intel only got into GPUs because they knew AI was going to explode and they wanted a piece of the pie. Nvidia already released GeForce NOW many years ago and it wasn't bad. They will have complete control over the games and access. Memory companies and ssd manufacturers dipping out of consumer markets. And it's gonna get worse.

1

u/MaximumDepression17 22m ago

Ill literally pick a new hobby before I pay for cloud gaming.

The average consumer is stupid as fuck and ruining the world.

1

u/Global-Page-7091 9800X3D | 5070ti | B850 | Hyte Y70 Touch 1h ago

New hardware is overrated. I bought my PC at the end of last year and thought I would be cranking graphics and running AAA titles at full tilt. I wound up playing OSRS, indie games, and my steam backlog of games from 2008-2016. Most new AAA games are kinda ass.

You can play 90% of the games ever made on a modern phone. A used $500 system will do it even better.

Hardware repair and the used market are about to grow exponentially while these greedy tech companies bleed themselves dry and beg for government cheese.

-4

u/MammothUnique4147 2h ago

Yeah! AI isn't real! It's a scam! SCAM SCAM!

13

u/TheWindowWasher7 2h ago

I can’t see the prices ever coming back down. Even if ai is a bubble that bursts, they have seen that people will pay this, which sadly means it’s probably the new baseline.

10

u/suprememontana i7 12700k/4080S 2h ago

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted when the 3080 to 4080 went from $700 to $1200 MSRP. Nvidia has shown before they really don’t give a shit what people have to say about them in the gaming space. I think prices will go down again eventually but the next generation of cards will have another ridiculous jump in MSRP

4

u/FoxyGoddessX 2h ago

They will have to face the reality of lowering prices so people can buy them or accept the major profit loss. The concept of infinite profits only has another decade or two left

4

u/mstpguy 2h ago edited 2h ago

People will find ways to build, though the latest and greatest stuff is out of reach.

I have a modern, midrange PC, but want to try something new. Or rather, old.

I am about to assemble a PC of old parts and spare parts that I found in my closet (or on ebay). i7-5775C/DDR3, with two GPUs (3070 and 1080). Maybe I will delid the CPU and give it a slight overclock. Gonna try Lossless Scaling and see how it performs. It won't win any awards, but it'll be interesting to build and tweak. It'll scratch the itch.

4

u/killer5907 2h ago edited 2h ago

I wouldn't say screwed, just less available to other classes of people. PC parts as a whole will be available to console manufacturers, the people who are earning 80k or more, AI professionals/ businesses and lastly Schools.

The main worry is the lower class people and the people slightly above them but not considered middle class.

1

u/RiftHunter4 1h ago

I doubt the current conditions will last beyond 2027 at this rate. I don't see the Ai build out lasting that long.

RTX5080 is still enthusiast class, it performs better than literally every other consumer video card ever except for 2 (4090 and 5090). The 90 just went from halo prosumer to entry level data center.

I mean, you could still get a cheap 50 series card for 300$ that will blow away your old card. You don’t HAVE to spend for the best and newest.

1

Show me a $300 50-series card that actually 'blows away' a high-end previous-gen card without crippling compromises on VRAM. The entry-level price brackets have been completely hollowed out. After the 10series GPUs have gone to shit. We accepted it too. Graphic demands went up, artificial intelligence went up, actual hardware design and implementation cratered.

You need to baby that thing with your life. These companies aren't even replacing them anymore under warranty, they're just giving you what you paid for it back which would be a down payment toward a new one lol.

Nah dude, that shit is overrated.

I had my 4090 for close to 3 years with no issues, same with my 5090 for 1.5years, no issues. I'll be fine.

Also furthermore, warranty works differently here in Norway. Stores are literally forced to follow very strict laws. So yet again, I'm fine.

I’d still say the 5090 is worth $5k now.

Do I get $10k worth of entertainment out of my gaming PC over the course of 3-4 years? Fuck yes I do!

Ok put your money where your mouth is and buy a $5,000 5090 rn. And if you already have one, buy another since it’s so worth it.

I bought one in April. I don’t think you understand how much I spend on computers and peripherals. I generally spend $5-6k/year on pc equipment. It’s my primary hobby.

Which is nothing for a primary hobby. Most people at my income level are buying small airplanes to fly or track Miatas or whatever to go racing. This shit is actually very cheap. Is it way more expensive than it used to be? Absolutely. Still a good bang for the buck, in my opinion.
