Training Plans/Advice Looking for strength training for 49 year old guy

Sat at lunch with my mother, stepfather, wife, kids. At some point the kids went to explore the restaurant and my mother leans over and says oh, looks like someone has a bit of a belly. To which my wife pointed out that after 40, cardio isn't enough. Welp -- it's true. I got a bit of a gut going on and I do need to do some strength work. Like a lot perhaps. But also I do need to keep up the run training cos, you know, I run races on occasion. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions -- all would be welcome. Thanks!

Gear Moving a Peloton Tread

Due to a change around at home, I need to move the Peloton tread from one room to another - thankfully on the same floor.

It will need to be dismantled as it won’t fit through the doors. I’m useless at assembly and don’t want to damage the tread so need to call in professionals!

Spoke with Peloton who confirmed that they no longer offer a relocation service and recommended Gym Kit Solutions. Have reached out and awaiting a response.

Anyone have any recommendations? I’m based in Kent

TIA

Purchase Advice Should I trade my tread in for the bike?

Some back story: I purchased the bike back in 2018 and I was on it every single day. I never lost any weight while I was on it, but damn I loved it. Because of the lack of weight loss, I sold it and bought the tread. This was back in 2021 and we barely have used it. I’m now on a medication to help me with weight loss since I have hypothyroidism and some other meds I’m on make it hard to lose weight. Should I trade my tread in for the bike again? Would it make much of a difference in weight loss if I ran instead of cycle? Or would the bike just be better because I might actually enjoy it?

Community This is why we Peloton

1.2k Upvotes

I’m 40+. Been training on my Peloton bike for almost 7 years. I’m never going to be the fastest, fittest or strongest. Never gonna run a marathon or cycle 100miles.

Took the family to Disney World and walked 172.5k steps, over 72 miles in a week pushing my girls in the double stroller in 100 degree heat. Feet are sore but I felt good all things considered.

This is why I do it. Training for life.

Cycling Saddle Pain?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows why the peloton saddle, with a cushion cover, is causing me to have bad knee hip and back pain, and other indoor spin bikes from gyms like CycleBar are giving me no pain. I have hypermobility and was so excited to purchase a Peloton and I’m trying not to freak out. I’m wondering if my saddle is too wide?

Subscription Free classes with Peloton App One?

I've been using various iterations of Peloton (never with their equipment) for about 10 years now, with use peaking and pausing. For a long time, I was a user on my sister's All-Access account. She then decided to cancel her membership, and I was downgraded on the app to *something*. This something had maybe 12 free rides, and some free strength and cardio.

I did this for a few months, and decided I wanted to have more ride options and signed up for the Peloton App One with the three rides/month limit. I thought that those free classes I had access to would remain freely accessibly for months I wanted more than three rides.

I'm at 2/3 rides this month and now I'm realizing that this may not be the case. I can't find anywhere that there are free rides offered anymore. I'm a bit annoyed - I think I would have preferred the unlimited rides for free, rather than 3 new rides (or even repeating the same rides!).

Has anyone else been in this situation? Is there a way to access some free rides to top up months that I'm extra active?

Y’all as someone who is 15 months PP I can honestly say that I am LOVING Selena’s new core classes. The focus on deep core and bringing in moves to help close Diastasis recti is unmatched.

I’ve been super diligent with getting back into Peloton a few months ago and ensuring that I do proper form and moves is top priority.

This class in particular has been a weekly go-to

Power Zone Weekly Discussion Power Zone Discussion [Weekly]

Welcome to the Weekly Power Zone Discussion!

Due to demand and community feedback we are trialing a Power Zone Weekly Welcome Discussion - a space to chat about anything related to power zone training. Think of it like the "Daily Discussion" thread, where anything goes...big or small. Here, we've carved out a special place for people wanting to discuss ideas and topics related specifically to PZ training - how to program PZ classes, talk about PZ classes or PZ programs, chat about PZ instructors, advice for FTP testing, etc.

People are not limited to using this thread to discuss PZ but are highly encouraged to use this weekly discussion. You can still post in the daily, training thread, or create a new post. Think of it as another place to chat about PZ stuff without getting lost in the daily. Or a place you can check into weekly if you're a casual redditor looking for some other PZ folks without wading through the daily.

The Power Zone Weekly will be posted on Monday moving forward.

Note: The mods will check back in with the community to see how this idea is working, if there is a better day it should be posted on, etc. If it isn't working we can always scrap the idea or change it up a bit. Thanks for giving it a chance!

Peloton App Leaving Apple Watch and going to Fitbit Air. What will I miss?

Hey all! I can’t seem to find this info anywhere but one thing I love about my Apple Watch is the live HR I get on the screen of my Peloton tread. Anyone have a Fitbit air? Will I get that? I’m on an iPhone as well.

Thanks!

Group Ride Moulin Rouge closing on Broadway Sunday 8/30: let's revisit the content!

Who's up for revisiting some of the old Moulin Rouge content? After over 7 years, the final show on Broadway is on Sunday 8/30. For anyone who loves the show, this feels like a good way to send them off (and perhaps nudge the powers that be at Peloton to create more Broadway content)!

These are all from 9/21/22:

30min Moulin Rouge Two for One Ride (Bradley & Sam)
10min Moulin Rouge Cool Down Ride (Leanne)
30min Moulin Rouge Yoga Flow (Kristin)
30min Moulin Rouge Run (Matty)

These are all fun classes, but I've done the yoga so many times I've lost count. If you love this music, the 30 minutes absolutely fly by! Highly recommend.

Happy trails to all at Moulin Rouge! I know some are Peloton members. :-) Can't wait to see what you do next!

RedditStrength Reddit Strength - Week 4

Welcome to week four of eight of the Reddit Strength program. I hope you've all been enjoying it so far. If you're brand new to this or missed any previous weeks, this is something you can jump into any given week you don't need to have been there week one for it to work. This strength schedule is designed to help you progress from one weight to the next (if that is what you want, you are of course free to maintain the weights you use as well). There is a #RedditStrength for those interested in joining it.

This is an eight week cycle that repeats. Each time we come around again I'll be looking for a couple newer classes to replace some of the older classes previously used.

Each class will list "light" or "heavy" (or "benchmark", see below), this is not to be confused with the Light/Medium/Heavy weights instructors ask you to use for each move. What it means is, lets say you normally use 5/10/20 but you are hoping to level up to 10/15/25. When my class says "light" you would use your 10s when the instructor calls for medium weights and when my class says "heavy" you would use your 15s for the same move. This will help us to progress to where the 15s are your new normal.

Monday:

Wednesday:

Friday

Extra Credit:

Benchmark: Every 4 weeks each body area has a Benchmark class. These are from the Benchmark Strength collections. By repeating these classes you are able to monitor and record your progression from cycle to cycle. You are encouraged to adjust the weights and reps to meet your personal goals.

Extra Credit: These are extra classes for those who want more work than the standard schedule. They are also good substitutions if for any reason you don't like a class or instructor on the schedule.

You can stop reading here unless you want to know why I am scheduling what I am scheduling.

The basis is a 4 week progression. In each body area we will use light weights for 2 weeks then heavy weights for two weeks per the definition of light and heavy above.

It follows this pattern, aiming for 45-60 minutes a day 3 days a week:

  • Round 1 - 2 days light
  • Round 2 - 3 days light
  • Round 3 - 2 days heavy
  • Round 4 - 3 days heavy

Each body area has the schedule staggered, so you're not trying to go all heavy in every area in the same week. While you are going heavy with LB you will go light with UB and vice versa.

FAQ

  1. Can I start any week or do I have to begin with week 1?
    1. You can begin any week. This is a repeating cycle with no real beginning or end, a mobius strip of a program.
  2. There are too many classes for me, how should I trim it down for my schedule?
    1. I recommend trimming evenly (but keep all the core if you can). So take off 1 day of UB and 1 day of G&L each week if that suits you better.
  3. Do I have to do these on the prescribed days? I would rather take a couple classes a day for 6 days.
    1. Absolutely mix and match the classes across the week however fits best into your schedule. They are only listed this way because this is my personal schedule. As long as you are doing them all in the week you should get similar results.

Feedback

I would love to hear what everyone things. Specifically; Are there any classes you would like me to rotate out (why)? Is this the right amount of strength work for you? Do you have a favorite class you are hoping I work into the mix?

Subscription Returning to Peloton — better to sign up new or re-start existing membership?

We have both a Peloton Bike and Tread that have been gathering dust for awhile, and now in 2026 I'm trying to—ugh—get healthy, I guess. 🤣

Our membership was previously held by my partner and has been dormant for awhile. I noticed at https://www.onepeloton.com/app-membership they offer a 30-day trial for the App subscriptions, but my understanding is we don't want that, we want the All-Access Membership instead (which includes App).

Q: Are there any similar trials / deals with All-Access, and if so, is it better to come in as a new member or re-engage a stale membership?

---

PS: Btw, if any actual Peloton people read this sub, it needs to be WAY EASIER to figure out how to sign up for All-Access. I had to resort to asking AI. :P Neither https://www.onepeloton.com/en-CA/membership nor https://www.onepeloton.com/en-CA/membership?toggleSelect=equipment explain that you need to trigger this from within the equipment itself. (Which I assume works; haven't tried it yet, obviously.)

Training Plans/Advice FTP Stuggles

All, I’m struggling to get my FTP up. I do a regular mix of endurance, PZ, climb, and intervals; plus upper and lower body weights. My current setting is about 10 watts than I’m getting on my tests and I typically go harder than the suggested outputs in classes. For endurance I’m pegged against top of 3 and dip into 4.

Do I need to be doing like 3-4 weeks straight of Robin yellows or PZ Max??

Suggestions welcome. Thanks 🙏

Running New to running and have a pace question...

I've done a couple running classes and realized I may not hate it as much as I have before so will incorporate some into my weekly workouts. Am using a non Peloton tread and app on my phone in my building's gym.

Just did a live DJ one with Adrian and when we were at a moderate pace, he'd say to increase .1, .2, etc. but the moderate range never increased. So if it's moderate at 3.5-4.0 and I was at 4.0 and increasing, now I'm over the range. Are the ranges set for everyone or does it somehow calculate a range for me based on ____??? They felt slower than I'd think for moderate or challenging run.

Running Pace targets not updating to reflect new benchmark run

Hi Peloton,

I need help. I got the tread+ 4 months ago and got into running. 1 mile benchmark run was 10:48 min/mi, recommended pace target was 3.

I took the benchmark run again tonight and my time is down to 9:37 but the recommended pace target in a running class after the benchmark run was still the same, 3, and it still said “Based on your best mile of 10:48 min/mile”.

I turned treadmill off and on again. The workout is showing in my history. But still my best mile in pace target classes is showing up 10:48.

What do I need to do to get my best mile updated and know my new recommended pace target?

Thanks!

Training Plans/Advice Favorite pump up the volume?

I just finished 4 weeks of RKs express 5 day and want to try something new. I’d prefer 20 minutes a day right now, any PUTV you loved? Or didn’t love? Also considering Robins split 1 or 3 from the Split replays. I know I can just try any of them but getting decision overload :)

Tysm!

Gear Bike+ USB port disabled?

I charge my HRM through the usb port on the bike+.

Got on this morning and noticed the HRM battery is dead and it’s not charging through the usb port. Hooked up the charger to a wall outlet and it’s fine.

Did anyone else lose the power out of the USB on the bike+?

EDIT. Unplugging and plugging it back in worked. Duh me.
