When we got him and first took him to the vet, they said it was likely he was born without an eye. The socket is empty but he still blinks with it and it opens wider when he sees something interesting.

He has no clue it's missing but cannot catch things in midair, bumps into chair/table legs, and cries if we're walking on the side he cannot see us on a walk.

Hi all! I am just reaching out to see if anyone has recommendations for toys for a blind dog! My 5 year old Shiba got both eyes removed about 2 months ago and I feel she is a bit depressed and just very lazy and sleeping a lot. Would love some toy recs for her!

Also, does anyone have experience with adding another dog to the family to be a companion for your blind pup? Considering this but not sure if my Shiba would find it more of an inconvenience or increase in her quality of life!

When the cops confiscated my dog she was only 1 kg 600, she was neglected. Now she is 2 kg 450 and gets 2 meals per day and sniff puzzles!

Just wanted to update everybody on my Luna's double eye surgery!!! She's doing way better--the vet ended up needing to take our 2 stitches in her eye cause it looks like they were causing excess irritation. So thankful for the help and advice I got from you guys!!

This is Rudy, we are about 2 weeks post op due to a melting ulcer that just would not heal.. im so happy I found here and don't feel so alone in all this! It tore me up deciding to remove his eye.

My question / advice request is is there anything I can do to help him? I might be looking into it too much but I think he is still struggling with his depth perception mostly when things are up close, I've made a habit of approaching him from the right hand side so he can see me, I'd love to know what everyone did to help their one eyed babies 😊

Has anyone had a pet that didn’t recover well?

Our Heeler mix is 9 years old. She had a lensectomy in her right eye four years ago, and we’ve been managing a variety of issues with her eyes with a variety of drops since then. Most recently, she’s on four different meds that we give 3X/day (some right eye only, some left eye only, and some in both eyes).

We knew we’d get here eventually, and now the drops are no longer working. The canine opthamologist just treated an ulcer that has since healed, but our pup is now on Gabapentin for pain and we have two weeks to make a decision for her: bilateral enucleation or euthanasia.

She has some sense of light and darkness, and possible limited vision in her right eye. It’s likely cloudy pinhole vision at best, though we’ve been in our home with the same furniture arrangement for four years and she still runs into doorways, corners, and gets stuck places (like under the dining table).

Our regular vet, who’s seen her since we adopted her at 4 months old does not believe she would adjust well to losing her vision entirely. We’ve managed severe anxiety her entire life (she’s currently on Prozac), her restlessness and barking has increased with her vision loss, and there’s an injury she had when we adopted her to consider. Her leg was broken and we’ve since done four surgeries on it. It’s causing her pain again and she’s experiencing lameness. Most days she doesn’t want to leave our master bedroom and she often won’t venture into the yard to potty. She does occasionally play with our other dog (9.5 year-old Lab), but it usually ends with our Heeler mix smashing her face into something.

Our canine opthamologist believes she’s a good candidate for a bilateral enucleation and believes that’s the treatment we should pursue.

We’re concerned that plunging her into complete darkness could make her more fearful and that we’d end up euthanizing anyway. In that case, we’d put her through a painful surgery and two months of recovery for nothing.

We also live in an area with heavy winter snow, so going outside would require navigating constantly changing terrain for 3-4+ months out of the year.

However, if all goes well, and other health issues could be managed, we have the potential of 3-6 more good years. Everything I’ve read indicates very positive outcomes after recovery because the source of pain is gone.

I’d love any thoughts or opinions. I want to make sure we’d be choosing this for her and not for us. We plan to talk to our regular vet again on Monday, as we saw the canine ophthalmologist Friday evening.

My heart, my soul, my very life essence. After getting some joint supplements recently he is crazier than ever. I love him so much.

Sifis was born lacking a paw, and walked on the stump until it got all bloody and wouldn't heal. With the leg amputated, he does much better. He's three years old tomorrow.

My dog bill had to undergo an enucleation yesterday due to a tumour. It’s been over 30 hrs since the procedure but we are struggling HARD with the cone (e collar). He isn’t really drinking water and is unable to access his food and water bowls. I was given permission to remove the cone to allow him to eat, which I did - and which he did, but he’s still not drinking water. I’ve been rubbing it on his lips to the best of my ability and hoping as he heals he will naturally seek out water. Anyone else have this issue?

Also - I am wondering what folks here have done for bowl access.

Also - they said 2-3 weeks with the cone but I’m just not sure that’s possible. What have others done? Removed cone sooner? Please advise.
