Seeking ideas and feedback for r/platformer

8 Upvotes

Hey everyone, r/platformer has been fairly active thanks to developers using this space to share their upcoming games (which I love to see!). But I've also been thinking about ways to encourage discussions about existing platformers we enjoy.

What would you all like to see?

Some ideas I've tossed around:

  • Weekly/Monthly "what are you playing/recommendation" threads
  • Monthly threads on different types of platformers - metroidvanias, precision platformers, momentum-based, etc.
  • "Hidden gem of the week" - talk about games that don't get enough love

But I'd like to hear from you - what would make you engage more with the sub? Any events, threads, or changes you'd be into? Drop your ideas below, nothing's off the table.

This is my custom physics engine with ball rolling, magnetism, gravity fields, laser with convex/concave lenses, portals, fluid simulation, destructible terrain and more. The whole game was built from it's own level editor.

Just opened the Steam page. Demo coming next month.

Hi, I am Kangkan , a solo game developer from India working on Ko-Kho-Go.
It is set in an imaginary world inspired by the textures of rural Indian life, folklore, strange local legends, everyday absurdities and the kind of stories that blur the line between the familiar and the mythical. At the same time, it carries traces of the realities people actually live with.

I'm making a Metroidvania Maker where you can build and share your own interconnected worlds

I've been working on Metroidvania Maker, a game/editor for building your own interconnected Metroidvania worlds.

You can create rooms, add enemies, hazards and abilities, build puzzles with interactive elements, and jump straight from editing into playing what you've made.

There's also local co-op for up to 4 players (with Steam Remote Play Together support) and world sharing.

I just submitted the first Steam demo for review, so hopefully it'll be playable soon!

La Spaghetti - BerryLeafGames - Fast-Paced 2D Pixel-Art Platformer

2 Upvotes

Play as a sentient, walking strand of spaghetti in a chaotic 2D pixel-art platformer! Your main goal in each stage is to locate and collect the tomato to open the portal to the next level. Bounce on slimes, dodge deadly meatballs, and master precise movement to stay alive 🍝

Steam:

Trailer:

If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, I would really appreciate a wishlist on Steam! ❤️

I’m a solo developer and currently working hard on getting a free playable demo ready in the coming months (or Weeks).

If you have any feedback, questions, or ideas, feel free to drop a comment here or post in the Steam discussion hub:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/5103310/discussions/

The game is in active development for PC, and I can't wait to share a playable build with you all soon!

Try Steam Demo with friends

On round start - choose item from randomized box. Someone might take item before you clicked on it. 60 seconds to choose, and find place where you wanna put the obstacle. Rotation and resizing gizmo provides more freedom for advanced traps or simplified paths.
Reach Finish first to earn more stars. Wins who has most Stars after 5 rounds. Collect secret stars on level, or players can choose Star item to place.

How an American programmer and I are developing a roguelike platformer in the style of MS DOS's command mode.

So, good morning, good afternoon, good evening, and good night. I, a russian pixel artist, and my friend, an american programmer, are making a roguelike platformer in the style of early pixel art. ***This is my first post of this kind, so forgive me if it's a bit long-winded.***

It all started when I (as usual) was looking for someone to go to a game jam with. And eventually, I stumbled upon a guy named inkajoo. Previously, we wanted to make EYEGUY (a surreal top-down adventure similar to Beemis: The Curse of God).

But, just after starting the project, we burned out on it and decided to take a break from gaming. And what better way to break from deeveloping a game? Creating a new warm-up game. While searching for inspiration on this guy's [itch.io](http://itch.io) page, I found [KVN 0.X](https://inkajoo.itch.io/kvn), a platformer in a monochrome pixel art style reminiscent of MS-DOS. We discussed this prototype and decided to start working on a full-fledged roguelike platformer in a similar visual style!

![video](jcmo2ln2ftkh1)

A week of hard development has passed, and as a result of this week, we already have:

* a completed player movement
* 3 enemies
* a mechanic for picking up heals and upgrades
* movement between rooms
* a mini-map
* bombs
* hatches to subsequent floors and keys
* small details, trinkets

And that's not the end of it (most likely). We still need to implement full movement between floors, room generation within floors, and much more. We want to continue developing the game, but for now we need to finish the core mechanics and upload version 0.1 to itch.io.

And yes, we're aware that platformers are a difficult genre to market, but we already have gameplay ideas to spice up the usual platforming.

![video](dq0xznzyetkh1)

I hope someone will enjoy this project, because we're currently trying to gather at least a small group of people so that they can provide feedback on the visuals, gameplay, audio, and other aspects of our game! So there you have it. To conclude this post, I'll link to the [game's development YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0v48EEpWpHhiuueFl72rnA) so that anyone truly interested in this game can follow its development. That's all.

***Good luck!***
