I fucking hate this about our democracy.

Ideally you’d vote for the party and the party could put in who they want or recall them.

But that works a lot better when there’s 5+ parties. The two party system is fucked

I think an old CGP Grey video mentioned a system of elections where 50% of representatives are directly voted for and 50% are chosen by the party, so people would vote for both a rep and a party, and then proportionally to the number of votes each party got, they'd get to appoint reps. That way an individual who is charismatic or runs on very specific issues can still represent an area, but if the party thinks there needs to be some level of institutional knowledge that the individual is lacking, they can fill in that gap with their own appointee. It seemed like a pretty decent system iirc.

I may by a cynic but that just feels like illusion of choice to me. “Yeah we’ll give you your shiny fun toy that kept your attention and excites you but it won’t play like you hoped it would. It plays by our rules because we don’t actually like your toy, we just need your purchase”

Ideally you would like to vote for someone you believe in, but if you do there is a high chance it will be a spoiler vote and you will actively empower the opposite side of the political spectrum.

US is not a democracy, it barely ever was, and it never will be as long as Americans keep pretending it is.

I prefer the 2 party system. BUT, you must vote in the primary. where your vote counts MUCH more. I even heard a phrase: vote for who you want in the primary, vote against who you dont want in the general.

people dont understand the power of the primary system and the politicians dont want you to understand that power. When I complain to a politician, I always start with : I will be voting in every primary....that gets a politician's attention like nothing else.
