Ain't that the truth. When he first started campaigning I wasn't familiar with him outside the TV show I never watched. I read a few bullet points of his election plans and thought maybe he deserves a shot. I decided to tune into one his rallies and within 5 minutes I knew this guy had mush for brains and should be nowhere near any office. No idea how he managed to build up a cult-like following. Back then he was still somewhat coherent and has only gotten worse but he still has supporters. Completely baffles me.

Trump is a unique figure in America. He's been in the public zeitgeist since the 1980's. A minor celebrity that worked tirelessly to garner himself media coverage. He worked his way into American homes through movies, magazines and even became a character on the WWE. Then he had his stint as a reality TV businessman in The Apprentice.
He built up a following because Americans knew him by his mythologic image then he won them over by "telling it like it is1" and "saying the things that I'm thinking2".
- Repeating the lies that conservatives kept hearing from conservative media in complete disregard of reality.
- Open bigotry. After 8 years of Obama, white America was terrified that they were losing their hegemonic grip upon America.
I had a cousin tell me, straight faced, that Trump was the most truthful president in his lifetime. He was completely serious.

The paranoid part can be seen in how he treats the other party - that they're unamerican and that they're trying to destroy him. It's seemingly something that people don't understand. Trump is a fuckwit of the highest order and a terrible, terrible person but people seem to want to blame what's happening solely on him.
The problems are far greater. The GOP is no longer Republican, it's fully right wing and everyone in it that's culpable is complicit. See Trump can say anything he wants and do anything he wants. It doesn't have to happen. The reason it is happening is because there's people in the party that want and allow it to happen. Trump by himself is just a fat orange pedophile rapist. But when weaponised, he is capable of fucking everything up.
He's just the figurehead of a party that has gotten so black and twisted, so far away from the actual core values of a Republican party towards whatever the fuck this is that people don't want to admit it. You ask a conservative from the 90's or early 00's if this party aligns with their views. It likely doesn't.
It's like it was reshaped into being the party FOR idiots, mobilising the uneducated and relying upon their support. The smarter Republicans have been so polarised, so lied to and see the Democrats as so far left, they've felt forced to vote red still, because blue is unthinkable.
I still retain hope that there are the smarter conservatives out there. We may not agree on gun laws, we may not agree on abortion or corporation tax but I want to believe that they don't want ICE kidnapping and killing American citizens. I want to believe they think that starting 2 wars in term is a bad thing. I want them to honestly believe the shit they see with the Epstein files is literally illegal, I want them to see the renaming of lakes and gulfs as pedantic and childish. I want them to believe deep down that there is no such thing as "fake news" and above all I want them to deep down, think they could turn away from something that is actively harming America as a whole - just to get back to normality whereby they can go back to being the conservatives and holding the values that would make me think they're just not my people instead of literal facists.

I think parties need to be abolished and people should only run on their personal and professional merit. Here’s the thing I don’t get though.

Same with my parents. They got to grow up at a time when it was much easier to achieve their ideal life. Supporting a family in a single-income household was super realistic. Being able to save, invest, and retire was the norm. And politicians/corporations weren’t nearly as aggressive and open about crippling everyone below the upper middle class.
A depressing amount of their generation got their bag, and are either indifferent or adamantly opposed to younger generation getting their own.
Thankfully, my parents are starting to get the hint that they definitely fucked up and seem embarrassed about their voting choices…but way too little too late.

It makes me feel uncomfortable in the same way as hearing radio callers on the more liberal radio shows making terrible arguments that usually go unchallenged by the host. Like, you somehow got the right answer, but all the reasoning you did to get there was questionable.
I think it's a lot more useful to think of Trump as a kind of savant- he's really, really gifted at one thing, which is speaking in a way that seems to hypnotize half the country. Remember Sarumon? One of the dangers discussed in LOTR is whether, even without his wizard staff, his silver tongue alone posed a big enough risk to make his freedom to wander a liability for the Fellowship. Turns out, even without magic he still ended up with enough of a following to become a small time criminal kingpin who ruled the Shire from his base of operations at Bag End. He had "abandoned reason for madness," according to Gandalf, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a formidable enemy. When news outlets portray Trump as a doddering old fool, which he isn't, it only causes us to consistently underestimate how much power he wields in his uncanny ability to constantly trigger liberal panic, which he knows is one of his most valuable assets in the eyes of conservatives. They might not always love what he says or does, but the fact that he makes liberals completely apoplectic is like a superpower to them.

Things will have to get really bad here for large scale riots to break out that have real power to change things like some European countries. A lot of us are living paycheck to paycheck and our work culture here is very corporate; most places won't even let you take a sick day, let alone go out and protest. Also, people forget how large our country is and how spread out we are. No kings protests were great to see the support, but largely didn't really change anything.
Only reason why january 6th had such a big turn out was because the loudest person in the room riled up a bunch of ant-like troglodytes to come "take back whats theirs". A lot of us on the other side still believe in civility and still want to believe "democracy" is still working; at least I'd like to think so. Shrugging our shoulders and not casting votes is certainly not an option. This november will be a turning point, no pun intended. If its red down the results, everyone will know whats up.
