“Why are democrats so obsessed with transgenders?” -people that are silent right now about the sitting president promising a genocide.

Prudes skew heavily to conservative/reactionary politics. They've always been very uncomfortable with sexuality... Unless it's adults having sex with kids. They seem pretty okay with that.

u/OldDudeOpinion 6h ago

Especially since all the GOP women look like they’ve had bad gender reassignment surgery and drag makeup applied with a putty knife.

I was under the impression that we don't do bodyshaming, hateful rhetoric and broad generalizations, that's THEIR thing

MAGA face is a genuine phenomenon. It's all about signaling their allegiance to the fuhrer.

Calling out a political group for what they've chosen to do to their own faces isn't "body shaming."

I think the point was that this particular callout is still using trans women and drag queens as the benchmark for ugliness and ridicule. That doesn’t need to be happening here.

yes, that's the main thing that was bugging me. thanks for putting it into words so eloquently

On a similar note, can we talk about the jokes about Vance's eyeliner? I'm still not convinced that it's not just an excuse to still be able to call someone "gay (derogatory)" or "trans (derogatory)" with a veneer of progressivism. For example, if you told a racist he was acting "like a Black person" and compared him to a racist stereotype, you'd just be called racist. So why do we accept the "I'm only saying it because they find it offensive?" argument with LGBT people?

I see what you're saying, but as a trans woman myself it reads to me like calling out bigoted hypocrites for doing a terrible impression of the people they hate.

u/waxteeth 5h ago

That’s fair. I’m trans also (a guy tho) and I generally just call them fuckin ugly.

u/fleranon 5h ago

calling out a group for what they have done to their own body is the exact definition of bodyshaming

u/silvertealio 5h ago

It's not, actually.

u/fleranon 5h ago

according to the dictionary in front of me it's the act "of criticizing, mocking or humiliating someone based on the appearance of their body"

u/silvertealio 5h ago

And yet that's not what you said, is it?

u/fleranon 5h ago

What's YOUR definition, then? It's not body shaming if it concerns a group of people you personally don't like?

u/silvertealio 5h ago

Body shaming is typically done within the context of something people don’t have control over about their own bodies, or things that are challenging to overcome.

MAGA-face is a choice to spend tens of thousands of dollars to look like the villain from Saw. It’s done to signal political allegiance and the fact that you are wealthy enough to fit in. Ironically, it’s often the product of body shaming, as their original faces aren’t “good enough” for the in-group.

How is it not? You’re literally shaming them for their bodies. Seems like their personalities and politics should give you enough ammo that you wouldn’t have to talk about their looks tbh.

u/silvertealio 5h ago

I think it's actually really important to highlight the way a hateful political group is doing horrendous body modifications to themselves to appease Dear Leader while trying to deny genuinely beneficial gender affirmation to trans people.

u/Great_Fault_7231 5h ago

Alright, I don’t like them any more than you do just don’t pretend it isn’t body shaming.  If you think it’s important to body shame them because they modified their bodies to appease Trump then go ahead I guess, it just means you think body shaming is ok under some conditions.

I just think body shaming is typically done in the context of things people don’t have control over, or that are extremely challenging to overcome. It’s often shaming or demeaning people for the way they’re born, or for certain inherited traits that don’t fit particular western ideals.

Spending obscene amounts of money to signal how much you hate other people just doesn’t fall within the same category for me.

Alright it seems like you’re just bending over backwards to rationalize why it’s ok for you to body shame but other people can’t. I’m sure they would say the same thing about gender affirming surgery or being overweight.

I’d hope that you would have the empathy that they lack but that doesn’t seem to be the case, and  it seems like it’s important for you to be able to shame them for the choices they make to their body. Do whatever you want.

I’m actually fascinated that you don’t see a distinction here.

Particularly as MAGA-face is typically the product of body shaming. They were made to feel that their original faces weren’t good enough for the in-group, and were compelled to conform to some distorted patriarchal standard.

Is it bad to shame someone for getting a Nazi tattoo?

Personally, I'm very okay with shaming someone for modifying their body in that way. Would you berate me for that?

u/Great_Fault_7231 3h ago

Where did I say it was bad?  I’m just saying that it’s still body shaming.

If you think it’s ok to body shame in the right context then by all means do it, I’m not the moral police.

Being able to shame people for their bodies as long as it’s “correct” doesn’t sound much different from their rationalizations, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.

Or trafficking girls to Epstein.

u/Eternal_Bagel 5h ago

Is it the first time he has?  Wasn’t he talking about erasing Palestine or Iran or someone with talk of aiming the military at their families as priority targets a little while ago?
