About 1% of our population identified as trans.

That’s literally 3.5 million people. You likely know one, whether you realize it or not.

Of all the asinine things he’s said, this is among the worst.

I don’t understand how this is a controversial topic.

I can’t imagine something worse than not feeling comfortable in your own skin. We should be supporting these folks, and not demonizing them.

It’s present day facism. For it to thrive, it MUST have “others”.

That’s also why folks from “shit hole countries” are targeted.

People evolved to trust those like themselves. It literally kept our species alive. Useful then. Not so much now.

When you have mostly low information, selfish or culturally/physically isolated people (the modern Republican Party, for the most part) you can really ramp up the fear of the other. Because you have no other examples to contradict what you’re being fed.

If you live in or around a major city you probably actually know several. I have like 6-8 people on my staff that identify as trans, and another 25 that identify somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum. It’s very normal and nothing out of the ordinary happens.

I wish that certain segments of the country would realize that they are first and foremost “also people” and beyond that but even more importantly “normal people”.

Honestly, I'm of the thought that lgbt+ as a whole isn't a minority, it's a scared majority that has a little too much infighting.

I truly think most people fall somewhere in the "not 100% cishet" camp, even if just a little. I'm not saying everyone is secretly bisexual, more that almost everyone has some degree of gender and sexuality flexibility somewhere, but may not feel safe expressing it. Something as little as a guy really liking frilly dresses and wishing they could wear one without judgement, or the stereotypical tomboy as the inverse.

Again, small, nearly unnoticed feelings most people don't think about but do challenge gender or sexuality norms.

But good God, some LGBT communities are so self sabotaging. I'm on the ace side of it, and I've run into too many bisexual folks saying the exact same things about Ace folks as the LG said about them not that long ago. Not to mention some groups engage in so much purity testing, and wrote upon those who dare have slight disagreement. Not all groups, but I've talked with others who've had similar experiences. It's not uncommon, just not the majority, but it's dividing what should be cooperative effort.
