My wife works in public schools. One day her and her mom were talking about an upcoming vacation we had planned and her mom said “must be nice to afford that”. Without skipping a beat, my wife said we were able to pay for it due to the bonus she got for helping kids get trans surgery during their recess. Her mom (deep dumb maga) thought she was being honest.

Also, I was threatened with Catholic school because my parents thought I was being “rebellious”. They were confused why I was excited by the idea but changed their minds when I told them how easy the girls were. They asked around and found out the kids at the local Catholic school were always in trouble but rich enough to get away with it. Plus we would have never been able to afford it since we weren’t Catholic.

Your wife sounds hilarious, great way to deflect a passive aggressive comment maybe implying teachers don’t deserve to make enough to afford the bare minimum in life.

I started in a public school, and midway through junior high my mom picked me up after school and we were in the parking lot across the street eating frozen yogurt in the car when about 20 high schoolers crossed over to the parking lot to watch a fight happen off-campus. It suddenly ended when one kid managed to restrain another, and a third kid grabbed a hammer out of the back of a truck and hit the restrained kid over the head with it. Didn’t kill him fortunately but wasn’t good. My mom asked me “How would you like to try going to a private school next year?”

Sounds like your mom doesn't understand how the world works.

Well, I never got hit over the head with a hammer or otherwise injured at what was a violent public school, so I’d have to disagree on that one.

Is it fair that I was able to go somewhere safer because my parents could afford it? Not from the perspective of those who couldn’t, and I hate that others didn’t have that opportunity. But that is exactly how the world works.

Maybe you were just a decent human being that treated others with kindness and wasn't getting in to fights.

Ever thought about it that way?

That’s a kinder way to see things. And I definitely wasn’t one to instigate or participate in fights, so not as likely to get in that kind of fight, for sure. But there were problems with violence on campus, plus the teachers acted like corporal punishment was a competitive sport, so my parents basically bought my way into a safer environment overall. To be fair; they did try to change things from the inside- I noticed that this one bathroom didn’t have doors on the stalls and this one kid was sitting on the toilet while 5 kids stood around him pointing and laughing. I told my parents what a screwed up thing I’d seen, and even though it didn’t happen to me, my dad went on a major crusade to get that changed for the benefit of all the other students. When he first brought it up to the school board, the superintendent or someone like that said “Well, why do they really need them?” And implying that if they don’t need bathroom doors in the army then they don’t need them in a school. So he got a parent organization involved and it took a couple months but they finally got it fixed in every bathroom in the school. And he wasn’t doing that for my direct benefit, I always made it through the day where urinals were sufficient for me. But finally, enough was enough with the hammer attack being the final straw.

Schools are definitely a small step down from prisons. I won't argue that.

Your dad sounds awesome!

Edit: I didn't mean that your mom was not, just that usually when you treat people with respect and kindness you get that in return. Even when the initial interaction was confrontational.

He really is, the older I get the more I realize how much I lucked out. Very generous guy, he’s always helping people miscellaneous projects when they need the help. He turns 80 this year and still has a couple of motorcycles he takes out for fun. Luckily he’s promised me that if he ever gets to the point that he’s not a safe driver he’ll give up the car keys without a fight, unlike when he had to take away his own dad’s car several years back because every day he was showing up with new dents from where he’d hit stuff that he couldn’t/wouldn’t explain. The older I get and the more perspective I get on the broad range of human experiences, the more I’ve learned to appreciate him.

Hell yea! I hope you saw my edit about your mom also. My original post came across somewhat mean and I didn't really mean it that way.

I'm dumb sometimes.

It’s all good! A lot of intent/context is easy to misconstrue with written posts unless we turn it into an essay which is a bad habit of mine. But just from my original post alone, I can see how it could have just as easily looked like our perspective was “Well sucks for the rest of you, we’re outta here!”

My wife teaches.  She says "we can hardly get these kids to write their names on their papers, and people think we're brainwashing them to transition?"
