Moss Pole PSA: This is not a moss pole

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

After multiple posts a day from community members concerned why they’re not getting big leaves, I think it’s time for a sub-wide PSA. The trendy coco poles you see in all the plantfluencer videos and sold now in shops are more or less decorative. I don’t know how they caught on somehow, but they will not allow a pothos to climb and mature indoors like a proper moss pole.

You may have seen them climbing on one before in a greenhouse or online. You may have experienced your pothos attaching to one. But attaching (to a coco pole, a cedar plank, or your drywall) is not the same thing as climbing as far as your plant is concerned. None of these can hold enough moisture indoors to encourage climbing.

So if you just like the aesthetic, have at it and do you. But if your goal is mature leaves, don’t waste your money & time. Get yourself a proper moss-filled pole.

Say no to coco 🍃

Which Pothos is this? My first born child. Snow or marble?

Her new leaves always come out a variegated yellow like the one on the bottom right, but then the yellow variegation turns white. She was sold to me as a marble but sometimes I think she’s really a snow queen. She’s a beauty queen regardless 👸🏻

Care & Propagation Can i propagate this?

I 'stole' this pothos. (Actually im not sure if its a pothos, can someone clarify?🙃) I want to grow my own pothos, however i am not sure if this was the right piece to take. The lower root is very limpy. The root more above seems fine but the leaf is filled with holes.

How can i propagate this? Should i cut it into two so that i can try to grow roots from both of these nodes?

Which Pothos is this? Lemon Meringue or Emerald?

I got this one as a small cutting off an Etsy seller some time ago and it was declared as an Emerald. When I found out about the existence of the Lemon Meringue I'm kinda questioning it though.

What do you guys think?

(Btw any clues why it got the brownish spots on the big leaf on the right?)

So I got my sweet baby Rey at the beginning of this year and she’s really taken off! I have never had such a happy plant (plant noob here) and I want to make sure I’m doing the right stuff to ensure a long, happy life!
She’s been repotted once (a few months ago) and has lived on my dining table this whole time. I would like to keep the vines sprouting, but I’m not sure if there’s a better place for her at this point.
TIA! ✨🪴✨

What’s wrong here?? Browning leaves:( repot?

*Re-upload, as i managed to not include the pictures*

Hello, wonderful people of the pothos reddit!

´Tis finally my time to ask for help.

My pothos has been developing some browning these last couple of weeks. This seems to be in the early stages, as there are only a few leaves with considerable damage. Image 2 shows the front and back of the leaf I first noticed, and img. 3 is from two leaves on another vine (front and back).

Some general info:

The plant is placed in a west facing window, as shown in img. 4, and I live in Scandinavia.

It is potted in a chunky soil mix, with perlite, orchid bark, and coco-coir (img. 5) which suits my water schedule well - and is watered when I shove my piggy little finger in the soil and it comes out dry. I fertilise with a very diluted (1/2-1/4 of the dose on the bottle) NPK 7-1-5 liquid plant food.

There are some roots coming out the bottom of the plastic pot it is in - though as has been said many-a-time - that is not necessarily a sign to repot.

! Due to it rapidly approaching autumn here, I am also a little extra hesitant to repot.

Soooo... what do we think?

It was doing so well for the longest time, but all of a sudden totally stopped growing and started drooping. My parlor palm right next to it is doing the same thing. Have started treating with Bonide systemic and captain jacks dead bug brew, do yall think this is the right call?

General care info:
I live in the PNW, and this guy is in a 3rd story east facing window, so it gets a good amount of morning direct sun. Water whenever the pot is light, roughly every two weeks. Fertilize once every couple of months.

Mushrooms in my pothos

I saw the comments on my last post just after i had watered my plants, that being said let me say- every other plant, and pothos’ especially that I own become dry extremely quickly. I live in an apartment and almost always have AC and two fans going. So I just watered them all together because i figured if those plants were dry, this one must be too. This one is in our dining room, much closer to the kitchen (more moisture from cooking maybe idk?) and away from the AC unit and fans, these are the only reasons I can think that this one retained so much water.

Should I chop, prop, and repot? I feel like there are a lot here and it can’t possibly be good 😭 I don’t want to dry it out too long to make sure it’s all dead because, some of the leaves closer to the root are wilty, I neglected her a bit this spring

Recently repotted (about 2 weeks ago) and she shares a pot with two heartleaf philodendrons. I realize now that the glazed pot isn’t the best option for them but this stem and leaves are concerning. I watered pretty heavily when I repotted them but haven’t watered since. The pot does a good drainage hole on the bottom. For the first few days I had the pot about 1 ft from an E-facing window and then I moved it to ~4 ft from the same E window when the leaves turned yellow. (I moved it near the window for pictures.) Did I over water? Should I repot with better soil? Any answers & suggestions are appreciated!
