Eligibility Trans-Olza border changes?
Potentially tricky claim – my grandfather was born in 1925 in Błędowice/Bludovice (now Czechia). At the time, the borders of this Trans-Olza region shifted dramatically. In 1918, Dolni Bludovice was assigned to Poland. 1919 saw war between Poland and Czechoslovakia. 1920, agreed that Dolni Bludovice went to Czechoslovakia (so the time of my grandfather’s birth). But then in 1938, Poland annexes the Czech part of Cieszyn Silesia and Błędowice/Bludovice becomes Poland once more. 1939 sees Germany invade Poland.
So my great-grandma (b.1903) was born in Poland. By the time my Grandfather was born, it was Czechoslovakia and then 1938 turns it back into Poland for 11 months. We don’t have any details of his father – this was left blank on the birth certificate. I think I can possibly prove that my great grandmother resided in Błędowice/Bludovice continuously (I can find the family in the 1921 census and have applied for the 1930/1930 censuses – still awaiting a response).
My grandfather was visiting family in Poland when WW2 started. Details are sketchy (working to confirm) but we think he was sent to a forced labour camp in ‘Siberia’. From there, he self-identified as Polish (was fluent in Polish) and joined Anders Army. Eventually fighting with the British. Again, details of his military service are sketchy, but am awaiting a response from the UK Ministry of Defence. He was brought to the UK after the end of the war in a Polish Family Camp in Staffordshire. He married a UK woman in 1954 and he naturalised as a UK citizen in 1964. My mother was born in 1957, prior to naturalisation.
I would like to apply for Polish citizenship by descent, but I am not sure about the territorial changes. Has anyone been in this circumstance? What would you say my chance of success is?
