✉️ LORs random question

i know people recommend having a LOR from someone who’s seen you in a clinical setting, would an NP count for this? my clinical position is pretty much exclusively overseen by nurses and i have a pretty good relationship with one of them and he offered to write me a letter, is this ok or is it recommended to get an MD letter for MD schools? tysm and good luck to everybody!!

A nurse supervisor is a great person to have a letter from who can speak to your clinical experience, but it's also a good idea to have an MD letter who can speak to your qualifications to become a good physician and understanding of the role. Most people ask a doctor they shadowed.

thanks so much!! for some reason i thought we weren’t supposed to ask doctors we shadowed haha but i can definitely do that!

You need more than one LOR of course, so you can do both. If this NP knows you well then have the NP write an LOR. I didn't have any doctors write an LOR for me when I applied 10 years ago FWIW. I had 4 professors, a work supervisor, and the head of the place I volunteered at. You don't absolutely need a doctor LOR, but if you have one then great

Just commenting here that you do not need an MD or DO letter to get into medical school, but it can help (esp DO schools bc they actually make this a requirement). My paramedic partner wrote mine. 10 ii's, 3 As, all others were WD or WL. Don't let people talk to you in absolutes about med school apps like these people who lurk here with no real experience.

You absolutely need an MD letter for MD schools and a DO letter for DO schools. Even if the school doesnt require it, it is helpful to show you actually looked into the profession and someone who went through medical school can vouch for you. The NP letter is a nice bonus to attest to your clinical skills
