PS2 with PS3/PS4 controller

To use a PS3 or PS4 controller on a PlayStation 2, does it have to be an original controller, or can it be a third-party one?

A while back, I attempted to pair a fake PS4 controller with a BlueRetro PS2 adapter, but it never worked. The original PS4 and PS5 controllers pair up instantly.

But I've seen people say they managed to connect a fake PS3 controller.

That’s why I specified about my experience with fake PS4 controllers, I don’t know about PS3

Had a wingman with a knockoff DS4, mine worked. Too bad I lost that wingman
