PS2 Disc not reading
My copy of mgs2 is not reading. I bought it recently at my local retro shop and they perform disc repairs when needed - all others working fine.
The problem I'm faced with is that inserting the disc gives me the red format disc menu. I also tried it in my PS3 which also didn't read the disc. I then tried it in my pc disc reader and booted it in PCSX2 no problem.
I've cleaned the disc and the disc reader and all other disc's have worked no problem except for this one.
The only thing I could think is causing this problem is a mark I've spotted on it highlighted in red on in my pictures.

Is that necessary for this mark on the disc ecen though it isn't a scratch? What would you call it so I can find out more on my own.

I'm just thinking of things to try you haven't done dude.
If resurfacing doesn't work then that mark you circled could be the disc warped or rotted and could be game over for that copy of MGS2 but I'm no expert.

By all means mate use toothpaste if you want I was on about taking it somewhere that has a disc resurfacer for a proper resurface it looks like it could do with a freshen up in general.
EDIT: just re read your original post.
Take that back and have them test it if it doesn't work for them either then get it resurfaced 👌🏼

From what I know they do resurface work on all their disc's before selling them but it's not a bad idea. Cheers

Hmm 🤔 the overall condition of that disc doesn't scream to me at least it's been resurfaced unless it's been the lightest possible setting ?
A proper resurface should take all the marks off that disk really and I can see alot of surface level marks still on there in the flash.

I'm not sure. They might not usually do it if the condition is surface level or if the game is too common but I know they've done it with others

It does. No problem on anything; games, movies, etc

That’s not necessarily end all be all statement
You can have a drive that works on everything and then one game (brand new) won’t work. It’s probably just the beginning of the disc drive going bad. That disc in the photos looks in pretty good condition

If they repair discs it doesnt look like it. Id take it back and have them polish or resurface it. I dont think that discoloration in the highlighted picture would effect the laser but you never know. id start with getting it resurfaced or polished based on the machine they use. A good shop should have an Elm Eco Master or Autosmart.

It's strange that it works on my PC and not any of the playstation models. Aside from the discoloration it doesn't have any scratches that would lead to the systems being unable to read recognize them. That's just me though

PS2 lasers are old and wierd. If your ps2 is reading all four disc formats without any issues its almost always the disk. When the ps2 sees the disk it has a few sectors it checks along with verifying the disc type. Something small could be telling it its unreadable. The PC probably is just verifying the disk is readable and not doing the true test cycle the ps2 does. Id just get it resurfaced and if that doesnt work return it or try to get it replaced.

I guess that's likely the reason. It's a shame I don't have any other dual layered disc's to try.

Try to find a copy of God of War those two are the easiest to find cheap. MGS2 Substance is DVD9 but the original is just a single layer dvd. So if the ps2 is reading other DVDs it’s not the ps2

I found that Yakuza 2 is dual layered and it works. So yeah it's likely just the disc verification then. Appreciate the help

Looks like water/moisture damage, I've had it happen with a few DVDs before. Usually should'nt be a problem unless a serious case, but to minimalize it, you should plug the middle hole with your finger if cleaning a disc with water and let it fully dry before using it, It tends to get in easier there especially if you use it while there is water inside it, the playstation is basicly a sentrifuge for it to spread.
It's more likely to not read properly because of a scratch on the disk. Unless you have a Dvd Polisher, you could try polishing it with toothpaste, but avoid using whitening toothpaste, because it often contains larger, harsher abrasive particles or baking soda crystals that can create deeper new scratches on the disc.
