His 💩 has to stop!

I work in land protection for a national nonprofit in the mid-Atlantic and used to be a state park ranger. From that vantage point, this weekend I published an essay on the last twenty months of federal public lands changes, and the three actions that land within ten days this September: the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante monument reductions on the 11th, the ESA harm rule rescission taking effect on the 14th, and the Roadless Rule comment deadline on the 21st. I tried to write it for people who don't already agree with me: the administration's reasons are quoted in full and in its own words. I welcome all thoughts, questions, and feedback.

This public-land issue should concern anyone who hikes, camps, watches wildlife, hunts or believes public property should remain public.

The proposed GAME Act would transfer more than 2,000 acres of BLM land near Glenwood Springs into private ownership through a land exchange involving Out of Bounds Ranch.

Supporters claim the land sees little public use. Local residents strongly dispute that. These parcels are used for recreation and provide access and connectivity to larger areas of public land.

But the bigger problem is the precedent.

Public land belongs to all of us. It should not be handed to a private landowner simply because the public is promised different access somewhere else. Once land is privatized, the public generally loses it forever. Gates go up. Access disappears. Habitat becomes fragmented. A shared resource becomes a private asset.

This is how public lands are lost: not always through a massive nationwide selloff, but one obscure bill, one misleading acronym and one “land exchange” at a time.

Even if you have never visited this particular area, the principle matters. If Congress can justify privatizing accessible public land in Colorado, the same model can be repeated throughout the West.
