This comic always reminded me of this story.

When I was like 13 I went to the Englishtown flea market with my grandfather who knew the comic book guy personally, his name was Dennis and they talked every Sunday for hours about all sorts of bullshit and he would buy his car magazines. I went with him and he told me to hit whatever I wanted and I was reading around, I never really liked comics. Superheros don't interest me, the mob comics always showed the cops as the good guys, the sci Fi stuff was pretty cool but basically every problem comics had from the eras I was reading them is they were all written very dry. Not interesting. The only real genre driven comic that stood against that were the horror comics like tales from the crypt. Which were pretty badass.

But, there was one magazine that I found which stood in contrast to all of those and it was mad magazine. Its very rare in my life where I see a piece of media I can relate to, it almost never happens. I can probably count the times it happens on one hand. But that was one of those moments. Mad magazine instantly and forever shaped my personality. They were 25 cents each, but marked down to 10 because nobody bought them and they were all very old issues and reprints. So I literally just grabbed the whole bin and asked my grandfather to buy it for me to my surprise he agreed. I guess he figured it's better to read comics than play video games and shit to which I respect that line of thinking. And he had a soft spot for mad magazine too because it was a piece of American culture, it really doesn't get more American than mad magazine if you think about it.

So for the next ten years I read and reread those magazines front to back and I brought them everywhere I had to be from dentist appointments and so on. It's a damn shame that it doesn't exist anymore but I'll be honest I'm not that heartbroken over it because I read a few issues in the early 2010s and the quality was pretty fucking bad I'm not gonna lie. So I'm actually glad they took it behind the shed and put it out of it's misery instead of having it continue on as some skinwalking parody of itself.

I'm on Reddit so I'm actually in good company of old people that remember what the Internet was like before social media. Before these platforms there was a severe discoverability problem, and that wasn't a design flaw of being an artist that was the natural consequence of choosing to be one unfortunately. You just accepted that if by some miracle you actually did make it as an artist, you were going to be a cog in the machine working as a utility component to make marvel, Disney, or some other major studio rich through a disgusting amount of unpaid and uncredited work. The dream job was one as a concept artist for a major video game studio which were worked just as hard with even less job security because nowadays game studios don't even have in house concept artists anymore.

So the reality for most artists that didn't want stan lee to own every waking second of their life was to wake up from the dream. Some people made it work, don't get me wrong the ancient titans of webcomics deserve respect for their risk because back then the only avenue available was to start a website and hope the traffic generated enough ad revenue. Maybe you were really lucky and got a contract with a game or news website, but that was even more rare.

Thankfully it's not like that anymore. For all the negatives social media brings, for it's centralization of culture and echo chambers it has somehow also decentralized those very things in different ways to where now an artist can grow his audience independently from studios and publishers. They will always be the enemy of artists, if you need proof of that just remember how Jack Kirby created half of marvels most profitable superheroes and never saw a fucking dime. The creators of Superman, Batman, blade. Same story. And it's still happening. For as much shit as leefield gets for being a bad artist, and I'll be the first to agree with that sentiment, he at least did create one of the few studios that let artists keep the rights to their creations and he will forever deserve his credit for that.

And now, you don't need a studio anymore. The audience now seeks out the artists they like on a personal basis instead of paying an exploitative company the lions share of of money you would spend on a piece of media for the off chance of seeing your favorite artists work that month. It's gotten a lot better. But improvements can still be made. I hope the same thing that happened to comics and artwork happens to film and movies, because that monstrosity needs to be humbled in a big way.
