Discussion Terrain use?

How does everyone capitalise on the terrain, especially cliffs etc. I’ve had a large force of appocos being smoked by like 5 mirage tanks by having the higher ground and tucked into a corner of a cliff lol

I liked turtling across the map, putting base defences on map choke points.

There's a few maps with natural choke points that I fill up. It's particularly amusing when the computer is nearly beaten so they send all their forces at my base, only to get slaughtered in the attempt. Particularly if I am using Mirage Tanks or Initiates since my map of choice does this near the water, and dying infantry run towards the water if they're on fire.

Out of curiosity, are Mirage Tanks good for defending mostly because of they get to attack first from stealth, or are they also just strong head to head vs other tanks? (I think they're particularly strong against ground troops but their damage to structures is awful, so wasn't sure if they are actually strong against other tanks.)

Personally I use them mostly for defense or ambushes, but I'm a pretty casual player. It can take out vehicles in three to five hits and units don't automatically target it back, so it's no slouch.

>dying infantry run towards the water if they're on fire.

Is this a custom mod which adds this function, or is this just your headcanon due to your map of choice?

I ask because I’ve never known that to be an AI mechanic/function in RA2, Yuri’s Revenge or Mental Omega, but if someone has developed a way to add it, it would certainly be very cool to see!

No, it's a specific game mechanic I noticed. I had filled up the land bridge with Initiates in a build up for a good old fashioned zerg rush and as enemy infantry approached while I was prepping they'd burst into flames...and after a while I noticed they tended to run towards the water. I eventually tested this. I apologize for the low quality and audio. My computer's did not want to capture video so this was shot with a phone camera instead. And it's from a while ago, and I hadn't planned on sharing it or I would've turned the TV off in the background.

But as you can see, every soldier who bursts into flames runs for the water. This is using the version from EA's app, with the CnCNet stuff added on to make it work on my computer. I only noticed this myself a while ago and I never tested it on the completely unmodded OG software as my current computer won't cooperate with it, but it would seem like a strange add-on for EA or CnCNet to include

This is fascinating, what an awesome find/mechanic!

Wow! That is absolutely amazing! Thanks so much for sharing, and for the video!

I absolutely agree, they 100% appear to be pathing towards the water, especially at the end of the video where there are clear path changes to locate the water.

Would love for an old Westwood/EA dev or CnCNet dev to confirm it one day!

Higher ground gives ranged bonuses as well. A GI paradrop on a hill would eventually turn them elite, which would let them outrange many base defenses lol.

Same goes for Siege Chopper, which seems to be designed around that mechanic since its baseline range is kinda bad.
