Been at this company since 2020. Fully remote the entire time. Got the email in March. They're calling it "Hybrid Plus" which is a phrase that should not exist. Four days in office, one day "flex remote."

Did the first week. Here's what it actually cost.

The drive is 28 miles each way. With morning traffic that's an hour and ten minutes. Evening traffic it's an hour and a half. Parking in the garage they recommend is $22 a day, which the company "is exploring options to subsidize," which means no. So that's $88 a week, $352 a month, $4,224 a year, money I did not have to spend two weeks ago.

Bought two pairs of office pants from the Banana Republic outlet on Sunday because I had three pairs left from 2019 and they no longer fit in the way pants are supposed to fit. $164.

The first day my badge didn't work and I waited in the lobby for 25 minutes while someone from facilities looked for the spare card. The second day I had a 9am meeting and got there at 9:11 because I underestimated the parking line. The third day I sat at a hot desk next to a woman who took a 90-minute video call about her divorce on speaker for some reason. The fourth day I gave up trying to do focus work and just did Slack.

My manager is in Chicago. Half my team is in Berlin. The work I'm supposed to be collaborating on in person is being done by people who are not in this building and have never been in this building.

I haven't taken the dog for a walk in five days. He sits by the door at 5:15 because thats when I used to come downstairs.

I've been fully remote for six years and I genuinely don't know how people did this every day.

Started a spreadsheet of remote-first companies hiring in my function. It's longer than I expected.

How is that possible? What if someone pings/calls/emails you? I guess some roles can truly be done at any time and work can be schedule around life.

For me, I still have to be available 9-5 even though I WFH.

For people who are able to do stuff during work hours, how do you do it?

Please know this is just based off personal experience. I do not recommend working for AHP. Extremely stressful, no support from management since they are always busy taking calls as well, back to back to back calls all day from start to finish. They monitor you like a HAWK. please note if you are 30 seconds late from either lunch/break you will get half of a warning right away and you must call attendance line (stupid). You do WAY more than customer service. Call audits are graded ridiculously, they will deduct points for the dumbest things.
They also don’t care about you truly, your mental health matters more. !

I’ve been a contingent worker for 2 years now, been at my current position 1 year. I make around $53 an hour on W2.
We recently bought a house 100 miles away. I thought I could handle the drive but I can’t. It’s 3 days in office and the drive without traffic is 2 hours each way. Travel to work costs a minimum of $100 per week.
I was just offered a fully remote position as a contingent worker at a company I worked for before this one but the pay is $37 an hour.
Is the financial difference worth it? Or should I keep looking? What would all you do?

I keep seeing videos about people making money doing AI-related tasks like training chatbots and labeling images. Most of them seem like they were made by the platforms themselves so I do not trust them.

Can anyone share what they are actually doing? I have no tech background. Just looking for something I can do from my phone or laptop in spare time that is not a scam.

During a layover last week I had some massive excel sheets to review but setting up my usual kit in the lounge is always a pain, unpacking the laptop, stand, cables, power brick. For a short layover its usually not even worth the effort.

Ive always been kinda obsessed with traveling productively so I recently ditched my standard gear for a completely wire-free setup. Bluetooth keyboard and mouse plus a battery powered wireless monitor I cast a second screen to when I need it. Now I can just grab any seat in the terminal and start working. No cables also makes packing and dashing to the gate way easier.

There are tradeoffs tho. Keyboard and mouse are fine but wireless casting to the second screen has noticable lag so I only use it for reading docs not precision clicking. And battery life is limited without wires tho honestly that just forces me to focus and stop doomscrolling. Worst case I drop back to the single screen and go back to juggling windows.

now i have 3 years of experience, so before I started working remotely, I thought I would eventually get tired of being at home.

I thought I would miss talking to people, going out for lunch with coworkers, and having a reason to leave the house every morning.

But honestly, I don't miss most of it.

I don't miss getting stuck in traffic. I don't miss rushing in the morning. I don't miss spending money on lunch just because I didn't have time to make something at home.

I put off sorting my webcam out for years, which is dumb, it is the one thing everyone on a call actually sees of me. I have owned three now. Not on purpose, I just kept being not quite happy and buying another one.

The C920S was first. Everyone has had this one at some point. It is fine, you plug it in and it works and in daylight I looked like a normal professional adult. Mics do the job. It has that little sliding shutter too, which I did not care about when I bought it and then used constantly. What got me was it just sits there. I turn to my other monitor a lot, or lean back when I am thinking, and every time I did that I slid half out of the picture. By about 5pm when the room went dim it got kind of murky as well. So it stayed on my desk a long time and I was never really happy, I just could not name the fix.

The fix I was after, a camera that moves and keeps you in shot, turns out to basically be a Logitech PTZ, and those are all conference-room things. Meeting-room hardware a company installs. Not something one person puts on a desk in a spare room. Then the Emeet Pixy, it does the moving and following bit and is made for one person at a desk. It stays on me when I move around, which was the thing I wanted. The presets also save onto the camera itself so a call starting does not wipe your framing, did not think I would care about that, I do now. Low light it is nothing special, average, so there is a lamp on in the evenings and that is that. For one person at home who does not need real conference gear it might be the easier one to land on. That depends a lot on you though, if you sit still on calls a lot of this does not matter.

The PowerConf C200 I almost left out because I barely think about it, but the audio on it is surprisingly good, clear, picks me up from across the room, and cuts background noise well. Video is 2K and fine. It doesn't move, though, so it never became my main one. The Pixy's built‑in mic is perfectly adequate for calls, and the tracking is what made the real difference for me.

Where it actually mattered for me was the interviews and the weekly team meeting, the higher stakes ones. The everyday calls, not so much. Turning up as a clear present person in the ones that count did something. Microphones might be the next thing I get into since that is the other half of this. All from my own desk and what people I know use, not off a list somewhere.

Hello. Anyone know where to look for remote night shift jobs, preferable PRN (as needed) or full time 12 hour shifts? I found one as a Virtual Patient Registrar at a hospital, but the post was filled already when I clicked to apply. After reading the schedule description, I thought wow that would be my perfect dream job schedule! I was so disappointed when I saw its been filled… I’m looking for Any Data Entry/ Data Validation, AI Training/ Validation, or anything medical record related or claims or entry level coding related. 

I’m currently a remote Verifications Research Specialist for a background screening company, with 10 years of remote work from home Data Entry/ Validation, Benefit Administration, Customer Service under strict deadlines, while maintaining zero quality errors and exceeding the set amount of documents per hour metrics. Cross trained in AI training and validation. I love what I do and working from home. I would love to find something where I could work 12 hour shifts, preferably night shifts (but I am also available for 12 hour day shifts) and would prefer PRN where I could just pick up 2 to 3 shifts a week. I’m interested in hospitals too since I have a Medical Billing & Coding Certificate along with 96 completed college course credits towards Medical Office Management and Health Science Degree. 

Any advice on searching for this type of job or any specific companies to look into is greatly appreciated!
