Pointless alien races

Post image

This is from today’s Pointless.

For those of you unfamiliar with this program, this bonus round consists of the contestants working together to find the choices which are true, but no one in the hundred people who were asked managed to identify or remember. (The population are given 60 seconds to name as many as they can.).

Of the six: two are false (in this case not Star Trek races), two are true but score points (they are Star Trek races but people asked came up with them), and two are true and pointless (these are the ones they were trying to find).

The two false ones often have amusing or trick relationships to the question. There is one of those here!

The big disadvantage of the contestants had: none of them were Trekkies. So they had to guess . And guessed badly.

OMG, this describes so many reddit comments.

My guesses:

Talosians: Star Trek race but "pointless."

Tholians: Star Trek race but people came up with them.

Jenners: False (Kardashian / Cardassian connection?)

Zabrak: False (Star Wars race of which Darth Maul is one)

Tribbles: Star Trek race but people came up with them.

Vidiians: Star Trek race but "pointless"

I'd flip Talosians and Tholians. Talosians were famously featured in the TOS episodes with Pike (both the OG pilot, and the same episode recut as its only two-parter) so thanks to both these and SNW bumping people's interest in Pike, the normies of the street that they asked might actually know about them. Tholians, OTOH, are only in one TOS episode named after them, and then they only pop up in the flesh (so to speak) in Enterprise's mirror universe two-parter because they are expensive to put on screen.

You're probably correct about the rest: Tribbles are well-known, Jenners and Zabrak are not ST species, and Vidiians were only in Voyager; when it comes to Trek the average British man of the street they asked is likely a boomer who has only watched TOS.

(If the question was about Doctor Who species, guessing the pointless ones might be harder.)

Tholians featured quite a few times on Enterprise, not just in the mirror episode. They are also featured relatively often as one of the stronger lesser-known empires in the Alpha Quadrant in beta canon stuff (e.g. video games).

I would honestly expect that nobody answers Tribbles, simply because that's not what you think of when someone asks you to name Star Trek races. You'd think of intelligent species (e.g. nobody is going to remember to name Targ or Sehlat either even though they are relatively well-known, just because the question makes your mind start out in a different direction).

Tribbles and Tholians are both in the name of the episode where they're introduced.

The Cage never aired though, so why would non-Trekkies know something from it? The Tholians are referenced prominently in a TOS episode title though.

u/starkravingblah 8d ago

The Cage was restored and aired in 1988.

Never aired during the original run. But it aired at the end of TNG S2 to fill out airtime because of the shortened season because of a strike.

The Talosians also featured prominently in Discovery season two (which was available on Betflix and linear TV in the UK).

But the Menagerie did air

I'm a reasonably avid consumer of classic Trek. I never would have come up with Vidiians.

Gotta watch Voyager then!

u/dittbub 8d ago

I didn’t watch but I think
The two pointless are vidiian and talosian. Two made up ones are obviously jenners and zabrak

u/LiamtheV 8d ago

Zabrak are star wars, not sure about Jenners though.

u/Cyberhaggis 8d ago

I believe it's a pune or play on words: Jenners=Kardashians=Cardassians

12

u/LiamtheV 8d ago

Jenners are Kardashians?

I hate that I now know more about them than I did a few moments ago.

9

u/Cyberhaggis 8d ago

My apologies for my part in this pop culture revelation, they are a curse.

2

u/TheLadyScythe 7d ago

Blame O.J. Simpson. No one would have heard of the Kardashians without him.

u/Electronic-Country63 8d ago

Obligatory “GNU Terry Pratchett”. Also good catch I was trying to work that one out!

Jenner's a light battlemech out of the Battletech/Mechwarrior universe.

u/feeschedule 8d ago

Ah, a man of culture!

1

u/queerornot 7d ago

I was about to write this very answer, so sure it was an obscure reference only me thought of. I was wrong. Well played.

1

u/CrashlandZorin 7d ago

Not as obscure as you'd think. The Battletech community's still pretty strong.

Hoping Jenner is a reference to the acto, Barry Jenner, the man behind the best belt buckle in Trek

7

u/06Wahoo 8d ago

No, they clearly are talking about the girl who starred in Keeping up with the Cardassians.

u/YourBossIsOnReddit 7d ago

Ohhhh, that must be Kira's mom

I haven’t seen this show before, are the pointless ones meant to be pointless in the universe of Star Trek? Like they’re kinda ineffective in story terms?

8

u/dittbub 8d ago

It’s more like the inverse of family feud. It’s a general trivia show and they survey people and lowest scores win. Getting the obscure (and right!) answers is the game.

7

u/darkslide3000 8d ago

I would expect Talosian and Tribbles. Simply because when someone asks for a "race", everyone's mind immediately goes to intelligent species and nobody would think of Tribbles. The Vidiians were one of the top 5 most prominent Voyager races.

9

u/plum_stupid 8d ago

What delimits pointless?

7

u/drquakers 8d ago

They poll 100 people before the show, so this would be something like "name all the star trek races you can think of". If none of that 100 thought of it, it is pointless.

3

u/vaska00762 7d ago

It's like the opposite of Family Feud/Fortune, deliberately trying to find the most obscure correct answer to a question.

1

u/bangonthedrums 8d ago

As in: scores zero points

4

u/Wooper160 8d ago

Jenner-Kardashians. Zabrak are Star Wars. Talosians are from the Pilot Episode. Vidiians are from Voyager so they’re probably pointless. Tribbles just eat and breed so they are literally pointless in universe even though they’re iconic. Tholians have been in every series since the original but are pretty minor

4

u/jerslan 8d ago

Tholians have been in every series since the original but are pretty minor

They've only been seen in TOS and Enterprise. They do get mentioned a fair bit in most later series though.

2

u/Wooper160 8d ago

The mentions were what I meant by “in”

5

u/LunchCautious8781 8d ago

I'm surprised that the producers of this program did not decide to sneak "Thetans" in there as a reference. Although I do not know if anyone in the United Kingdom would necessarily get the reference, given that I tend to think of Scientology as a more American thing, due to being founded by an American and being rooted in ideas of self help that seem very much rooted in American ideology.

2

u/maester_t 8d ago

Thank you, OP, for including context here too!

2

u/_Ilobilo_ 8d ago

how did they manage to guess badly when 4 out of 6 are correct

13

u/dittbub 8d ago

Tbf only the 2 “pointless” ones matter

8

u/_Ilobilo_ 8d ago

yes, I should've read the post body lol

I would love to see Jenners in star trek
