I've taken two road trips, one from Iowa to Montana, one from Iowa to Ohio last month, and a friend of mine took one last month from Colorado to North Carolina, and both of us were laughing about how it was all just road construction, on both main highways and secondary highways/raods.

I swear everywhere I drive there is road construction, and much of it is just miles of cones, turning the highway into a one lane, and no work being done.

Has anyone else seen this?

The tricky thing about the desert is that it can absolutely appear to be a calm sunny and hot day, but then boom! Here comes some rain, followed by a flash flood or eroding cliffs. My partner and I are planning a caravan road trip between San Francisco and LA. We are looking to rent a caravan for 14 days and were wondering if anyone knows of any reliable caravan rental companies we could use. My wife and I used to make a road trip hard & fast, but as we're now in our 60's laying over at a rest-stop isn't appealing anymore.

It's a luxury to sleep in a real bed, and something I have come to appreciate when on the road.

But our plans have never been tacked down to a specific itinerary, so we take the path laid out by google maps at the time of departure and update as we move.

An example traveling from Pensacola, FL to Springfield, MO: departure depend upon loading a trailer so we were delayed by an hour or so. Then to project out where we're going to be in 6\~8 hours and imagine where we're going to be. But that is affected by bathroom stops, trailer checks, re-fueling and of course food & coffee.

So the plan is not to commit to a motel reservation but to delay the booking until an hour or two from a likely layover location.

So it boils down to me on Google Maps trying to explain to my wife to find the Super 8 motel in Jackson, MS which is along the route.

"The Mrs" brings up Expedia which confuses her with a host of options and none of them coordinate with our path of travel.

So I'm upset 'cause she can't find the hotel I called out, and she's trying to find the best bargain which could easily take us 15 miles out of the way.

I've made the mistake in the past of settling for the motel in front of me at the moment, which never seems to meet her standards, is way over priced and doesn't have any amenities that work to our advantage because we're a late check-in and an early departure.

So on this trip from Pensacola I don't make this same mistake. She books some non-smoking room at a hotel with an included breakfast... 8 miles off course.

"We" check in and find two ashtrays in the room, that wreaks of stale cigarette smoke. \[I should have advocated for the smoke free room as I checked in, so of course it's my fault.\]

The Breakfast Bar had a pancake robot serving a single, rubbery silver-dollar pancake every two minutes. There were 2 cold cereal options, some yogurt, bread for toast and apples for fresh fruit. Apple & orange juice and coffee & tea.

Planning a trip to California and driving from North Carolina. Roughly 2,700 miles and planning to drive late October or early November. Latest December. Hoping to stay at least a week.
I drive a Chevy equinox 2019 with almost 180k miles.

Basically looking for tips and tricks lol.

Idk where to begin, idk if I should rent a car but idk where or what. Driving my car sounds good but the mileage makes me worry for the worst. What should I take with me for the car just in case the worst happens. Money isn’t that big of a issue but saving is key. Got a credit card and saving up personal money but the hotels leading up to California and staying the week is what’s kicking me. Things I should look out for or be cautious of.

I flew into Portland, OR and rented a vehicle, then went to Crate Lake National Park, Lava Beds National Monument, and then Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve. I am now in Crescent City, CA and will be seeing the Redwood Forests today (Tuesday) and then returning to Portland, where I fly out on Friday.

My GF and are coming off a 8000 mile 32 day roadtrip starting from the east coast and traveling though the PNW specifically. Really loved it as we did a mixture of overlanding & standard campsites, really just had such a rich experience. (our first ever long form roadtrip).

Our next tentative plan is to do something similar for roughly 20-25 days maybe early 2028 With the focal point being the southwestern states. Primarily Southwest Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Maybe California. Ideally we’ll be driving to Denver to see some friends as our first stop then going from there to Colorado Springs and that’s as far as we’ve gotten. I haven’t done much of my own research yet, but I wanted to crowdsource some ideas and information on what we should see. We love to hike, and I love camping in the national forests. I know there is plenty of popular destinations like Zion or Grand Canyon NP. But we’d like to go to some of the places less traveled where we can.

Any advice or recommendations are welcome!

​I’ve already reserved a rental car through Hertz for $1,470.50 for a 50-day trip. My plan is to drive counterclockwise from LA all the way to New York, head up to Canada, and then return to LA. (The general route is LA → Texas → Florida → New York → Niagara Falls → Chicago → Banff → LA, though I'll be hitting many more spots along the way.)

​I'm aiming for a fuel efficiency of at least 35 MPG (15 km/L) and expecting around $1,000 for gas. For sleeping, I plan to car camp at Love's Travel Stops, Walmarts, or truck stops, using a single-size topper bought from Walmart. In major cities like New York or in states where car camping is prohibited, I'll stay at cheap accommodations like hostels/dormitories for up to two weeks total. For showers, I’m planning to get a Planet Fitness monthly membership ($50 for two months).

​After subtracting flight tickets and vehicle costs (including gas), my remaining practical budget is $5,000. I’ll try my best to make it work within this budget, but if push comes to shove, I might have to dip into my severance pay.

Hello All - New to this group! I’m planning a road trip during Christmas week to visit my family (from CT to NC) as flight tickets at that time are usually really expensive. I was wondering if there are folks here that have done similar 600 mile trips and was wondering if I should plan on taking a break somewhere near DC or start at 3-4am and finish the drive the same day. Also any tips or suggestions or just in general anything in particular that I should be mindful of for driving at that time of the year (apart from possible snow)? I will have both kids and seniors with me and two drivers in total. I do have experience of driving from CT to Toronto many times (around 500 miles). Thanks in advance.

Just curious if one roadtrip is worth dropping a bunch of $$$ on the crash rated crates, obviously I would use it for vet runs and such but my dogs are older and reactive so they don’t go on many car rides to places out side of the home…

Also any recommendations on brands is greatly appreciated.
For context, I have a large SUV (3rows, 2nd & 3rd row always stay down) and my dogs are also large (75-85lbs)

I'd leave Tuesday after work and need to be back Thursday afternoon. I'm trying to spend as little as possible, so I'd probably sleep in my car. I'm open to pretty much anywhere in Eastern NC or beyond.

I don't really have a destination in mind yet, so I'm curious what you guys would recommend. It could be somewhere scenic, a cool town, something outdoors, a weird roadside attraction, or anything else that would make for a fun little adventure.

Anyone do a similar road trip in a rental have any advice on how to deal with tolls?

I’m renting from enterprise and I know they have a toll pass program but their website says it’s region specific and if I’m renting from Chicago idk if they’ll be able to set up the northeast toll pass.

I know it might be possible to get my own EZ pass and set it up to my rental but idk how easy that is to set up.

I don’t have toll roads where I live so any advice would be appreciated! Thanks
