2026 NYC Marathon Transportation Megathread

Transportation selection opens August 25.

This year you pick your transportation type and will be assigned a time slot based on your wave.

It's worth noting, if you are in a later Wave - the Verrazano shuts down very early, meaning the last bus typically leaves somewhere around 6:30am and gets to the start between 7:30 and 8:00am. If you are Wave 4, for example, that means you're probably sitting around for ~3+ hours if you opt for the bus.

** Times based on last year, and this chart ended up being inaccurate on race day (pace bands were faster due to WMM Championships): **

Wave Wave Start Pace Start [2025] (Best Pace aka 10K equivalent) Pace End [2025]
1 9:10am 4:00 7:20
2 9:45am 7:21 7:56
3 10:20am 7:57 8:29
4 10:55am 8:30 9:20
5 11:30am 9:21 25:00

NYRR recently released a Transportation Non-Compliance Policy that truthfully, no one really knows how it will work, but it's worth mentioning here that if you choose to take a different transportation than you're assigned there may be consequences.

Creating a megathread to handle all questions/suggestions related to transportation.

NYRR 9+1 in 2026 - FAQs & Megathread

*Update*
As of June nearly all 2026 NYRR races have sold out, if at this point you are not already registered for nine 2026 races it is very unlikely you will be able to complete 9+1 program this year and likely should plan to try for next year instead.
The first 2027 races will likely be released later this fall in October for Jan-Mar 2027 races.

Every year r/RunNYC receives a lot of posts about the 9+1 program so in an effort to answer most of your questions we're continuing this FAQ and megathread again from last year where many questions were answered.

What is 9+1?

9+1 is an NYRR program to qualify for the following years New York City Marathon.

To qualify for the 2027 NYC Marathon, a runner must run and complete at least 9 eligible NYRR races in 2026, volunteer at 1 eligible 2026 NYRR event and also make sure their NYRR membership is active on 12/31/2026.

Which races are eligible?

On the race calendar any races that count toward qualifying will have a 9+1 tag next to it. You can also filter the race list from all "race types" to just select 9+1.

The full list of races for the year is not yet published officially, but the unofficial list (for Oct-Dec) based on prior years is listed below at the bottom of this post along with the race that have already been announced. The list of races remain very similar year over year so this is very likely to be close to the full list of races for 2026.

In 2026, expect there will be a total of about 30 in-person races eligible for 9+1, plus an additional 3 virtual races.

When can I sign up for these races?

Last year NYRR released races in 4 quarterly releases:

(Above are the General Registration dates, if you pay extra for Member+, it opens for Advanced Registration 2 Days earlier than above.)

For forthcoming remaining October-December races, NYRR will very likely release these races around the same date as last year, give or take a week or two.

+1 Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities at most races open for registration a few weeks after the quarterly race signup for the same races. The 3 marquee races, NYC Half, Brooklyn Half and NYCM have their own separate release of opportunities. There are also some other 9+1 eligible opportunities released throughout the year at different non race events that are released somewhat randomly.

Opportunities are all posted on the  volunteer opportunity page and to be eligible need to indicate "9+1 credit" tag for it to count as your +1.

If you're unable to find a volunteer opportunity during the main releases (they do fill up quickly) check the volunteer opportunity page the week leading up to a given race. NYRR sends out a reminder email the week of a race to all registered volunteers, which often causes people to cancel volunteer opportunities they're signed up for but can no longer attend, opening the opportunity spot back up for others to sign up.

Randomly stumbled across these. Looks like one “normal” colorway and one “unique”, similar to the London jackets this year.

5th Ave Mile standby notifications are out!

Check your inbox! I just received an email from NYRR saying that I got off their Members-only standby list for the 5th Ave mile. Sharing because I’ve seen people ask when they could expect notifications about the list for previous races.

Best of luck to my fellow 9+1 warriors who are still waiting for this email!

5th Ave Mile logistics

Possibly dumb question, but how do the heats work for 5th Avenue mile? I see both age groups and bib letters on the chart on the website, and age groups are further divided into A and B? Feeling confused and also like a dunce for being confused!

Prospect park around 6am?

Upvotes

I’m new to the area, and a relatively young woman. Is it safe for me to run in prospect park at around 6-7AM on weekdays? Are there other runners/bikers at that time? I plan to stay on the main loop.

A mix between Van Gogh’s barges and Hopper’s terraces - that’s my favorite pier ❤️

Thankful to live here and to see such beauty every day - no better place to run on earth!

Looking for a walking buddy

I’m a 29-year-old guy who works from home and lives in Midtown Manhattan near East 49th Street. I’m 5'10" and currently around 340 lbs, with a goal of getting down to 200 lbs.

I’m looking for someone nearby east 49 street in Midtown Manhattan and work out with him at his place.

Or just to walk with.

Details: 29 years old, in (Turtle bay)

Bruh this dew point

I’m training for the NYC marathon and these high humidity days are killing me…I have to slow down so much. I change my schedule to run when it’s not at it’s worse but it’s ruff.

Will running slower due to the humidity negatively impact my marathon day performance / pace?

Current construction status of the east river esplanade?

I want to run up the east side from Brooklyn bridge up to and across the queensboro bridge, but I remember when I tried a year ago a decent chunk of it had to detour onto the streets. Anyone know which parts are inaccessible due to construction/ have to run on the streets? Thank you!

Los Angeles Marathon buddies

Sup everyone! I wanted to run the NYC or Boston marathon but registration is impossible, so I’m planning on running the March 7 Los Angeles marathon since I have a way in. My friends aren’t too into running like I am and they definitely won’t fly to LA for a marathon. If anyone is down to train with me here and sign up for the marathon together hmu, maybe we could make a group chat out of it

Why is it so muggy today?

It’s 80 degrees at 65% humidity which doesn’t seem out of the ordinary for summer runs yet the whole time it felt like 95%. Is the weather app just off or is there something else in the air?

Cuomo Bridge Route

Hi friends! I’ve made it one of my goals to run all the bridges in and around NYC (that allow for pedestrians) and the cuomo bridge I think is my next hit. I’ve got 18 miles on deck this weekend. Any tips on a route to make this a success?

Generally for runs like this I’ll take a train somewhere (was thinking njt to nanuet station) run to the bridge, cross it, and try to get as close to my apt as possible (coming from the UES), then subways home. Has anyone done this route before? Open to all suggestions!! Thanks!

(Also pls share any other interesting runs from nyc I love to treat a long run like an adventure!!)

Edit: I’m cracking up sry guys for my ~tappan zeeeeee bridge~ run thx for the tips!!!!

Mile High Run Club.. permanently closed?

The post I've dreaded writing ever since locations started closing. Is their location in Nomad finally closed? The other day I was trying to book for next week and it showed spots available and then a couple hours later they were gone. Also from their website. A few days later their page is fully gone on Classpass. I google'd and it now says permanently closed. No announcement on their IG... anyone been recently or have the scoop? Been going since 2021 and there's nowhere else like them so so sad if this is true

Best running routes in NYC for an 10-mile run?

Hi! I’ll be visiting NYC in September and I’m looking to do an 10mile long run while I’m there. I’ll be staying near motto by Hilton and was thinking about running along the Hudson River.
What routes would you recommend for a long run? I’d love something scenic, relatively flat, and safe for running. 😊
Any tips or favorite routes would be greatly appreciated!

Going out after long run?

Be honest NYers training for the marathon… are you going out out after your long run?

Crushed my morning long run (15mi) It’s such a beautiful Saturday summer night and I’m feeling guilty “wasting” it. I’m not completely exhausted little sore so I could go out but is that normal or are people carbs and couch all day?

Edit: I mean out out guys hah. I went for a stroll and a liberty game but after that felt like I needed to be off my feet

Refurbished Garmin

Hi- does anyone have suggestions of where I can find a used garmin 265s? I'm training for the NYC marathon and my Apple Watch battery is shot. I could pay $100 for a new battery but I'd like to upgrade to the garmin as I've heard good things in my research. However, between new sneakers and all of the other expenses I'm just not looking to spend $350 on a new watch. If anyone has one they're looking to get rid of, message me! Thanks

How does the merge onto 4th Ave work in the NYC marathon?

Hi, I'm running New York for the first time this year. My understanding is that the blue and orange waves basically come straight off the upper deck of the Verrazano Bridge, and onto 4th Avenue, with orange on the left, and blue on the right. Then, pink stays separate for a bit longer, before merging onto 4th Avenue, also on the right side with the blue runners. I'm honestly confused how this works. If all of the waves are equal sizes, then the right side of the road would be twice as dense as the left. Wouldn't that mean that the pink wave runners get kind of squeezed out when trying to merge onto 4th Avenue, because they're essentially running into a massive wall of blue runners? Would it just be better/easier to try to run with orange to have more space?

Chicago Marathon training groups?

Hello. Sorry if this may have been asked before but are there any groups/ clubs doing weekend long runs for the Chicago marathon? I would love to join and share the experience of this training block with you guys. I usually do my long runs between 9:30-10:15 pace.
